Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Anwar Urges Stronger Governance in Bumiputera and Islamic Institutions

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 2026,  Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on government-linked institutions serving the Bumiputera and Muslim communities to uphold strong governance, transparency and accountability.

He said these institutions must manage their responsibilities properly and maintain public trust. Their role in protecting community interests should not excuse weaknesses in management.

Anwar made the remarks during the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday.

He was responding to a supplementary question from Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman about how the government ensures that investment funds managed by government-linked investment companies (GLICs) are used responsibly.

Stronger Oversight for Government-Linked Institutions

Anwar said many GLICs and government-linked companies (GLCs) are fully owned by the government. Some are also entrusted with protecting the interests of the Bumiputera community.

Tabung Haji, for example, serves the interests of Muslims.

He stressed that these responsibilities make strong governance even more important. Institutions must protect their reputation by ensuring proper management and accountability.

Investments Should Support National Priorities

Anwar also addressed the role of GLICs and GLCs in supporting national development and public welfare.

He said their investments should align with key national priorities. These include housing, education, heritage preservation and local economic development.

He cited Petronas’ involvement in Putrajaya Holdings and the development of accommodation for Malaysian students studying overseas as examples of government-linked participation in public projects.

The Prime Minister also highlighted Kota MADANI in Putrajaya. The project aims to provide housing for civil servants and address accommodation challenges in the area.

MADANI Programmes Support Villages and Schools

Anwar said government-linked investment companies and private firms have also contributed to community development programmes.

He noted that 500 villages and 1,700 schools had benefited from the Kampung Angkat MADANI and Sekolah Angkat MADANI programmes.

He reiterated that institutions entrusted with public resources must maintain high governance standards. At the same time, they should contribute to the country’s long-term development and improve people’s well-being.
