CAMERON HIGHLANDS: The Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah today consented to the opening of the first Pahang State Islamic Primary School (SRAIN) in a temporary building in Golden Hill, Tanah Rata, here. His Majesty arrived at 10.20 am accompanied by the Director of the Pahang Islamic Religious Department (JAIP), Datuk Ahmad Khirrizal Ab Rahman. Also present was the Chairman of the Pahang Islamic Religious Affairs, Rural Development and Orang Asli Affairs Committee, Datuk Seri Syed Ibrahim Syed Ahmad. Al-Sultan Abdullah agreed to listen to a briefing regarding the establishment and planning of the school and presented a cheque for donations from the Pahang Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council, namely the purchase of a van worth RM170,402, a contribution of RM11,000 for the purchase of a smart board from Bank Rakyat and 14 units of tablets from the Tablet Genius Sdn Bhd zakat trust. Meanwhile, Ahmad Khirrizal, when met by the media, said his party was planning to add SRAINs in every district in the state. "We do have plans to establish this school in other districts. Maybe after this we will open this school in the Kuantan district, and then to other districts." "We are targeting every district to establish a Pahang Islamic Religious Primary School managed by the Pahang Islamic Religious Department," he said. Commenting on His Majesty's statement during the briefing session regarding the intention to include the Chinese language syllabus in the school, Ahmad Khirrizal said JAIP would work on the matter. "The department will try to realise His Majesty's directive, and we will then look for qualified teaching staff to be placed in this school, God willing," he said. Meanwhile, he said the school will have its own building in Royal Lily Park with an area of ​​four hectares which will be built together with a new mosque complex in the Cameron Highlands district. JOHOR BAHRU, June 9 -- The Election Commission (EC) has registered over 2.7 million electors eligible to cast their ballots in the 16th Johor state election, based on the Supplementary Electoral Roll for April 2026, which was gazetted on May 21. EC secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus said the figure comprises 2,703,175 ordinary voters and 24,751 early voters, including police personnel, General Operations Force (GOF) officers and their spouses, as well as members of the armed forces and their spouses. “Of the total number of electors, 56,655 are persons with disabilities (PWDs), who will require special attention from the EC to ensure they are able to vote comfortably,” he told Bernama. Khairul Shahril said the figures, however, remain subject to updates through the Supplementary Electoral Roll that will be adopted for the election following a decision at the EC’s special meeting slated for June 12. He said that approximately 42,000 election workers are expected to be appointed and mobilised to manage all aspects of the state election. The workforce will include 56 Returning Officers, election personnel and security officers involved throughout the election period. The EC is currently reviewing and updating information related to operational and logistical requirements for the polls. “Fundamentally, the cost of conducting an election depends on several factors, including the number of registered voters, polling centres and polling streams, the appointment of election personnel, logistical requirements, and the use of information and communications technology,” he said. Khairul Shahril added that the EC remains committed to optimising the use of public resources and expenditure to ensure elections are conducted efficiently, prudently and in line with operational needs. The Johor State Legislative Assembly was dissolved on June 1, with the EC scheduled to determine key dates for the state election at its special meeting on June 12. KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 -- The government's commitment to continue bearing the cost of fuel subsidies is seen as helping the people and curbing inflationary pressures, while serving as the country's main shield against the impact of the global supply crisis. Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (FOMCA) chief executive officer Dr Saravanan Thambirajah said the organisation welcomed the MADANI Government's initiative as it gives consumers confidence that the people's welfare remains a priority. He said maintaining fuel prices at current levels greatly helps reduce transportation and logistics cost pressures, while also supporting the supply chain to prevent increases in the prices of daily necessities. "However, FOMCA is of the view that fuel prices are not the only factor determining the prices of goods. "Consumers still face challenges from food costs, rental rates, energy costs, wages and various other operating expenses that also influence market prices. Nevertheless, maintaining the RON95 price can act as a buffer against inflation," he told Bernama. Meanwhile, senior lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Muamalat, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, Dr Mohd Shukor Harun, viewed the government's commitment as a responsible measure, particularly in easing the financial burden of the B40 and M40 groups. "However, from a public policy perspective, the existing blanket subsidy mechanism is regressive because it also benefits the wealthy. "If this subsidy is maintained when global crude oil prices surge, the country's fiscal deficit will widen and the expenditure will consume funds that should otherwise be channelled to development, education and healthcare sectors," he said. In this regard, he proposed a more sustainable long-term strategy to ensure continued assistance for the people in facing global economic pressures, including the progressive implementation of targeted subsidies. For food delivery rider Umair Al-Anshaari Rusli, 24, the government's move to maintain the subsidy is a great help as he relies entirely on his vehicle to earn a daily income. "This fuel subsidy is important because it can help control increases in the prices of goods and transportation costs, as we depend heavily on motorcycles or cars to earn a living," he said. KUALA LUMPUR: The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has submitted an official letter to the Sports Commissioner (PJS) yesterday, to provide a complete explanation regarding the confusion regarding the presentation of FAM's financial statements and budget, which was raised during the First FAM Extraordinary Congress 2026 last Thursday (June 4). FAM, in a statement, informed that the clarification was made following several statements and allegations that had created the perception that FAM had not presented audited financial statements and annual budgets to coalition members, in accordance with the stipulated provisions. "As the national football governing body, FAM respects the role of the PJS Office in ensuring compliance with the Sports Development Act 1997 and will continue to provide full cooperation to the relevant authorities, in any matter that requires further clarification," the statement said. Previously, FAM denied allegations that the parent body had failed to present a financial audit report since 2016, in addition to describing the allegations as misleading. FAM informed at the time that every audited financial report is always presented at the Annual Congress, including the Financial Report for the year ending 31 Dec 2025, which was presented at the First Extraordinary FAM Congress 2026, last Thursday. According to the FAM statement, each financial report goes through a thorough review process at the Finance and Management Committee and Executive Committee (EXCO) levels, before being presented for final approval at the Annual Congress. -- BERNAMA

JOHOR BAHRU, June 9 — Johor Menteri Besar, Onn Hafiz Ghazi, has reaffirmed the state government's commitment to easing the burden of rising living costs through the continued implementation of the Bantuan Bakul Kasih Johor (BKJ) programme, with an allocation exceeding RM30 million set to benefit more than 550,000 families across all 56 state constituencies (DUNs) in Johor. GENEVA, June 9 — Malaysia highlighted its latest social protection reforms during a courtesy visit to the International Social Security Association (ISSA) in Geneva, Switzerland, led by Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Datuk Seri R. Ramanan. Ramanan headed the Malaysian delegation in a meeting with ISSA President, Dato' Sri Dr. Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed, alongside ISSA's leadership and representatives, where discussions focused on strengthening social welfare, worker protection and social security systems. KUALA NERUS, June 9 --A total of 757,869 baby turtles were successfully hatched and released into the sea in Terengganu last year, underscoring the effectiveness of ongoing marine conservation efforts to protect endangered turtle species and preserve the country's marine biodiversity. Fisheries Director-General Datuk Adnan Hussain said the achievement was recorded under the Terengganu Turtle Management and Conservation Programme, which also documented 13,180 Green Sea Turtle nests and the successful collection and incubation of 1.07 million turtle eggs in 2025. He said the programme recorded an encouraging hatching success rate of 71.07 per cent, reflecting the effectiveness of conservation and incubation initiatives undertaken by the authorities. “Every hatchling that successfully returns to the sea represents renewed hope for the survival of this species and serves as an important indicator of the health of the marine ecosystem that we collectively inherit and strive to preserve,” he said. Adnan was speaking to reporters after the release of 570 baby turtles at the Pulau Redang Marine Park in conjunction with World Oceans Day 2026, themed “Protect the Sea, Sustain Fisheries”. He said Terengganu continues to be the country's primary nesting ground for green turtles, with key nesting sites located at Chagar Hutang Beach and Pasir Panjang Beach on Pulau Redang, Rantau Abang Beach in Dungun, as well as Geliga Beach and Ma’Daerah Beach in Kemaman. In addition to green turtles, the programme also recorded 308 leatherback turtle nests and 23 hawksbill turtle nests (Eretmochelys imbricata) throughout the past year. According to Adnan, conservation efforts have also contributed significantly to the state's ecotourism industry. In 2025, turtle conservation centres in Terengganu attracted 219,095 visitors, including 185,804 visitors to the Turtle Conservation and Information Centre (TCIC) in Rantau Abang. He added that 186 conservation education and awareness programmes were conducted during the year to enhance public understanding of the importance of protecting marine ecosystems and endangered wildlife. “Protecting turtles means protecting marine ecosystems, safeguarding fisheries resources and preserving the nation’s natural heritage for future generations,” he said. Meanwhile, Director-General of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN), Datuk Abdul Kadir Abu Hashim, said a total of 32 wildlife specimens, comprising mammals, birds and birds of prey, were released in conjunction with the World Oceans Day celebration. The release involved 22 jungle fowl, four woodcocks, two porcupines and four eagles from three species -- the red-backed sea-eagle (Brahminy kite), Changeable Hawk-Eagle and White-bellied Sea Eagle. Abdul Kadir said the wildlife release programme forms part of the country’s broader biodiversity conservation efforts while also helping to raise public awareness about the importance of protecting natural habitats. He explained that such releases are conducted periodically, particularly when there is a surplus of suitable wildlife that can contribute to species enrichment in selected habitats. Among the locations that have benefited from previous species release programmes is Langkawi Island, where the released wildlife has shown positive adaptation to its natural environment. “The survival of wildlife depends greatly on the availability of food sources, suitable habitats, water resources and breeding opportunities,” he said. He also urged the public to play an active role in protecting wildlife by reporting illegal hunting activities, snare traps or the use of poison to the nearest PERHILITAN office. “Conservation is a shared responsibility, and public cooperation is crucial in ensuring the sustainability of the country’s wildlife and natural ecosystems,” he added. -- BERNAMA

BUKIT MERTAJAM, June 9 -- Police have arrested a 29-year-old local man after a video showing a Mitsubishi Triton being driven recklessly and colliding with several vehicles on the North-South Expressway went viral on social media. Seberang Perai Tengah police chief ACP Nik Aminuddin Raja Abdullah said the suspect was apprehended by members of the public on the Butterworth-Kulim Expressway (BKE) near Seberang Jaya before being handed over to police officers. He said police received information regarding the incident at 10.05 am yesterday and preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was believed to have driven dangerously from the Sungai Dua area towards Penang, striking several vehicles along the route. “The suspect was successfully detained by members of the public in the BKE area opposite a petrol station in Seberang Jaya before being handed over to police personnel who arrived at the scene. “An inspection of a crossbody bag carried by the suspect uncovered a transparent plastic packet containing crystal-like substances suspected to be methamphetamine weighing 0.75 grammes, as well as another packet containing white crystalline substances believed to be ketamine weighing 2.38 grammes,” he said in a statement last night. Nik Aminuddin said urine screening tests conducted on the suspect returned positive results for methamphetamine and morphine. Further checks revealed that the suspect has an extensive criminal history, including 15 records related to drug offences and two records involving other criminal offences. He said the suspect has been detained for further investigation under Section 12(3) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and was scheduled to be brought before the Bukit Mertajam Magistrate’s Court today for a remand application. Meanwhile, investigations into the collisions are being conducted by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division (BSPT) of the Seberang Perai Tengah District Police Headquarters under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of drugs and causing an accident. Nik Aminuddin said police are also working to identify and locate all victims and independent witnesses who were present during the incident to assist with the investigation. Members of the public with relevant information have been urged to contact the investigating officer, Inspector Vignesh Kalaiselvan, at 011-14572390 or report to the nearest police station.
