KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia's position has plummeted from 121st to 138th in the world in the latest rankings released by the International Football Federation (FIFA). Based on today's latest update, Harimau Malaya, who collected 1,086.22 total points, fell 17 places following a 1-3 defeat to Vietnam in the final Group F match of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, yesterday. The sudden decline was also influenced by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) decision to cancel Harimau Malaya's two matches in the previous qualifying campaign against Nepal and Vietnam. Based on the original results, Malaysia beat Nepal 2-0 at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on March 25 last year, in addition to thrashing Vietnam 4-0 at the National Stadium, Bukit Jalil, on June 10 last year. However, on March 17, the AFC Disciplinary and Ethics Committee decided that Malaysia would be declared a 0-3 loser for both matches after Harimau Malaya were found to have fielded ineligible players. The move was made following the document falsification issue involving seven Harimau Malaya players, namely Gabriel Palmero, Facundo Garces, Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca, Joao Figueiredo, Jon Irazabal and Hector Hevel.

KUALA LUMPUR: National Moto3 racer Muhammad Hakim Danish Ramli displayed an impressive performance when he collected three valuable points after finishing the race in 13th place at the United States Grand Prix (US GP), early this morning. The 18-year-old Malaysian rider had a difficult start to the third lap after crashing in the first qualifying session (Q1), which forced him to start the race in 25th place. However, the Kuala Terengganu-born AEON-Credit MT Helmets-MSi team rider displayed a high fighting spirit and consistent riding from the bottom position to overtake several top riders, thus placing himself in the final group of points. The race was won by Italian rider Guido Pini (Leopard Racing), followed by championship leader Maximo Quiles (CFMOTO Valresa Aspar Team) in second place while Alvaro Carpe (Red Bull KTM Ajo) completed the podium. The result obtained at the Austin Circuit saw Danish Judge now collect nine points and occupy 14th place out of 27 riders in the Moto3 World Championship chart. The country's young racer will continue competing in the Spanish GP at the Jerez Circuit on April 24.

GENEVA — Ticket sales for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will enter their fourth and final phase on April 1, running until the conclusion of the tournament, FIFA announced on Wednesday, according to Xinhua. In this final phase, tickets will be made available to fans on a “first come, first served” basis through FIFA’s official ticketing platform. Supporters will also have the option to select their seats upon purchase, while those who secured tickets in earlier phases will be able to view their assigned seating. The expanded 48-team tournament is scheduled to take place across Canada, Mexico and the United States in June and July. FIFA revealed that demand for tickets has been exceptionally strong, with more than 500 million requests submitted during the Random Selection Draw phase alone. This resulted in over one million tickets being sold by the end of that sales period on Feb 27. “With the tournament now less than 80 days away, the cumulative attendance record of 3.5 million set at the 1994 FIFA World Cup could be surpassed at this year’s competition,” FIFA said. — BERNAMA-XINHUA

KUALA LUMPUR — The national football team, Harimau Malaya, is set to pursue a victory in their final 2027 Asian Cup qualifier against Vietnam at Thien Truong Stadium in Ninh Binh on 31 March. Defender Daniel Ting said every match carries its own significance, especially in the effort to earn FIFA ranking points and improve the team’s standing on the global stage. “We want to win every match. Of course, it may not affect qualification or points directly, but there are still FIFA points to be gained, and we want to collect those points to improve our ranking,” he said in a video shared by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) with the media today. Daniel added that the team’s preparation is in a positive phase, with all players showing strong commitment after regrouping for the upcoming match. “Yes, I feel good, very good. As I said, we haven’t trained together for several months, so it has been a while since I last saw many of the players. I’m happy to see all my teammates. Even with the points situation, whenever you play for your country, you always want to win. Everyone is proud to represent their nation, so I can only describe the atmosphere as very positive,” he said. The Ratchaburi FC player also noted that his experience playing in the AFC Champions League 2 (ACL2) provides an extra advantage that could help elevate the team’s performance. The national squad is currently training in Bangkok, Thailand, until 27 March ahead of the clash with Vietnam, although a win in the match will not change the fact that Malaysia is already eliminated from 2027 Asian Cup qualification. --Minutes MY / Sugan Balan

LIVERPOOL — Mohamed Salah has confirmed he will leave Liverpool FC at the end of the season, bringing an end to his nine-year tenure with the club. The 33-year-old forward announced his decision via Instagram, alongside an official statement from Liverpool, with both parties agreeing to part ways earlier than his contract, which was due to expire next year. Salah, who has scored more than 250 goals for the club, described the decision as difficult due to his strong bond with the team and its supporters. However, his final season at Anfield has been challenging, with a dip in form leading to several omissions from the starting lineup. Reports also تشير to a strained relationship with manager Arne Slot, particularly following an incident in December when Salah was not fielded against Leeds United. In post-match comments at the time, Salah claimed he was being made a “scapegoat” for the team’s issues. Despite returning to action after the Africa Cup of Nations, he has struggled to regain top form and is currently sidelined with a muscle injury sustained during a UEFA Champions League match against Galatasaray. In its statement, Liverpool hailed Salah as “one of the greatest players in the club’s history,” noting his contribution to eight major trophies, including two Premier League titles and one UEFA Champions League title since joining from AS Roma in 2017. He currently ranks third on Liverpool’s all-time scoring list, behind Ian Rush and Roger Hunt. Salah said he chose to announce his departure early out of respect for fans and to provide clarity about his future, which remains uncertain. As a free agent, he is expected to attract strong interest, particularly from clubs in Saudi Arabia following a lucrative offer he declined in 2023. Liverpool will conclude their Premier League campaign against Brentford FC on May 24, and remain in contention in the UEFA Champions League, where they face Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Harimau Malaya squad's 14-place drop in rankings to 135th in the world has been described as a huge blow to head coach Peter Cklamovski. However, the Australian coach stressed that his squad remained positive despite the controversy that has engulfed the Malaysian football arena, and believed that efforts to break into the world's top 100 were still on the right track. He said everything within the team's control had been implemented well, including training aspects, playing style and tactical analysis, while describing external obstacles as temporary challenges that needed to be overcome. "Of course, in the last 12 months, we've been on the right track. The way we train, the way we play, the way we analyse opponents, the way we evaluate games, and how we can continue to develop football has been implemented well. "Things off the field have affected us, it's just a temporary setback, but for me, every great story has a negative aspect, and we need to take it as a lesson," he said when met ahead of the final Group F match of the 2027 Asian Cup Qualifiers against Vietnam here yesterday. Cklamovski said time would be the deciding factor in realising this wish after taking over Harimau Malaya in 2024. Yesterday, the International Football Federation (FIFA) released the latest rankings for Harimau Malaya, which fell 14 places to 135th in the world with 1,095.90 points. The significant drop was due to the heavy punishment imposed by FIFA following the issue of document forgery involving seven players with illegal heritage. Earlier, FIFA annulled the results of three friendly matches against Cape Verde, Singapore and Palestine by awarding a 0-3 free victory to the opposing team. The situation became worse when the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) also took similar action against two 2027 Asian Cup Qualifiers matches against Vietnam and Nepal, which also used the services of the players involved. The AFC's decision declaring Malaysia to have lost 0-3 in the match not only took away the country's ranking points, but also confirmed the failure of Harimau Malaya to qualify for the 2027 Asian Cup.

PUTRAJAYA — Malaysia’s preparations to host the 2027 Southeast Asian Games will remain on track despite economic challenges and tensions in West Asia, said Youth and Sports Minister Mohammed Taufiq Johari. He said cost-saving measures will be implemented, including using existing facilities across four clusters — Sarawak, Penang, Johor and Kuala Lumpur — instead of building new infrastructure. Sarawak will host the opening ceremony and the largest number of sports, while Kuala Lumpur will stage the closing ceremony. Penang and Johor will host selected events. Despite logistical challenges of a multi-cluster format, he expressed confidence that the organising committee will ensure a smooth and high-quality Games, scheduled from Sept 18 to 29.
