KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 -- Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is no longer a second choice but a preferred option among the younger generation, driven by rising enrolment and high employability rates among graduates. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said as such the government remains committed to strengthening the TVET agenda as a key driver of human capital development and future economic growth. "I hope that the government's efforts through the organisation of National TVET Day will change public perception, showing that it is no longer a second choice but a top career path capable of producing a future generation of professionals, technology creators, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders," he said in a Facebook post today. He added that the nation’s economic future will be driven by a highly skilled workforce, new technologies, and a culture of innovation, which is why empowering TVET remains a priority. Ahmad Zahid said that to strengthen the national vocational education ecosystem, the government has declared June 2 as National TVET Day each year to raise public awareness of the field's importance in building a more progressive, competitive, and skills-based future. He said the National TVET Day 2026 celebration, scheduled to take place at Dataran Putrajaya from June 5 to 7, will bring together educational institutions, industry players, entrepreneurs, youth, and the general public. A variety of programmes are lined up, including technology and innovation exhibitions, a TVET Career Carnival, industry seminars, robotics and Drone Soccer challenges, a Future Skills Showcase, a TVET entrepreneurship platform, and interactive activities for families. Ahmad Zahid said the celebration will also reinforce strategic cooperation between TVET institutions and industry, ensuring talents meet current job-market demands rooted in technology, innovation, and skills. He said that 1,398 TVET institutions nationwide are now a core part of the nation's development. Ahmad Zahid, the National TVET Council chairman, said 229,121 students, or 56.86 per cent of Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) school leavers and equivalents, chose TVET studies, while total enrolment reached 459,558 last year. "What is even prouder is that the country's TVET graduate employability rate rose to 95.9 per cent in 2025 compared to 95.6 per cent the previous year," he said. He said this achievement proves that TVET is not only increasingly accepted by the younger generation but has also successfully produced the highly skilled workforce truly needed by the country's industries and economy. "Let us come together to make National TVET Day 2026 a success," he added. -- BERNAMA

KOTA KEMUNING , May 28 -- Kota Kemuning assemblyman Preakas Sampunathan has called on the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) to reconsider the university placement of a high-achieving student who was reportedly offered a place in a polytechnic instead of a public university. In a statement issued today, Preakas said he had been informed that the student had secured an offer in the Matriculation Programme at the earliest opportunity, but concerns were raised after she was later offered a course at a polytechnic rather than admission into a public university. He commended the Ministry of Education (MOE) for its continued commitment to supporting deserving students, particularly high achievers, adding that the move reflects the Prime Minister’s assurance that no qualified student should be denied access to further education. However, he stressed that the student’s outstanding academic achievements and proven capabilities make her well-prepared for direct university enrolment. “Denying a university placement to a student of this calibre would not only hinder her personal aspirations, but also represent a missed opportunity for the nation to nurture an outstanding future asset,” he said. Preakas urged MOHE to review the case fairly and compassionately, while appealing for the student’s application to be reconsidered to facilitate placement in a public university that matches her academic excellence. He added that education remains the “ultimate social equaliser” and emphasised the collective responsibility of policymakers and leaders to ensure hardworking and deserving youths are rewarded fairly through the national education system. Preakas also expressed hope for a positive and constructive resolution from MOHE regarding the matter. -- MINUTESMY / DARSINI SARAVANAN

KUALA LUMPUR, May 21 -- Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM) has become the first institution of higher education to organise a national-level e-Sports tournament fully managed by students through the kick-off event of ACS Edu Tour Season 5 yesterday. UPTM’s Secretariat and Corporate Communications Unit said that the programme adopts a “knowledge transfer” approach, with guidance from lecturers and industry players, thus providing students with direct experience in managing a national-level tournament campaign. The organisation of the event involved students from the Faculty of Business and Accounting, Faculty of Computing and Multimedia, as well as the Faculty of Education, Social Sciences and Humanities. ACS Edu Tour S5, which focuses on the amateur player segment, features the game Mobile Legends: Bang Bang with a total prize pool of RM200,000. “The seven-month programme is expected to involve 111 universities, colleges and polytechnics nationwide, with participation from 1,552 teams and more than 6,200 participants. Of that number, 32 teams are representatives from UPTM students,” the university said in a statement today. The tournament, jointly organised with CRIT e-Sport Malaysia, provides opportunities for higher education students across the country not only to compete but also to explore their potential in various branches of the e-Sports industry. The university said ACS Edu Tour also serves as a holistic development platform through collaboration between UPTM and CRIT, which also implements the Students Influencer Programme, Student Entrepreneurship Programme and Students Ambassadors Programme, giving students opportunities to build personal branding, explore entrepreneurship and engage directly with industry brands. “Students will also have the opportunity to try various roles in the e-Sports industry, including as entrepreneurs, e-Sports commentators (casters) and organisers, which will have an impact on expanding graduate employability in the digital and creative industries,” UPTM said. At the same time, inclusivity was also emphasised as participation is open to women and persons with disabilities (PwD), in line with efforts to expand access and participation in the national e-Sports industry. The programme is a continuation of the collaboration between the UPTM e-Sports Club and CRIT, which has been implemented since 2023 with support from strategic partners such as Tune Talk, Vico, Maggi Hot Cup and the “Kuasa Orang Muda” programme by Impact Integrated. -- BERNAMA
