PUTRAJAYA: A total of 10,000 traders under the supervision of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) have received a 50 percent reduction in site rental rates for two years, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh. He said DBKL and Labuan Corporation were among the earliest local authorities (LAUs) to announce initiatives aimed at easing the burden of the cost of living for traders, especially following the increase in oil prices. "We have a long list for (recipients under) DBKL, which is 10,000 at all sites, including food courts and markets," he said after officiating the Putrajaya Aktif Programme here today. The reduction in rental rates for hawker sites and certain premises under the supervision of DBKL is effective from April 1 to December 31, 2027. Hannah said Putrajaya Corporation is currently still examining the best approach before implementing similar measures, including evaluating additional forms of assistance other than rental discounts. He, however, said that for now the government is prioritizing reducing rental rates over other forms of subsidies, taking into account financial constraints and the need to generate alternative revenue. "When we reduce rent, we need to find other sources of revenue because we are also facing increased operating costs including rising oil prices," he said. Hannah, when commenting on today's program, said the government had also launched free sports classes involving sepak takraw and rope jumping in Putrajaya as a specific measure to address obesity among children. He said the program was chosen because it was low cost and easy for children to practice at home. "This class is held twice a month, on the second and fourth week, involving 50 participants per session at four locations around Putrajaya and is held throughout the year," he said. Hannah said the initiative was implemented together with the Ministry of Health, with a focus on providing programmes and fostering an interest in sports, while the nutrition and health aspects were monitored by the ministry. He said the government also plans to obtain data on obese children in Putrajaya through collaboration with the Ministry of Education to expand the program's reach to target groups before expanding it to other areas including Kuala Lumpur.

ALOR SETAR: The Border Protection Agency (AKPS) refused entry to 28 foreign nationals at the Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security Complex (ICQS) between April 1 and 11. Bukit Kayu Hitam AKPS commander SAC Fauzi Mohd Yusof said that of the total, 14 individuals were Indian citizens, consisting of 13 men and one woman. He said all the individuals aged 20 to 40 were refused entry into the country after failing to meet the requirements as tourists, including not having a return ticket and being unable to provide a clear purpose of travel to Immigration officers. "In addition, there are also those among them who are listed on the department's suspect list and are not allowed to enter Malaysia," he said in a statement today. He said five Thai citizens were also refused entry after being found to be using damaged passports and did not meet the country's entry requirements. In addition, Fauzi said two Bangladeshi men were refused entry because they were not allowed to use the land entrance in accordance with the department's current instructions. He said the rest involved citizens of Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Indonesia who were refused entry due to various non-compliance with entry requirements and all of them were directed to return to their last country of departure. Fauzi further said that his party would continue to tighten controls at the country's entry points to ensure that only visitors who meet the requirements are allowed to enter. "Strict action will continue to be taken against any individual who attempts to abuse the country's Immigration facilities," he said.

The recent circulation of alleged leaked scenes from Jananayagan has triggered a wave of concern across fans, creators, and industry insiders. While curiosity around unreleased footage often spreads quickly online, Malik Streams is taking a firm and clear stance: leaked scenes are piracy—and piracy undermines the very foundation of creative work. “No support. No sharing. No compromise.” That message is now being echoed widely across social platforms, as audiences are reminded that every frame of a film represents countless hours of dedication, craftsmanship, and passion. From actors and directors to editors and technicians, entire teams invest months—sometimes years—into bringing a story to life. The unauthorized leak of scenes doesn’t just spoil the viewing experience; it directly affects the livelihoods of those involved. Industry experts point out that leaks can damage box office performance, disrupt marketing strategies, and diminish the emotional impact carefully planned by filmmakers. Fans of Jananayagan have begun rallying around the idea of ethical viewing, encouraging others to avoid engaging with pirated content. The movement emphasizes a simple but powerful choice: support, not steal. Malik Streams reinforces that real appreciation for cinema goes beyond hype—it’s about respecting the effort behind the art. As the conversation grows, one thing is becoming clear: audiences are not just consumers anymore; they are active participants in shaping a culture that either protects or harms creative industries. The message stands strong—behind every frame is hard work and passion.

PETALING JAYA -- Malaysia’s Premier Songkran Festival 2026 offers a platform to strengthen long-standing people-to-people and cultural ties between Malaysia and Thailand as both countries mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027. Thailand’s Ambassador to Malaysia Lada Phumas said the 11-day festival, held from April 9 to 19, also serves as a vibrant showcase of Thailand’s tourism and creative economy, reflecting its broader push to position itself as a key strategic player on the global stage. “While we are bringing the spirit of Songkran and authentic Thai offerings to Malaysia, I would also like to invite our Malaysian and international friends to experience Songkran traditions in Thailand. “Let us use this festival to strengthen the people-to-people and cultural ties that have bound us for decades, as we join hands on our journey towards the 70th anniversary of Thailand-Malaysia diplomatic relations next year,” she said at the official launch of the festival on Friday. Also present were Digital Minister and Damansara Member of Parliament Gobind Singh Deo, ambassadors and high commissioners accredited to Malaysia, as well as members of the ASEAN Ladies’ Circle. Songkran, Thailand’s traditional New Year festival, is celebrated annually from April 13 to 15, marking the start of the Thai New Year. “Songkran in Thailand” was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2023. Lada said this year’s festival emphasises experiencing Songkran in a more meaningful and sustainable way. “We aim to balance our legendary ‘sanuk’, the Thai word for fun, with sustainability and responsibility. From water-splashing festivities to traditions such as pouring water on elders and traditional Songkran dances, a vibrant showcase of Thai music and performances awaits visitors. “As Songkran symbolises renewal and family unity, we hope the celebration, especially amid current global challenges, will embrace mindful practices, from the responsible use of water to energy conservation, ensuring that our traditions are preserved for future generations,” she said. She said the Royal Thai Embassy has been actively enhancing bilateral cooperation through cultural programmes, economic forums and strategic dialogues, while advancing initiatives to support trade, tourism and people-to-people connectivity. Malaysia’s Premier Songkran Festival 2026 at 1 Utama Shopping Centre is one of the key cultural events that has drawn tens of thousands of visitors annually since its inception, now entering its fourth consecutive year. This year, organisers are projecting a turnout of more than 80,000 visitors, reinforcing its position as a major regional attraction. The festival also offers a Thai street market featuring 50 curated booths, including more than 40 authentic Thai food vendors, alongside desserts, beverages, fashion and lifestyle products, as well as carnival attractions. KUALA LUMPUR, April 10 -- The government has created a buffer by maintaining targeted subsidies for RON95 and diesel at fixed prices, while aligning the prices of non-subsidised fuel with market rates to shield the public from the direct impact of the global energy crisis. Finance Minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan said the measure is crucial to protect critical sectors, including fishermen, public transport and eligible logistics vehicles, which continue to enjoy diesel at controlled rates. “Critical sectors that still benefit from subsidised diesel, such as fishermen, continue to receive diesel at RM1.65. “For land public transport vehicles, including school and express buses, ambulances and fire engines, the price is RM1.88 per litre, while eligible logistics vehicles and users in Sabah and Sarawak pay RM2.15 per litre,” he said at a global energy crisis briefing today. He said current global price pressures stem from low supply relative to high demand, security threats, as well as rising shipping and insurance costs. Amir Hamzah said Malaysia’s fuel supply is more robust compared with other countries, with Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and several other oil companies managing the nation’s resources responsibly. “We can see this through petrol stations that continue to operate. Malaysians can still purchase fuel. Some countries have already imposed rationing, and hundreds of petrol stations elsewhere have been closed due to supply shortages,” he said. He said the crisis should be viewed as an opportunity for Malaysia to continue strengthening its economic resilience and to seize the chance to become a more dynamic and progressive society. “The people play an important role. This is the time for us to set aside our differences and choose unity in facing the crisis, including practising moderation in our daily lives. “The government’s priority at this time is to ensure sufficient supply of fuel, energy, essential goods and medicines for the rakyat. At the same time, the government is striving to safeguard the national economy and protect the people,” he said.
