TOKYO, June 9 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today called for a human-centred approach to artificial intelligence (AI), stressing that the greatest challenge facing society is not technological advancement itself, but ensuring that innovation remains guided by human values, wisdom and compassion. Delivering a special lecture titled “Humanity in a Human-Machine Civilisation” at the University of Tokyo, Anwar reflected on the implications of rapidly advancing AI technologies and the fundamental question of what becomes of humanity as machines increasingly imitate human thinking, communication and judgement. The Prime Minister said Malaysia has set an ambitious goal of becoming an AI Nation by 2030, but emphasised that the pursuit of technological progress must be accompanied by a broader discussion on the kind of digital civilisation the world seeks to build. “Asia must not enter the age of artificial intelligence merely as a market, a manufacturing base or a source of data. We must help shape a digital civilisation worthy of humankind,” he said. Anwar highlighted what he described as a profound irony of the modern era, noting that while humanity celebrates unprecedented technological breakthroughs, conflicts and humanitarian crises continue to afflict the world. He pointed to the ongoing genocide in Gaza, violence in Iran, attacks in Lebanon and the global energy crisis linked to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz as examples of challenges that persist despite technological advancement. He warned that some of these tragedies have been enabled or amplified by technologies often associated with progress, underscoring the need for ethical oversight and responsible innovation. The Prime Minister stressed that the true measure of progress should not be the sophistication of machines, but whether technological developments uphold human dignity and advance justice. Drawing inspiration from the philosophy of Watsuji Tetsurō and his concept of ningen, Anwar said human beings are fundamentally shaped by relationships, communities, history and shared experiences. While acknowledging AI’s growing capabilities, he argued that technology cannot replicate essential human experiences such as love, grief, loss and remorse. “The future of artificial intelligence is not merely a question of innovation, but one of values, power and sovereignty,” he said. Anwar concluded by urging governments, academics and industry leaders to ensure that technological progress remains firmly in service of humanity, guided by ethical principles and a commitment to the common good. -- MINUTESMY -- SOURCE: FB ANWAR IBRAHIM

KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has expressed his appreciation to KEMAS educators nationwide for their dedication and contributions in shaping Malaysia’s future generations, describing them as the backbone of early childhood education in the country. Speaking at the 2026 KEMAS Educators Day Celebration themed “55 Years Smartening the Nation’s Children”, Zahid highlighted the significant role played by KEMAS teachers in nurturing young minds and instilling strong moral values among children. He said that three years ago, KEMAS embarked on a mission to ensure that children under its care would not only learn literacy and numeracy skills but also receive a strong foundation in Quranic teachings, moral values and personal identity. “Today, we can witness the positive results of that effort. The KEMAS Pre-Tahfiz Programme has become an integral part of the early education culture within KEMAS centres throughout the country,” he said. He said KEMAS has served as the starting point of educational journeys for more than 8.4 million Malaysian children over the past 55 years, making it one of the nation’s most important grassroots educational institutions. “The true strength of KEMAS is not measured by numbers alone, but by the dedication of its educators who build confidence, shape character and instil noble values in young children who will one day become leaders, professionals and contributors to the nation,” he said. Zahid also extended his gratitude to all KEMAS educators for their sacrifices and unwavering service, urging them to continue inspiring children through education and positive guidance. JOHOR BAHRU, June 9 -- The Election Commission (EC) has registered over 2.7 million electors eligible to cast their ballots in the 16th Johor state election, based on the Supplementary Electoral Roll for April 2026, which was gazetted on May 21. EC secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus said the figure comprises 2,703,175 ordinary voters and 24,751 early voters, including police personnel, General Operations Force (GOF) officers and their spouses, as well as members of the armed forces and their spouses. “Of the total number of electors, 56,655 are persons with disabilities (PWDs), who will require special attention from the EC to ensure they are able to vote comfortably,” he told Bernama. Khairul Shahril said the figures, however, remain subject to updates through the Supplementary Electoral Roll that will be adopted for the election following a decision at the EC’s special meeting slated for June 12. He said that approximately 42,000 election workers are expected to be appointed and mobilised to manage all aspects of the state election. The workforce will include 56 Returning Officers, election personnel and security officers involved throughout the election period. The EC is currently reviewing and updating information related to operational and logistical requirements for the polls. “Fundamentally, the cost of conducting an election depends on several factors, including the number of registered voters, polling centres and polling streams, the appointment of election personnel, logistical requirements, and the use of information and communications technology,” he said. Khairul Shahril added that the EC remains committed to optimising the use of public resources and expenditure to ensure elections are conducted efficiently, prudently and in line with operational needs. The Johor State Legislative Assembly was dissolved on June 1, with the EC scheduled to determine key dates for the state election at its special meeting on June 12. The meeting will also decide the election timeline for Negeri Sembilan’s state polls. -- BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 -- The government's commitment to continue bearing the cost of fuel subsidies is seen as helping the people and curbing inflationary pressures, while serving as the country's main shield against the impact of the global supply crisis. Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (FOMCA) chief executive officer Dr Saravanan Thambirajah said the organisation welcomed the MADANI Government's initiative as it gives consumers confidence that the people's welfare remains a priority. He said maintaining fuel prices at current levels greatly helps reduce transportation and logistics cost pressures, while also supporting the supply chain to prevent increases in the prices of daily necessities. "However, FOMCA is of the view that fuel prices are not the only factor determining the prices of goods. "Consumers still face challenges from food costs, rental rates, energy costs, wages and various other operating expenses that also influence market prices. Nevertheless, maintaining the RON95 price can act as a buffer against inflation," he told Bernama. Meanwhile, senior lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Muamalat, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, Dr Mohd Shukor Harun, viewed the government's commitment as a responsible measure, particularly in easing the financial burden of the B40 and M40 groups. "However, from a public policy perspective, the existing blanket subsidy mechanism is regressive because it also benefits the wealthy. "If this subsidy is maintained when global crude oil prices surge, the country's fiscal deficit will widen and the expenditure will consume funds that should otherwise be channelled to development, education and healthcare sectors," he said. In this regard, he proposed a more sustainable long-term strategy to ensure continued assistance for the people in facing global economic pressures, including the progressive implementation of targeted subsidies. For food delivery rider Umair Al-Anshaari Rusli, 24, the government's move to maintain the subsidy is a great help as he relies entirely on his vehicle to earn a daily income. "This fuel subsidy is important because it can help control increases in the prices of goods and transportation costs, as we depend heavily on motorcycles or cars to earn a living," he said. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim previously said he did not agree with raising fuel prices while the country was facing a global supply crisis, and stressed that the government would continue efforts to bear fuel subsidy costs by allocating substantial monthly expenditure to prevent the people from being burdened -- BERNAMA
