Spectator provocation has been cited for a scuffle during the Malaysia International Muay Championship 2026 (MIMAC 3.0) final, but swift action by authorities restored order. Perak Tomoi Association president Mohd Ezry Azamin Abdul Wahab said the trouble started when a Moroccan fighter accidentally kicked the downed Malaysian athlete, breaking the rules and angering the crowd. "Okay, in the final, according to the rules and regulations, when a fighter goes down, the other can't strike. But I believe it was unintentional. "The situation was quickly brought under control, with police providing excellent security," he told reporters after the match at Dataran Warisan here last night. The incident took place during the bout featuring national fighter Muhammad Nazifi Mat Nasir (GPY Ciko), who beat Morocco's Ousama Taoud in the 68-70kg category to win the Perak Malaysian Association of Youth Clubs (MAYC) chairman Muhammad Naim Al Amin Saharudin belt. Mohd Ezry Azamin said the fighter was one of four Moroccan debutants in Malaysia, with their participation status to be reviewed post-match. "I haven't decided anything yet. We usually do a post-mortem the day after the event, then make our call," he said. On future events' security, Mohd Ezry assured that organisers will ramp up controls through tighter cooperation with police and internal security teams.

GEORGE TOWN, April 17 -- Penang will be targeting 60 gold medals at the 23rd Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Selangor, which will be held from Aug 15-24. State Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen described it as a realistic target, based on the thorough preparation the athletes have undergone since the conclusion of the previous edition of the Games, including exposing them to national and international-level competitions. He said the state's athletes are now in the final phase of preparation, focusing on improving their performance and ensuring their well-being and fitness are at optimal levels. "We are now 120 days away from SUKMA 2026, and this is the most critical phase of our preparation. "The most important thing is to ensure our athletes do not succumb to injuries as it would affect their medal chances at the Games,” he told reporters at the 120-Day Countdown to the 23rd Malaysia Games 2026 here today. Elaborating, he said that combat sports remained the state's main hopes for gold medals. Gooi also said that the actual number of athletes to be sent for the Games has yet to be finalised. "Over 800 athletes are currently training for the 37 sports, and about 500 will be shortlisted. The shortlist will be finalised soon, before we announce the official number of athletes who will represent Penang at SUKMA,” he said. He also said that the Penang State Sports Council (MSNPP) is actively coordinating the athletes’ accommodation requirements since there will be no centralised Games Village this time. He added that proper planning would be required as the events would be held across several districts in Selangor. "Although the organiser is providing a daily subsidy of RM100, part of the fixed costs will be borne by the state government to ensure the athletes’ welfare and needs are taken care of,” he said. SUKMA 2026 is set to feature 30 core sports, including athletics, aquatics, football, hockey and badminton, with seven other sports, such as chess, e-sports, cricket and kabaddi, added, bringing the total to 37. KUALA LUMPUR, 14 APRIL -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today officiated the Malaysia Sepak Takraw Academy Complex, describing it as a symbol of determination, hard work and commitment by the nation’s sepak takraw community to restore the sport’s glory. He said sepak takraw is not merely a game, but a national identity that reflects discipline, resilience and the beauty of a traditional sport that has long brought pride to Malaysia on the world stage. According to him, the journey has not been without challenges, but the spirit to rise again is now stronger than ever. “We have experienced both setbacks and successes, but today we rise with greater determination to restore the glory of sepak takraw,” he said. Anwar also called on the younger generation to fully utilise the academy’s facilities to hone their talents, build character and instil a strong sense of patriotism. “We aim to produce a generation of athletes who not only excel on the court, but also possess the strength of character to uphold the nation’s dignity,” he added. He stressed that the government is committed to ensuring the complex becomes a starting point for a new era of resurgence, positioning Malaysia once again as a formidable force in the international sepak takraw arena. As a sign of continued support, Anwar also announced an allocation of RM2 million to enhance training facilities, improve the academy’s comfort and strengthen the role of the Sepak Takraw Association. -- Minutes MY / Igneseous Noris -- Credit: FB Anwar Ibrahim

KUALA LUMPUR, April 13 -- The decision by Selangor FC chief executive officer Dr Johan Kamal Hamidon to voice his views outside official channels has raised questions and could potentially spark polemics within the local football ecosystem, according to a veteran football administrator. Former acting president of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mahadi, said the move was puzzling, given that Johan is not new to the country’s football administrative system. He said official platforms, such as meetings of the Malaysian Football League (MFL) board of directors and the MFL Congress, should be fully utilised if there is a genuine intention to improve the situation. “When one chooses to speak outside, it is no longer merely a professional view, but opens the door to various perceptions,” he said in a statement today. At the same time, Mohd Yusoff described the timing of the remarks as odd, raising speculation about the possibility of certain interests being at play. He did not rule out the possibility that the move carried an underlying intent, including an attempt to divert attention from internal weaknesses that have yet to be comprehensively addressed. He said criticising the league via external platforms could also be seen as an effort to exert indirect pressure on the MFL, while shaping a particular narrative. “There is a tendency to build momentum from the outside, dragging in other parties. This is no longer a routine critique. Its impact risks causing division and undermining the stability of the league,” he said. As such, Mohd Yusoff stressed that any effort to improve national football must be carried out professionally through proper channels, rather than through open statements that may raise more questions than solutions. Recently, Johan called for serious discussions to be held, including the possibility of organising a roundtable session involving all stakeholders of the M-League, particularly in light of the increasingly worrying financial situation among most teams. Johor Darul Ta'zim, Negeri Sembilan FC, Terengganu FC, Penang FC and Sabah FC are among the clubs that support the proposal to hold the roundtable session. Among the recurring issues affecting the M-League are delays in the payment of salaries to players and team officials by several clubs, as well as the challenge of rising operational costs, further exacerbated by the impact of ongoing tensions in West Asia.
