Adly Zahari discusses Pakatan Harapan's strategy for the Melaka state election.

Melaka Polls: Adly Says Multi-Cornered Contests Could Create More Opportunities for PH

MELAKA, Oct 30 – Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman for Melaka, Adly Zahari, says contests involving three or more candidates could create strategic opportunities for the coalition in the upcoming Melaka state election.

He said a straight fight between two candidates does not always give a party an advantage. In some situations, a contest involving three or four candidates could offer a different path to victory.

Adly shared this view based on his experience in previous multi-cornered elections. He acknowledged that such contests bring both challenges and opportunities for political parties.

He was speaking to reporters after a tea reception with media practitioners in Ayer Keroh on Friday. Melaka PKR chairman Adam Adli Abd Halim was also present.

PH Expands Its Election Contest to 24 Seats

Adly said PH had decided to increase the number of seats it will contest from 21 to 24 after reviewing the political situation and its chances of winning.

The coalition initially agreed to contest 21 seats on Oct 24. However, it later reassessed the situation and identified additional opportunities.

He stressed that the decision should not be seen as a failure in negotiations with other political parties. Instead, he said PH had made its own assessment based on its capabilities and the latest political developments.

PH Wants Voters to Have a Choice

Adly also said PH wanted to ensure that every state constituency had a contest, giving voters the opportunity to choose their representatives.

He cited a seat where Bersatu had decided not to field a candidate without consulting PH. The coalition then stepped in to ensure voters would still have a choice at the ballot box.

Nomination day for the Melaka state election is scheduled for Oct 31. Early voting will take place on Nov 10, followed by polling day on Nov 14.
