KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 2 – Two friends have pleaded not guilty to attempting to rob a jewellery supplier of valuables worth RM8.2 million.
The two men appeared before the Sessions Court on Monday.
They are salesman Tan Kah Seng, 35, and mechanic Tan Chien Ann, 30.
Both face charges over an alleged attempt to steal three bags of jewellery from Toung Zheng Fay, 30.
The incident reportedly happened outside a hotel in Brickfields at about 10 am on Oct 14. The suspects were allegedly carrying a machete.
Two Men Face Robbery Charges
The prosecution charged both men under Sections 393 and 397 of the Penal Code. The charges were read together with Section 34.
Section 393 covers attempted robbery. It carries a prison sentence of up to seven years and a possible fine.
Meanwhile, Section 397 covers robbery involving the use of a weapon. A person convicted under this section may face up to 14 years in prison, a fine or whipping.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Syafika Azwa Fikri did not offer bail. She cited the nature of the charges and the value of the jewellery.
Defence Requests Bail for Both Accused
However, lawyer Revin Kumar asked the court to consider bail.
He said Tan Kah Seng supports his wife, their eight-year-old child and his parents, who have health problems.
The lawyer also explained Tan Chien Ann’s family responsibilities. He said the mechanic earns RM2,000 a month and supports his nine-year-old son and parents.
After hearing both sides, Judge Noor Aini Yusof set bail at RM15,000 for each accused.
Each man must provide one surety. The court also fixed Nov 30 for the next mention of the case.
