KUALA LUMPUR, September 19 2026, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke has offered to resign as Transport Minister following the party’s decision in response to the conditional pardon granted to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
Loke said he would submit his resignation letter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim soon.
He said the decision was made after a three-hour meeting of the DAP Central Executive Committee (CEC), during which he proposed stepping down as a Cabinet member.
According to Loke, his resignation would be limited to his Cabinet position, while other DAP ministers and deputy ministers would remain in the government to maintain political stability.
“This is a responsible decision as we do not want any action taken by us to result in political instability,” he said at a press conference at DAP headquarters today.
Loke said the resignation of other DAP leaders could affect political stability and potentially undermine the government led by Anwar.
He also said DAP was aware of political manoeuvring by certain parties but would not take actions that could serve their political objectives.
Meanwhile, Loke stressed that projects and programmes under the Transport Ministry would continue as usual and that his resignation would not affect the ministry’s operations.
He reiterated that DAP respected the authority of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to grant pardons.
On Friday, Sultan Ibrahim, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, granted Najib a conditional pardon, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, subject to a RM50 million fine.
The Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) of the Prime Minister’s Department said the decision was made during the 64th Meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya, held at Istana Negara on Sept 18.
