SHAH ALAM, April 13 -- Police have crippled international drug trafficking syndicates in raids around Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Sepang, resulting in the seizure of 82 kilogrammes of drugs estimated to be worth RM5.45 million. Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the first case involved the arrest of a 19-year-old salesgirl in the car park of a shopping mall near KLIA on April 5. He said the local woman was arrested after being found in possession of a suitcase containing 12 plastic packages believed to be syabu, weighing about 12.5 kilogrammes and worth an estimated RM625,000. “The suspect tested negative for drugs and had no previous criminal record,” he said at a press conference here today. In the second case, Shazeli said a raid on April 6 at KLIA Terminal 1 uncovered three pieces of luggage believed to belong to three local men, containing 90 plastic packages of cannabis buds weighing 45 kilogrammes and worth RM3.6 million. He said following that three men, aged between 26 and 37, were detained on April 8 by the KLIA Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division. “Two of the suspects tested positive for Amphetamine and Methamphetamine and we also seized £190 (RM1,000) in cash during the raid. “Further investigation found that two of them had four and six previous records respectively, and we believe the drugs were intended for distribution in the international market,” he said. Shazeli said police believe the suspects were acting as drug mules, having been offered lucrative rewards of at least RM5,000, in addition to having their travel tickets and accommodation expenses sponsored by the syndicates. The suspects have been remanded for seven days and the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act. Meanwhile, Shazeli said police were seeking public assistance to locate a 33-year-old woman, believed to be the owner of the luggage, which was found abandoned at KLIA Terminal 1 and contained 23 plastic packages of syabu, weighing an estimated 24.5 kilogrammes and worth RM1.225 million. He said the woman, identified as Syazwani Farhana Dron, was found to have fled after realising the luggage had been flagged and did not board the flight she was scheduled to take, adding that the seized drugs were believed to be intended for the Sabah market. --BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR, 13 April 2026 – Most workers in Malaysia say they are happy at work – but that happiness comes with important caveats employers should take note of. According to Jobstreet by SEEK’s latest Workplace Happiness Index, 70% of Malaysian workers feel somewhat or extremely happy, yet far fewer are comfortable with the pressures that come with their jobs. While a similar majority said they feel valued, and 68% find their job fulfilling, deeper stress and burnout continue to shape the employee experience. The Workplace Happiness Index is based on responses from around 1,000 individuals aged 18 to 64, currently in the employment market and living in Malaysia. The research provides a comprehensive view of how workers feel about their jobs today, offering valuable insights for employers, HR leaders, and policymakers seeking to build happier, more productive workplaces. These findings come against the backdrop of a relatively strong labour market, with steady job opportunities and low unemployment. Yet beneath the surface, three in 10 workers feel either unhappy or neutral about their work, signaling clear room for improvement. Where happiness shows up most For many Malaysians, workplace happiness comes from the fundamentals of daily work. Workers report being happiest with where they work (69%), who they work with (65%), and what they do day to day (65%). Predictable routines, trusted colleagues, and meaningful responsibilities contribute to a sense of control and ownership – factors that consistently underpin positive workplace experiences. One in three Malaysians feel burnt out Despite generally positive sentiment, stress and burnout have emerged as significant concerns. Only 36% of workers are satisfied with their stress levels, and 41% say they feel burnt out or exhausted by their job. Burnout is closely linked to workplace unhappiness, with workers who are unhappy are twice as likely to report feeling burnt out compared to those who are happy. Among workers who are unhappy at work, 71% say improving work-life balance would increase their happiness, second only to higher pay. This highlights a pressing reality: unmanaged stress and burnout can negatively affect wellbeing, absenteeism and long-term productivity. Purpose matters than pay alone “Our findings show that 70% of workers in Malaysia feel happy at work, which is encouraging, but there’s still a significant group who feel disengaged, burnt out, or unsupported. While salary remains important, what truly sustains happiness is purpose,” said Nicholas Lam, Managing Director at Jobstreet by SEEK Malaysia. When Jobstreet by SEEK compared workers’ overall happiness with different aspects of work, a clear pattern emerged across all markets surveyed: a sense of purpose has one of the strongest links to workplace happiness. In Malaysia, 64% of workers say they are satisfied with the purpose they find in their work. This suggests that while competitive salary is important for attracting and retaining talent, workplace happiness is most likely to thrive when employees feel their work is meaningful and connected to something bigger than day-to-day tasks. “Workplace happiness in Malaysia is a shared responsibility. When employers invest in purpose-driven roles, supportive cultures, and listen to the diverse needs of their workforce, the impact is tangible – translating to higher engagement, productivity, and retention,” added Lam. “Ultimately, building happier workplaces isn’t just good for workers, it’s essential for long-term business success.” Different generation, different pressures Workplace happiness is not experienced equally across generations. Gen Z employees report lower happiness and higher stress, as they navigate early career pressures, skill-building, and the need to prove themselves. They are also more likely to say reducing stress would significantly boost their happiness (40%) compared to 35% of Millennials and 27% of Gen X workers. Industry also shapes workplace experience. Professional Services (78%) and Construction (78%) report the highest happiness, while Public Sector (62%), Industrial (61%), and Retail, Hospitality and Sports (55%) rank lowest – reflecting challenges around workload, recognition, and flexibility.

KULAI, April 13 -- The increase in operating costs, especially diesel fuel, due to the current global energy crisis is expected to cause increased delays in road construction and maintenance projects nationwide. Deputy Minister of Works Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan said his ministry expected the number of projects behind schedule to increase compared to before. He said that of the 855 projects in implementation under the Public Works Department (JKR) involving 28 ministries previously, one-third were ahead of schedule, one-third were on schedule and one-third were late. Ahmad explained that road construction and maintenance projects were the most affected sector due to their high dependence on the use of diesel to power heavy machinery such as lorries and road rollers. "Because all the vehicles that make roads use diesel... so this industry is indeed following market prices and that is their main complaint. "What is affected is road maintenance and the construction of new roads, while for building construction, they can still use up existing building materials. However, with the current situation, we are worried that this category of late projects will increase," he said. He said this to reporters during an official working visit to the Kulai District Public Works Department at the Kulai District Engineer's Office, here, today. Ahmad said the industry estimated the cost increase to be between 30 and 40 percent, but the government did not want to rely on that figure without more accurate data confirmation. Therefore, he said, the Works Ministry is currently obtaining official data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) to determine the actual rate of increase in the price of building materials. "DOSM has a scientific and systematic calculation method covering various sectors including building materials, food and transportation. We will use their data as an official reference," he said. In addition, he said his party had also held meetings with several contractor associations including the Malaysian Bumiputera Contractors Association (PKBM), the Malaysian Malay Contractors Association (PKMM), the Malaysian Class F Bumiputera Contractors Association (Perkobf) and the mechanical contractors association to obtain industry feedback.
