KUANTAN, May 28 -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has donated a sacrificial cow to media practitioners in Pahang for this year’s Aidiladha celebration, in recognition of the role journalists play in connecting the government and the people. The donation, made for the first time, was received by Pahang Press, which organised the qurban programme at Kampung Anak Air here with the assistance of about 40 members of the Tok Peramu Qurban Squad. Pahang Press chairman Fazli Ahmad said the initiative enabled the distribution of sacrificial meat to journalists and photographers from various print and electronic media organisations, as well as residents of Kampung Anak Air. “Pahang Press would like to express its deepest appreciation to the Prime Minister for donating a cow for the ritual sacrifice, with the meat distributed to media personnel. “For media practitioners in Pahang, this gesture carries special meaning as it reflects recognition of our role in delivering information and serving as a bridge between the government and the people,” he told reporters here today. He said the programme also served as a platform to foster cooperation among media practitioners through gotong-royong activities, including giving some participants their first experience in preparing sacrificial meat. “This is a different experience because we not only received sacrificial meat, but also strengthened ties through the spirit of cooperation. KUALA LUMPUR, MAY 28 -- Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today extended his congratulations to the Kedah Regional Development Authority (KEDA) on the occasion of its 45th anniversary, praising the agency’s longstanding contribution to rural development in Kedah. Established in 1981, KEDA has spent more than four decades driving transformation and improving the socio-economic landscape of rural communities in the “Rice Bowl State”. KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 -- The role of Dewan Himpunan Pendukung PAS (DHPP) within Parti Islam Se-Malaysia has come under renewed discussion following recent commentary by political analyst P. Ramasamy on opposition dynamics in Malaysia. In rebutting the statement made by Ramasamy, DHPP Information Chief Dr Balachandran Gopal Krishnan said portraying Dewan Himpunan Pendukung PAS (DHPP) as “feeble” or “meek” misunderstands both the role and strength of DHPP within PAS itself. “DHPP does not operate as an isolated political pressure group. Behind DHPP stands the full machinery, structure and leadership of PAS – one of the most organised and grassroots-driven political parties in Malaysia today.” he explained. Secondly, DHPP was never created as a race-based political platform. Unlike many parties that continue to approach politics through narrow ethnic bargaining, DHPP represents a broader and more inclusive political engagement involving Malaysians from various religious and cultural backgrounds who believe in integrity, stability, social harmony and responsible governance, he pointed out. “The old political model where every race must be represented only by leaders from the same race is increasingly losing relevance, especially among younger Malaysians. “Leadership should not be judged merely by ethnicity, but by sincerity, competency and willingness to serve all communities fairly.” said Dr Balachandran. In reality, many existing Indian political leaders today no longer possess the bargaining power they once claimed to have. “This is a political reality many ordinary Indians themselves openly acknowledge. Merely having an Indian face in leadership does not automatically translate into meaningful empowerment for the Indian community. “Within PAS, issues involving non-Muslims, Indians, Chinese, Siamese, Kadazan or any other community are not viewed as “their problems” alone. “PAS leaders themselves regularly raise issues affecting all Malaysians because governance must transcend race-based silos if the country genuinely wishes to move forward.” he added. “Malaysia today is entering a new political phase. The rakyat are increasingly tired of endless factionalism, personality politics, nepotism accusations and race-centred political narratives. What Malaysians need moving forward is a more mature, stable and inclusive political culture built on values, accountability and mutual respect. “Political maturity is not about who shouts the loudest about race representation. It is about building trust across communities and ensuring every Malaysian feels heard, respected and protected within the national framework.” That is the direction DHPP believes Malaysia must move towards, he asserts. --PRESSKL

KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the practice of reading can help shape a more mature and broad-minded society in facing an increasingly complex world. In a Facebook post, he said books are not only a source of knowledge but also educate society to be more patient in thinking and wiser in making judgements. “Books teach us to be more patient in thought, more mature in judgement and not easily swept away by a culture of condemnation or short-lived sensationalism. “Insya-Allah, tomorrow I will launch the 2026 Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair (PBAKL) as a sign of continued support for the culture of knowledge and reading among the people, particularly the younger generation,” he said. Anwar said he took the opportunity during the Aidiladha holiday yesterday to read several of his favourite books from various fields, including literature, while reflecting on the increasingly challenging times. In a video shared in the post, Anwar also recited poetry from “Dari Derita Bangsa”, related to his struggle and imprisonment in 1999, which also touched on the resilience of his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, in facing challenges during the Reformasi era. KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 — Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the Aidiladha sacrificial programme in Lembah Pantai this year was carried out smoothly and in a strong spirit of unity and cooperation among the local communit, yesterday. Fahmi said a total of 72 cattle were contributed for distribution to mosques, suraus, residents’ associations and Rukun Tetangga groups throughout the Lembah Pantai parliamentary constituency. He said the initiative was made possible through close cooperation and solidarity among members and supporters of PKR, UMNO and AMANAH, together with local communities who worked hand in hand to ensure the success of the programme. “At the same time, I also had the opportunity to visit Masjid Muhammadi in Angkasapuri and Surau As-Sakinah at the Kuala Lumpur Police Headquarters (IPK Kuala Lumpur),” he said. Fahmi added that Aidiladha is not only about performing the sacrificial ritual, but also reflects sincerity, sacrifice and togetherness in helping those in need. KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim held a telephone conversation with his Pakistani counterpart, Shehbaz Sharif, to discuss regional developments and ongoing efforts to strengthen the long-standing bilateral relationship between Malaysia and Pakistan, Yesterday. Anwar said he also conveyed his Hari Raya Aidiladha greetings to Shehbaz and the people of Pakistan, expressing hope that the spirit of sacrifice and brotherhood would continue to reinforce peace and the well-being of the ummah. JOHOR BAHRU: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim has agreed to donate 148 cows in conjunction with this year's Hari Raya Aidiladha sacrifice to be distributed to the people throughout Johor. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the gift reflected the love, concern and closeness of the Johor Royal Institution which always prioritizes the welfare of the Johor people. He also expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the blessings and concern of His Majesty, who is also the Sultan of Johor. KUCHING, May 27 -- The General Operations Force (GOF) Sarawak Brigade siezed over 342,000 litres worth about RM1.8 million under Op Tiris conducted at several locations in Sarawak since March 16 until yesterday. Its commander, SAC Lim Bak Phai said that various assets and equipment, including tanker lorries, heavy machinery and skid tanks worth almost RM17.5 million were also seized. “The brigade recorded 58 cases with 69 arrests during the operation, and one of its major success was the seizure of a tug boat in Bintulu that was used to store 20,000 litres of diesel without a valid permit,” he said in a statement today. The operation also recorded seizures of over 5 tons of subsidised cooking oil worth almost RM40,000 and over 7 tons of coarse sugar worth over RM31,000 with an overall seizure value of RM950,000. “The operation also managed to track down various modus operandi used by syndicates including storing, transfer and distribution of diesel without permits believed to involve a network of misappropriation of controled items in the state,” he said in a statement today. All suspects arrested and seizures have been handed over to the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry for further action and investigation under Section 21 of the Control of Supplies Act 1961. -- BERNAMA

KUANTAN, May 27 -- A police officer and his wife were killed, while their four children were injured after the vehicle they were travelling in collided with another car at KM76 of Jalan Kuantan-Segamat near Pekan early this morning. Pekan police chief Supt Mohd Zaidi Mat Zin said the victims were Inspector Syah Lokman Ludza Ramli, 50, who served at the Kuantan District Police Headquarters, and his wife Nurulfiza Ardiana Ambak, 46, both of whom were pronounced dead at the scene. He said the accident is believed to have occurred at about 3 am and involved a Proton Wira driven by the victim and a Honda City. “Initial investigations found that the Honda City, driven by a 26-year-old man, was travelling from Gelang Patah to Terengganu, while the Proton Wira driven by the victim was heading from Kuantan towards Jempol. “Upon arriving at the scene, the driver of Proton Wira is believed to have lost control of the vehicle before veering into the opposite lane and colliding with the Honda City,” he said in a statement today. He said the driver of the Honda City sustained minor injuries, while his 26-year-old wife, who is 22 weeks pregnant, is receiving treatment at the Emergency Zone of Muadzam Shah Hospital. “Four children of Syah Lokman and Nurulfiza Ardiana, aged between 10 and 18, were also injured and are receiving treatment at the same hospital, including one who suffered a fractured left leg,” he said. The bodies of both victims were sent to Pekan Hospital for post-mortem examinations, and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. -- BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 -- The Malaysian Prison Department will fully cooperate with relevant authorities in studying the findings of SUHAKAM's public inquiry into the Taiping Prison riot last year. In a statement today, the department said it views every finding, recommendation and issue in the report with the utmost seriousness, including allegations involving prison management and staff. "We will cooperate fully to examine the report thoroughly, in detail, and with integrity, to ensure every issue raised receives proper attention. "The department remains committed to safety, welfare, rehabilitation and human rights compliance, in line with legal provisions and established prison management standards," the statement read. The department also urged all parties to refrain from speculation or making premature conclusions that could affect this process and further action by authorities. Last Monday, SUHAKAM's public inquiry panel released its final findings on the Jan 17, 2025, Taiping Prison riot, which killed an elderly inmate. The panel suggested turning Taiping Prison into a museum, saying it is no longer fit for use as a prison. -- BERNAMA
