Melaka Election: PH Challenges MCA Candidates to Four Open Debates

MELAKA, Nov 2 – Pakatan Harapan (PH) has proposed holding open debates with Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates from the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) in four Melaka constituencies.

The proposal follows a challenge by MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong. He had invited the PH candidate for Banda Hilir to take part in a debate.

PH Melaka deputy chairman Khoo Poay Tiong said the coalition wanted to expand the challenge to all four seats contested by MCA and PH.

PH Names Four Candidates for Debate

Khoo said PH was ready to debate MCA candidates in the following constituencies:

  • Kota Laksamana: Low Chee Leong
  • Banda Hilir: Leng Chau Yen
  • Klebang: Farzana Hayani Mohd Nasir
  • Machap Jaya: Ginie Lim

He said both sides could hold the debates at a neutral venue agreed upon by the parties.

Khoo also proposed appointing an independent non-governmental organisation (NGO) to mediate the discussions. This would help ensure a fair and balanced debate.

Debates Proposed in Bahasa Melayu

Khoo suggested conducting the debates in Bahasa Melayu.

He said this would allow residents from different backgrounds to understand the candidates’ views and policies.

PH hopes to hold the debates before Nov 14, the polling day for the Melaka state election.

Meanwhile, DAP National Political Education Director Howard Lee Chuan How proposed another round of debates involving the national leadership of both coalitions.

He said the discussions could focus on national policies that affect Melaka.

PH Says Debates Can Help Voters Assess Policies

Lee said open debates would give both sides an opportunity to explain their policies and positions.

He added that public discussions could encourage transparent exchanges of ideas. They would also support democratic participation.

The Melaka state election is scheduled for Nov 14. Early voting will take place on Nov 10.
