KUALA LUMPUR, March 26 — The decision to retain the Budi MADANI RON95 (BUDI95) fuel quota of up to 800 litres per month for e-hailing drivers and gig workers has been welcomed as a timely measure to help stabilise operating costs amid global uncertainties. Malaysian e-Hailing Coalition (GEM) Chief Activist Masrizal Mahidin said the move would not only ease financial pressures on drivers but could also boost demand for e-hailing services, particularly following the temporary adjustment to BUDI95 eligibility set to take effect next month. He noted that the revised quota for general eligibility — reduced from 300 litres to 200 litres per month starting April 1, 2026 — may encourage more urban commuters to opt for e-hailing services instead of using private vehicles, potentially increasing drivers’ income opportunities. Earlier, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the adjustment in response to the ongoing conflict in West Asia, while maintaining the subsidised fuel price under the BUDI95 initiative at RM1.99 per litre to cushion the impact on the public. Masrizal stressed that while maintaining the higher quota for e-hailing drivers offers immediate relief, long-term strategies are needed to address rising fuel costs driven by global oil price volatility. Among the proposals highlighted were incentives to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), along with improved infrastructure, social protection measures, insurance coverage, emergency funds and skills training to strengthen the resilience of gig workers. Meanwhile, Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (FOMCA) Chief Executive Officer Dr T. Saravanan said the decision reflects the government’s awareness of the challenges faced by those whose livelihoods depend heavily on fuel usage. He added that maintaining the 800-litre quota is crucial in ensuring market stability, while preventing misuse or excessive purchases that could disrupt fuel supply. Saravanan also called on consumers to remain patient and understand the necessity of the temporary quota adjustment, describing it as a prudent step towards safeguarding energy security, ensuring stable supply and promoting responsible fuel management.

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia has issued a strong condemnation of the recent attack on Iran, with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim warning that the escalating tensions in West Asia demand urgent, justice-based solutions to prevent further loss of life and instability. Anwar confirmed he had spoken with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to obtain the latest developments on the crisis, during which he conveyed Malaysia’s condolences over the significant loss of lives, including top political, military and security figures, as well as civilians — among them children. Reiterating Malaysia’s firm stance, the Prime Minister condemned the Israeli attack on Iran, which he said was supported by the United States, and expressed deep concern over the wider impact on Gulf nations affected by the conflict. “Malaysia condemns any action targeting civilians as unacceptable, as it clearly violates international law, humanitarian principles and the values of justice,” he said in a statement posted on social media. Anwar also acknowledged Iran’s readiness to engage in negotiations, provided there is a definitive end to the war, but cautioned against temporary solutions that fail to address root causes. Drawing from past conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon, he warned that ceasefires without firm guarantees risk perpetuating cycles of violence. He stressed that any meaningful path to peace must be anchored in justice, accountability and long-term commitment, ensuring the safety of all parties while restoring dignity to affected populations across the region. The Prime Minister also welcomed President Pezeshkian’s appreciation for Malaysia’s support and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to strengthening solidarity with Iran. Calling for global unity, Anwar urged the international community to remain steadfast in seeking a peaceful resolution to the West Asia conflict, expressing hope that diplomacy and humanity will prevail in the near future.

KUALA LUMPUR — The government is considering introducing more flexible work arrangements for civil servants, including the gradual implementation of working from home (WFH), as part of efforts to strengthen public service delivery and adapt to current needs. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the proposal aims to ensure continuity in public service operations while allowing greater flexibility in work practices. He added that the private sector will also be encouraged to adopt similar arrangements, following the example of several companies and banking institutions that have already implemented such practices. “Other measures are being considered, including more flexible work regulations. Civil servants will be allowed to work from home in stages and selectively. God willing, apart from the public sector, we will also encourage the private sector to adopt similar practices,” he said. The Prime Minister made the remarks while delivering a special address outlining the country’s strategic measures to enhance preparedness in facing the global energy crisis following the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Anwar emphasised that the government remains committed to fiscal discipline, including efforts to reduce wastage and prevent financial leakages, while maintaining economic stability despite global uncertainty. He noted that although the world is facing economic headwinds, Malaysia continues to attract strong foreign investment and remains a key investment destination amid global turmoil. In response to rising global uncertainties linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced a temporary reduction in the monthly subsidised RON95 petrol quota under the BUDI95 programme. Starting next month, eligible Malaysians will be allowed to purchase up to 200 litres of RON95 fuel per month at the subsidised rate of RM1.99 per litre, down from the previous 300-litre limit. The adjustment is part of the government’s broader effort to manage the financial strain caused by external economic pressures while maintaining support for citizens. Launched in late September, the BUDI95 programme aims to ensure that fuel subsidies are directed specifically to Malaysian citizens, minimising misuse by foreign users and commercial sectors. Under the scheme, individuals aged 16 and above with a valid driving licence qualify for the subsidised fuel. Meanwhile, the government will maintain a higher targeted RON95 petrol subsidy cap of 800 litres per month for e-hailing drivers and gig economy

KUALA LUMPUR, March 23 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Finance (MOF) will block the cards of individuals found to have abused the BUDI MADANI RON95 (BUDI95) assistance programme by filling subsidised RON95 petrol into empty barrels or containers, as has gone viral recently. MOF stressed that such action clearly violates regulations because it constitutes misuse of fuel subsidies under the BUDI95 initiative and could affect the government's efforts to ensure transparent, targeted and effective subsidy management. "Investigations found that the individual involved is a Malaysian and a MyKad holder. Following that, the MOF will take action by blocking the identity card used during that transaction, as well as the vehicle owner, from continuing to enjoy BUDI95,” it said in a statement today. The government, the MOF said, will not compromise on any form of subsidy leakages and misuse, especially amid current uncertainties that require close control over fuel supply and prices. Earlier, a video clip went viral depicting two individuals at a petrol station filling subsidised RON95 petrol into a container placed in the boot of a vehicle. According to the MOF, enforcement actions will continue to be intensified to curb such irresponsible activities, adding that the government appreciates the efforts of caring members of the public in channelling complaints regarding this matter. Members of the public are encouraged to continue providing information and lodging complaints if they detect any suspicious activities related to subsidy distribution by contacting the BUDI MADANI Service Centre at 1300-88-9595, via WhatsApp +603-26314595 or by email at budimadani@treasury.gov.my.
