iQIYI's new AI Film Studio in Shanghai

iQIYI Opens AI Film Studio in Shanghai, Starts First Film Production

SHANGHAI, Nov 2 – Chinese entertainment platform iQIYI has opened a new AI Film Studio in Shanghai. Its first project, an internet feature film titled Cop in Trouble, is now in production.

Filming began on October 28 at the iQIYI Creative Center. The studio combines live-action filming with artificial intelligence (AI) tools.

These tools allow filmmakers to create and adjust visual elements after filming. At the same time, actors’ original performances remain at the centre of the production.

New Studio Combines Filming with AI

The new studio covers about 110 square metres. It supports multi-camera filming, high-resolution recording and real-time footage review.

It is also connected to NadouPro, iQIYI’s AI-powered film and television production platform.

Through NadouPro, filmmakers can access nearly 30 AI models, including Seedance 2.5 and Kling 4.0. The platform also offers hundreds of AI agents and production tools.

These tools help production teams create visual elements from recorded footage. For example, they can adjust sets, lighting, costumes, makeup and props after filming.

This approach gives directors more flexibility. It also allows them to develop scenes without changing the actors’ original performances.

Liang Zhu, iQIYI’s vice-president and head of intelligent production, said actors’ performances would remain central to the filmmaking process.

He added that the studio would give directors and creative teams more freedom to develop their projects.

‘Cop in Trouble’ Becomes First Studio Production

Cop in Trouble is the first project to use the new studio’s production facilities.

The film follows Jian Zhang, a low-ranking constable who tries to bring down a notorious outlaw. However, his plan begins to fall apart as his lies are exposed.

During filming, the production team records both dialogue scenes and carefully planned action sequences.

The team will then use the footage as a reference for AI-generated visual elements. These include character appearances, lighting, composition and background settings.

As a result, filmmakers can combine real actor performances with AI-created environments and visual details.

iQIYI Expands Its AI Filmmaking Plans

The Shanghai studio is part of iQIYI’s wider effort to bring AI technology into film and television production.

It follows the company’s virtual studio in Hengdian. According to iQIYI, that facility has improved production efficiency by more than 30 per cent.

The company said the new Shanghai studio could create more opportunities for emerging directors and smaller production teams.

It also aims to help filmmakers develop creative settings and visual effects for different film genres.

With Cop in Trouble now in production, iQIYI is expanding its AI filmmaking capabilities while keeping live-action performances at the heart of its projects.
