MELAKA, June 12  -- The police dismantled a 'call centre' syndicate suspected of being involved in a non-existent online investment scam with the arrest of 12 individuals in two raids at Taman Krubong Perdana here early on Wednesday morning. Acting Melaka Tengah district police chief Supt Halim Abas said that those detained comprised 10 male Chinese nationals, in addition to a local man and woman, all aged between 23 and 47 years. "In the first raid at 2.30 am, a team from the Melaka Commercial Crime Investigation Department (JSJK) arrested six individuals, consisting of five male Chinese nationals and one local man, all aged between 23 and 43 years. "Meanwhile, the second raid at 3 am led to the arrest of five more male Chinese nationals and a local woman, all aged between 27 and 47 years," he said at a press conference at the Melaka contingent police headquarters (IPK) here today. Commenting further, Halim said that the results of the social media analysis experts' review found that both syndicates engaged in online investment fraud activities that do not exist and are suspected of targeting Chinese citizens through digital platforms. It was said that the investigation found that both syndicates had started operating since early June and were using the MiChat application to communicate with the victims. The investigation results also found that all the suspects acted as customer service representatives who contacted target customers and provided explanations about online investments that could be accessed through the given link. "Interested victims would choose the offered investment and make payments managed by other syndicate members who are still at large," he said. Halim said that in the raid, the police also seized 12 sets of monitors, mouses and keyboards, 12 CPU units, 12 mobile phones, as well as two sets of modems and routers worth approximately RM40,000, which were believed to be used for conducting the activities. He said the investigation was conducted under Section 420 of the Penal Code read together with Section 120B of the Penal Code and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, and all suspects have been remanded from June 10 to June 23. He also advised the public to be more cautious before making any money transfer transactions and to check with the bank or police if they feel suspicious about any financial dealings. "The public is also advised to check phone numbers and account numbers through the Semak Mule website before making any transactions, and to immediately contact the bank or the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997 if they fall victim to cyber fraud," he added. -- BERNAMA

PUTRAJAYA, June 12 -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the National Economic Action Council (MTEN) meeting today reviewed a presentation by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) on the El Niño phenomenon and its potential impact on the country. Anwar said the meeting agreed that METMalaysia should immediately intensify public awareness and outreach efforts by conducting comprehensive briefings across all states. He stressed that preparedness at the grassroots level must also be strengthened, as preventive measures and early planning remain the most effective defense against increasingly volatile and extreme weather conditions. KOTA KINABALU, June 12 -- The "Moments of Unity" concept forms the cornerstone of the National Unity Week (SMP) 2026 celebration at Likas Stadium here, creating opportunities for Malaysians from diverse backgrounds to connect through shared experiences that strengthen national cohesion. The four-day programme, organised by the National Unity Ministry and running from yesterday until Sunday, is among the flagship initiatives under the Unity Expedition programme themed "Together Building a Nation," with the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to officiate it on Saturday. Sabah National Unity and Integration Department director Rina Ab Harun said the celebration carries significant meaning in efforts to foster harmony and reinforce the Malaysian identity within the country's multicultural society. Speaking to Bernama, she said SMP is more than a symbolic event, serving as an effective platform to promote social integration at the grassroots level and enable people to better appreciate the values underpinning national unity. GEORGE TOWN, Jun 13 -- A total of 689 individuals have voluntarily come forward to receive treatment and rehabilitation related to drug abuse through the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) programme until May 31, reflecting the increasing public awareness of the rehabilitation opportunities provided by the government. AADK Enforcement and Security Division Director Mahadzir Elias said the approach provides an opportunity for addicts to voluntarily come forward to receive treatment without having to go through the legal process, as well as reducing the stigma society places on the group.      "The number involves individuals who are seeking treatment and rehabilitation at the Narcotics Addiction Rehabilitation Centre (PUSPEN) and those who come forward to seek treatment will not face legal action," he said at a press conference after the Penang AADK Special Prevention Operation here, last night. Since the amendment to the Drug Addicts (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983 came into effect on August 22, 2025, he said the AADK has opened up wider space for individuals involved in drug abuse to come forward to receive help voluntarily. He said for voluntary treatment and rehabilitation, AADK officers will assess the level of drug involvement and offer treatment packages ranging from three months to two years depending on their level of seriousness. Mahadzir said AADK had arrested 14,518 addicts and those involved in drug abuse nationwide as of May 31, which is 30.43 percent of the target of 47,000 individuals set for this year. Regarding the current trend in drug abuse, he said the pattern is now changing as users no longer gather in specific locations as before, but instead use the illicit substance at home, at work or in locations that are considered safer. Acknowledging that AADK is currently facing the challenge of dealing with the emergence of new drug substances, including those used through vaping, he stressed that most of the substances involved can still be detected through screening tests conducted by the agency. Meanwhile, Mahadzir said that in the AADK Special Prevention Operation in Penang which was carried out for three days until yesterday, a married couple who tested positive for morphine and methamphetamine while with their two three-year-old children and an eight-month-old baby were among 164 individuals arrested. "Of the 164 individuals arrested, 149 tested positive for drugs, while nine others were found to be violating the conditions of Community Rehabilitation Treatment (RPDK) with men recording the highest number of arrests, namely 155 people or 94.5 percent compared to nine women, all aged 19 to 65 years old. "Based on an analysis of the type of drug, methamphetamine is the most abused substance with 100 cases or 61 percent of all arrests, followed by opiates with 35 cases and marijuana (18 cases). He said his party used drone technology complete with a heat detection system or thermal technology  in the operation to monitor drug activity hotspots including in plantations, forests and villages, even at night. -- BERNAMA

In a statement today, the Muda Agricultural Development Authority (MADA) informed that the agency is committed to ensuring the continuity of the country's rice production through continuous monitoring of the status of water supply and the progress of planting activities in the MADA granary area, so that it can be implemented according to schedule. "As of June 10, pre-saturation activities are almost fully completed with an achievement of 99.5 percent, while land preparation work has reached 91.4 percent. "However, planting activity is still at 28.8 percent and MADA hopes that the remaining areas that have not yet been planted can be expedited by ," the statement said. According to MADA, the latest hydrological report shows that rice fields throughout the Muda Area have received good and sufficient rainfall to begin planting work. MADA informed that the latest data recorded the average daily rainfall for the entire Muda Region was 8.8 millimetres (mm), with Region II, Jitra recording the highest amount of 12.2 mm, followed by Region III, Pendang at 9.8 mm, Region IV, Kota Sarang Semut (6.9 mm) and Region I, Perlis (4.7 mm). Meanwhile, MADA is also releasing water from the dam in a controlled manner at a rate of 800 cubic feet per second (cusec/Q) to meet domestic and industrial needs. The statement informed that the status of water reservoirs in MADA's three main dams is also still at a stable level with a total of 506,168 acre feet or 41.39 percent. Pedu Dam recorded a reservoir of 378,470 acre feet or 43.25 percent, followed by Ahning Dam (112,948 acre feet or 50.65 percent), while Muda Dam (14,750 acre feet or 11.80 percent). MADA therefore calls on all farmers to take advantage of the current weather conditions to accelerate paddy planting activities using appropriate methods and to manage the use of water resources prudently and optimally to avoid waste. -- BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) will prosecute cases of extreme motorcycle modification in court under Section 42 of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987 following the increasing trend. Senior Director of RTD Enforcement, Datuk Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said that so far three investigation papers have been opened under the provision and have received permission to prosecute from the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further action. He said the move was a new approach by JPJ which previously focused more on enforcement actions such as summonses and confiscation. "We have detected motorcyclists riding dangerously and recklessly... the most distressing and most dangerous thing is that these motorcyclists continue to remove or discard the rear brake. So imagine the motorcycle moving without brakes." "Any motorcycle that has extreme modifications, we will confiscate and we will charge the motorcyclist involved," he said at the Ops Motosikal (Extreme) press conference at the Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory Road Transport Authority, here, on Wednesday. Muhammad Kifli said more than 300 extremely modified motorcycles have been seized since the beginning of this year, with Kuala Lumpur recording the highest number of seizures. He said that among the modifications that are often detected include the use of squid tires, unauthorized engine changes, the installation of long swing arms (structural components), modifications or deletion of the electronic control unit (ECU) system and the removal of the rear brake. "JPJ views seriously the trend of extreme motorcycle modifications that do not follow set specifications as they can affect the vehicle's original safety features and increase the risk of road accidents." "Most of the people involved are youths aged between 18 and 30, but there are also cases involving school students as young as 12 years old," he said. In an effort to strengthen operations, he said, the special Team Falcon team carries out enforcement every week to detect motorcycles that have been modified in an extreme manner as well as riders who commit offences under Section 42 of the APJ 1987. Based on the JPJ database, he said, a total of 848,885 JPJ(P)22 notices were issued to motorcyclists for various offences in 2024, followed by 711,722 notices in 2025 and 252,118 notices as of May this year. Muhammad Kifli said that from 2021 to this year, a total of 38,959 motorcycles were seized under Section 64(1) of the Motor Vehicles Act 1987 for violating the provisions of the law. Commenting on the action against motorcycle owners, he said that summonses will be issued not only to the rider but also to the registered owner, including parents, if the vehicle is registered in their name. Regarding possible action against workshops that illegally modify motorcycles, he said, JPJ is examining the legal aspects and will conduct further studies before making any announcement. He said JPJ will also collaborate with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, the Royal Malaysian Customs Department and local authorities to ensure that the components used comply with the regulations. -- BERNAMA

SEPANG: The operation of Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT3) which connects Shah Alam, Selangor with surrounding areas is expected to begin at the end of this month, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook. He said the start date of operations would be announced in two weeks and the project was currently in the final phase of trial operations. "After various tests have been carried out and trial operations have been finalised, we are confident that operations (LRT3) can commence," he told reporters after chairing the 62nd Annual General Meeting of the Road Safety Council here today. Meanwhile, Loke said the Bill (RUU) establishing the Malaysian Transport Safety Board (MTSB) will not be tabled in the Parliament session which begins next week. "MTSB has received Cabinet approval, but we are now discussing with the Public Service Department to look at staffing and so on." "This bill will be brought to the next sitting because at this sitting, there is one bill, namely the amendment to the Road Transport Act, which we are giving priority," he said. Loke said the Ministry of Transport (MOT) has also identified individuals to be appointed to the MTSB, which will be finalized in the near future. In another development, Loke said the MOT would hold discussions with e-hailing operators on the possibility of implementing additional safety measures to protect the safety of their drivers. Among the suggestions raised is the installation of dashboard cameras ( dashcams ) in e-hailing vehicles, but this needs to take into account passenger privacy concerns. "In terms of safety measures, we will discuss further with the operator to see what other actions they can take to protect drivers." "In terms of safety, drivers and passengers are equally important. LRT3 expected to start operating by the end of June – Loke

KUALA LUMPUR, JUNE 15 -- About 7,000 to 8,000 Rohingya were sent to third countries each year through intergovernmental cooperation, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail. However, he said the process has now stalled due to various constraints faced by the countries involved. He said the Rohingya ethnic issue was an international issue stemming from the political and security situation in Myanmar, causing Malaysia to accept their presence on humanitarian grounds. "Malaysia has government-to-government (G2G) cooperation with several countries that allows Rohingya refugees to be temporarily housed before being sent to third countries that need their labor or professional services. "Recently, the process of resettling Rohingyas to third countries has faced several constraints, causing their movement to the country to be halted, thus raising various issues that require the attention of all parties," he told reporters after the launch of the Fight Against Scam: Two Teams, One Goal, here, today. Mohd Khalid said that apart from that, Malaysia also took into account the humanitarian aspect in dealing with the issue, in addition to ensuring that national security continues to be maintained. "Everyone who comes to this country must follow the laws and regulations that have been set. These people are subject to our laws. If they commit an offence, we will take action just like we do against anyone else who comes to our country," he said. He said about 215,000 Rohingya are registered with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) while local authorities also have their records in collaboration with the Immigration Department to facilitate monitoring. "We know where they are and what their jobs are. So if any crime occurs involving them, it will be easy for us to take action when we know their location and so on," he said. Commenting on crime trends involving the community, Mohd Khalid said the involvement of the Rohingya ethnic group in crime was low, with 89 individuals recorded as being involved in criminal cases for the period 2024 to this year, which is 0.02 percent of the overall crime statistics in the country. In this regard, he reminded the public not to make statements that could affect public safety and order, while stressing that enforcement action would be taken against any individual who violates the law regardless of nationality. The media last Saturday reported that Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that the rate of resettlement to third countries by the UNHCR was too low for refugees, including the Rohingya, which was one of the reasons why the group remained in the midst of local communities for a long time. Meanwhile, Selangor Police Chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the state recorded 192 cases involving 300 arrests of Rohingya between 2025 and May 2026 involving violent and property crimes. He said the police always take consistent and continuous enforcement action and are not based on current sentiment. KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today described the groundbreaking ceremony for the Bukit Kiara Permanent Housing Project as a historic milestone that reflects the MADANI Government's commitment to justice, dignity and the welfare of the people. Speaking at the ceremony, Anwar said the project marks the end of a 44-year struggle for residents of Rumah Panjang Bukit Kiara, who have lived in temporary settlements under challenging conditions while awaiting a permanent housing solution. "This is a meaningful and joyous moment, not only for the residents of Rumah Panjang Bukit Kiara, but also proof that an administration guided by MADANI values will always place justice, courtesy and the dignity of the people at the forefront," he said. The Prime Minister noted that the project represents a concrete step towards resolving a long-standing issue that has affected generations of residents and demonstrates the government's determination to ensure citizens receive their rightful access to proper housing. He said the process of addressing the matter required careful consideration and collaboration among various stakeholders to identify the best possible solution while safeguarding the interests of the affected community. Anwar also expressed appreciation to all parties involved in making the project a reality, stressing that the experience underscored the importance of respecting legislative processes and upholding the role of national institutions. "The rights and welfare of those in need must continue to be protected, with justice enjoyed by all citizens regardless of race, religion or background," he said. He added that the government's efforts to uplift the urban poor would remain a priority, in line with its commitment to ensuring that no segment of society is left behind in the nation's development agenda. According to Anwar, development must be inclusive and benefit all levels of society, as true national progress can only be achieved when every citizen is able to participate in and benefit from economic and social advancement. During the ceremony, the Prime Minister also announced a RM1 million grant to assist longhouse residents transitioning into their new homes. The allocation will be used to provide residential maintenance subsidies for a period of three years and will be managed by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL). LONDON, 15 June  -- AI is rapidly reshaping the skills employers want most from workers – increasing the emphasis on human skills such as judgement, creativity and leadership – as companies most able to use AI continue to expand hiring faster than their peers, according to PwC's 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer, released today.  The Barometer, which analysed more than one billion job ads across six continents, also finds that AI is driving a 'two-track' global labour market in which 'professionalised' roles – in which AI automates routine tasks so human judgement and expertise are emphasized – are growing faster than roles 'democratised' by AI – in which AI makes the role itself easier for non-experts to perform. 'Professionalised' roles (such as radiologists or recruiters) are seeing twice the growth in available jobs and 42% faster salary growth than those categorised as 'democratised' (such as IT service managers or medical secretaries). At the entry level, AI appears to be increasing demand for more 'senior' skills from junior workers. Based on 2.4 million entry-level jobs analysed in the US, entry-level roles most exposed to AI are now seven times more likely to require traditionally senior-level 'human-intensive' skills like leadership, creativity or face-to-face interactions. Job openings for these 'seniorised' entry-level roles have grown 35% since 2019, while other entry-level roles shrank 10%. Joe Atkinson, Global Chief AI Officer, PwC, said: "Across the global economy, we're beginning to see a new divide emerge between different models for talent and value creation. The companies seeing the greatest returns on AI are using it to amplify human expertise, accelerate innovation and create entirely new sources of value. As a result, they are pulling further ahead on productivity and growth than companies that focus primarily on automation." AI is driving a productivity boom – and "super-star" companies most able to use AI are pulling ahead significantly The report finds widening divergence between companies most and least exposed to AI. Companies operating in the most AI-exposed sectors recorded 34% productivity growth in 2025 relative to 2018, compared to 24% for the companies least able to use AI. Within this group, a pronounced "super-star" effect is emerging. The top 20% of the most AI-exposed companies achieved average labour productivity growth of 163% relative to 2018 – nearly five times higher than the most AI-exposed companies overall. Perhaps most surprisingly, headcount growth at the most AI-exposed companies is outpacing growth at the least AI-exposed companies – 52% relative to 36% in 2025, based on 2018 baseline levels. Average wage premium for AI skills hits 62% as AI job postings eclipse broader labour market growth As companies continue to boost productivity with AI, the average wage premium for workers with AI skills continued to surge higher – hitting 62%, up from 57% last year. The wage premium varies by industry: as high as 118% in some sectors, such as consumer markets, and 16% in government and public sector work. Jobs requiring specific AI skills – such as prompt engineering or machine learning – have also soared, growing roughly eight times (69%) as fast as the overall jobs market, at 9%. The number of AI jobs is almost twice as high as 2024, with growth in AI jobs outpacing all jobs since 2015.  Sectors including technology, media and telecommunications (11%) and professional services (6%) sectors saw the highest share in AI job growth – with health at the lowest end (less than 1%) Pete Brown, Global Workforce Leader, PwC, said: "The traditional relationship between experience and expertise is changing.
