SHANGHAI, September 22 2026, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim arrived in Shanghai today for a three-day working visit to Shanghai and Hangzhou, aimed at strengthening Malaysia-China relations, expanding trade and enhancing cooperation in emerging technologies.
Anwar and his delegation arrived at Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport at 5.10 pm local time and were received by Malaysian Ambassador to China Datuk Norman Muhamad and Consul General of Malaysia in Shanghai Abdullah Ma’amor Ibrahim.
Also present were Shanghai Vice-Mayor Wang Huajie, China’s Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing and Su Lin, a member of the Party Leadership Group of the Shanghai Municipal Foreign Affairs Office.
The visit, at the invitation of the Chinese government, marks Anwar’s fourth trip to China since becoming Prime Minister in 2022.
Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, is accompanied by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to attend WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 on Wednesday and deliver a keynote address at the WorldSkills Conference 2026.
He will then travel to Hangzhou to attend the Fifth Global Digital Trade Expo, where Malaysia and Hungary are participating as Guest Countries of Honour. Anwar is also scheduled to deliver a keynote address focusing on artificial intelligence and global cooperation.
During the visit, Anwar is expected to meet Chinese industry leaders and hold discussions with major industry and technology companies to promote foreign direct investment into Malaysia.
The highlight of the visit will be a high-level meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Hangzhou on Thursday.
China has remained Malaysia’s largest trading partner for 17 consecutive years, with bilateral trade reaching US$113.82 billion (RM456.68 billion) from January to August this year.
