KUALA LUMPUR: Ba'kelalan state assemblyman (ADUN) Baru Bian has filed an application to strike out the suit filed against him by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), which is seeking RM10 million in damages over alleged breach of bond conditions when he quit the party after winning the 14th General Election (GE14) in 2018. The notice of application was filed through Messrs. YH Teh & Quek on April 6 on the grounds that the High Court of Malaya in Peninsular Malaysia did not have jurisdiction to hear the case because the cause of action arose in Sarawak. The court set May 20 for case management before High Court Judge Roslan Mat Nor. In the application, Baru Bian, who is also the former Member of Parliament for Selangau, said he signed the bond in Kuching on April 25, 2018 and his involvement with PKR was only focused on Sarawak. "The plaintiff's (PKR) actions against me, even if proven true, do not arise in Peninsular Malaysia. The claim arises in Sarawak," he said in the application. Baru Bian is among 16 former MPs and assemblymen who were sued by PKR Secretary-General Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh on behalf of PKR for allegedly violating the terms of a RM10 million bond signed with the party. Also named as defendants are Datuk Kamarudin Jaffar, Datuk Mansor Othman, Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah and Datuk Seri R. Santhara Kumar. Apart from that, Abdul Yunus Jamhari, Datuk Azman Nasrudin, Dr Afif Bahardin, Chong Fat Full, Daroyah Alwi, Haniza Mohamed Talha, Muhammad Hilman Idham, Muhammad Jailani Khamis, Robert Ling Kui Ee and Zulkifli Ibrahim were also named as defendants. In separate suits filed on Feb 19 and 27, PKR claimed that under the operative clause of the bond, each defendant agreed to pay the party RM10 million within seven days of the occurrence of any event including the defendant resigning from the party, joining another political party or becoming an independent elected representative. The plaintiff claimed to have nominated each defendant as a candidate to contest in the 14th GE and successfully won several Parliamentary and State Assembly seats, subsequently forming the Federal Government and several state governments. "However, on 24 Feb 2020, each of the defendants ceased to be party members after being elected under the party banner. They also expressed support for political coalitions other than PKR," PKR said in the statement of claim. PKR announced on March 11, 2020 that the party decided to terminate the membership of each defendant immediately and a certificate dated March 16, 2020 was issued to confirm that the membership of each defendant had been terminated and demanded that each defendant pay a bond of RM10 million, but they failed to do so.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 — Pakatan Harapan will hold its 2026 convention on May 17 at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre, bringing together coalition leaders and delegates under the theme “Tekad MADANI, Harapan Rakyat”. In a joint statement issued by Fahmi Fadzil, Adly Zahari and Syahredzan Johan today said the coalition said the convention would serve as a platform to strengthen leadership cohesion and organisational unity, while coordinating political strategies and outlining Pakatan Harapan’s direction in addressing current national challenges. The event, scheduled from 8am to 6pm, comes as the coalition intensifies preparations ahead of upcoming state elections and the 16th General Election (GE16). As the backbone of the MADANI Government, Pakatan Harapan said it would continue focusing on strengthening the national economy, maintaining political stability and reinforcing public confidence. Prime Minister and Pakatan Harapan chairman Anwar Ibrahim is expected to deliver a special address to delegates during the convention. ISKANDAR PUTERI, May 7 -- Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has dismissed rumours that the Johor State Legislative Assembly would be dissolved today. He said that, for now, matters relating to the state election should be set aside, and all state assemblymen should continue serving the people across the state. “I would like to announce that the Johor State Legislative Assembly will not be dissolved today, so everyone can relax. I advise Honourable Members not to worry about the state election. “Continue serving the people and Bangsa Johor. Let us put aside election matters for now as there are still many programmes and initiatives that need to be implemented,” he said during the winding-up session of the Johor state assembly sitting at Bangunan Sultan Ismail here today. Onn Hafiz said he needed to clarify the matter following widespread speculation that the state election could take place soon, possibly due to the rising political temperature. “I noticed some differences during this assembly debate session, perhaps because the political temperature is rising. Some said this might be the last state assembly sitting before the state election, while others were apologising and shaking hands,” he said. Lately, talk of the dissolution of the Johor state assembly has intensified as several politicians in the state have begun making statements regarding the state election, while some parties have also started identifying their target seats.

SEREMBAN: The Unity Government will continue to focus on three main thrusts, namely maintaining political stability, driving economic prosperity and safeguarding the welfare of the people, said Pakatan Harapan (PH) Secretary-General Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He said this principle is also the basis of unification in the Unity Government and has been proven in its implementation over the past three years. "This government was formed based on mutual trust and respect. These two political values, trust and respect, are why I am impressed with Tok Min (Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun) who managed to maintain his victory in Negeri Sembilan and govern successfully," he said when speaking at the PH Main Leadership Inaugural Lecture here last night. Saifuddin Nasution said he also has confidence in the continuity of the current leadership, with the current term remaining for less than two years. KUALA LUMPUR, May 5 -- UMNO has no intention of becoming the opposition in Negeri Sembilan and will continue supporting and remain as part of the state’s Unity Government, party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said. He said the party’s national leadership has finalised the position of all 14 UMNO assemblymen in Negeri Sembilan to continue backing the existing state government. “We have no intention of becoming the opposition. UMNO at the national level has decided that all 14 assemblymen in Negeri Sembilan will remain part of the Unity Government,” he told reporters after the Kami Gen MARA Gathering here today. Ahmad Zahid said this in response to speculation over the party’s position in the state, adding that UMNO has not discussed any proposal to appoint a Menteri Besar from its ranks. On preparations for possible snap elections in Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor, he said all component parties have begun groundwork to ensure readiness, but it is still too early to identify potential candidates. Commenting on a proposal by economists to make Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) the core of a dedicated ministry for Bumiputera development, Ahmad Zahid said the idea has never been considered. “It has never been our intention, even if it is a proposal. MARA will remain, for now, as a key agency under the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development,” he said.
