JOHOR BAHRU, July 11 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) received 29 complaints related to online content violations, including fake news, hate speech and fraudulent activities, throughout the campaign period for the 16th Johor State Election (PRN Johor).
Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said the complaints involved various forms of online content reported during the election campaign period.
She said 17 complaints were related to the spread of false information, while 11 complaints involved hate speech and one complaint concerned a fake account and impersonation activities.
Teo said the government remains committed to ensuring a safe and responsible digital environment, particularly during election periods where the spread of misinformation and harmful content can affect public confidence and social harmony.
She reminded the public to verify information from reliable sources before sharing any content online and urged social media users to avoid spreading unverified claims that could create confusion or tensions among communities.
The MCMC, she added, will continue monitoring online platforms and take appropriate action against content that violates existing laws and regulations.
The Johor state election campaign officially concluded ahead of polling day, with authorities continuing efforts to maintain a peaceful and orderly electoral process both offline and online.
