PUTRAJAYA, June 12 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the National Economic Action Council (MTEN) meeting yesterday reviewed a presentation by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) on the El Niño phenomenon and its potential impact on the country.
Anwar said the meeting agreed that METMalaysia should immediately intensify public awareness and outreach efforts by conducting comprehensive briefings across all states. He stressed that preparedness at the grassroots level must also be strengthened, as preventive measures and early planning remain the most effective defense against increasingly volatile and extreme weather conditions.
The Prime Minister noted that proactive engagement with state governments, local authorities, and communities is essential to ensure Malaysians are well-prepared to face the challenges posed by climate-related events.
During the meeting, MTEN also received a presentation from the Malaysia Petroleum Resources Corporation (MPRC) on the future direction of Malaysia’s Oil and Gas Services and Equipment (OGSE) sector.
Anwar said the government recognizes that the growth and development of businesses and industries are largely driven by the competence, agility, and innovation of industry players. He added that the government will continue to provide clear, conducive, and supportive policies to facilitate sustainable industry growth and strengthen Malaysia’s economic competitiveness.
Amid global economic uncertainty, geopolitical tensions, and various international crises, Anwar reaffirmed the MADANI Government’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of the people while ensuring the nation’s economy remains sustainable, resilient, and capable of withstanding future challenges.
“The MADANI Government will continue to act with wisdom and foresight to protect the well-being of the rakyat and ensure that Malaysia remains economically strong and resilient in the face of any challenges ahead,” he said.
