MELAKA, Nov 2 – Melaka development projects are under scrutiny after PKR Deputy Secretary-General Sivamalar Genapathy urged Chief Minister Ab Rauf Yusoh to provide an update on 55 projects that had yet to begin as of June 2025.
Sivamalar said almost 17 months had passed since Ab Rauf disclosed the figures. She called on the state government to explain the progress made before seeking a fresh mandate from voters.
According to Sivamalar, Ab Rauf reported on June 10, 2025, that Melaka had 241 development projects.
Of these, 86 were completed, 100 were in progress and 55 had not started. This meant almost one in four projects had yet to begin at that time.
Development Spending Reached 22.18 Per Cent
Sivamalar also raised concerns about the state’s development spending.
As of May 31, 2025, the government had spent RM19.52 million from its RM88 million development allocation. This represented 22.18 per cent of the total allocation.
She said the public needed updated figures to understand the projects’ progress.
She also questioned how many of the 55 projects had started, how many had been completed and how many remained delayed.
Public Needs Clear Project Updates
Sivamalar said the projects could involve public facilities, infrastructure and other developments needed by local communities.
She warned that delays could affect residents who were waiting for better services and facilities.
She acknowledged that development projects could face administrative challenges. However, she said these should not become long-term excuses without clear explanations or solutions.
Possible challenges include procurement procedures, technical approvals, land matters, contractor issues and funding delays.
She said the state government should coordinate the relevant agencies and resolve obstacles affecting project implementation.
PKR Requests Full List of 55 Projects
Sivamalar urged the Melaka government to publish a complete list of the 55 projects.
She said the list should provide:
- Project locations
- Approved allocations and project values
- Names of implementing agencies
- Original implementation schedules
- Current project status
- Expected completion dates
She also called for details of the approved funds, money disbursed and actual spending.
According to Sivamalar, these details would help residents assess the government’s performance using clear and verifiable information.
Ab Rauf Urged to Explain Project Delays
Sivamalar called on the state government to explain any outstanding delays and outline plans to resolve them.
She stressed that the issue was not simply about finding fault. Instead, it concerned accountability in managing public funds and ensuring development projects benefited the people.
She also said the government’s five-year mandate should not prevent it from answering questions about its performance.
Before Barisan Nasional (BN) seeks another term, Sivamalar said Ab Rauf’s administration should present its record of achievements openly.
She added that voters should be able to assess the government based on completed projects and measurable results, rather than announcements and promises.
