KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 -- Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is no longer a second choice but a preferred option among the younger generation, driven by rising enrolment and high employability rates among graduates. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said as such the government remains committed to strengthening the TVET agenda as a key driver of human capital development and future economic growth. "I hope that the government's efforts through the organisation of National TVET Day will change public perception, showing that it is no longer a second choice but a top career path capable of producing a future generation of professionals, technology creators, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders," he said in a Facebook post today. He added that the nation’s economic future will be driven by a highly skilled workforce, new technologies, and a culture of innovation, which is why empowering TVET remains a priority. Ahmad Zahid said that to strengthen the national vocational education ecosystem, the government has declared June 2 as National TVET Day each year to raise public awareness of the field's importance in building a more progressive, competitive, and skills-based future. He said the National TVET Day 2026 celebration, scheduled to take place at Dataran Putrajaya from June 5 to 7, will bring together educational institutions, industry players, entrepreneurs, youth, and the general public. A variety of programmes are lined up, including technology and innovation exhibitions, a TVET Career Carnival, industry seminars, robotics and Drone Soccer challenges, a Future Skills Showcase, a TVET entrepreneurship platform, and interactive activities for families. Ahmad Zahid said the celebration will also reinforce strategic cooperation between TVET institutions and industry, ensuring talents meet current job-market demands rooted in technology, innovation, and skills. He said that 1,398 TVET institutions nationwide are now a core part of the nation's development. Ahmad Zahid, the National TVET Council chairman, said 229,121 students, or 56.86 per cent of Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) school leavers and equivalents, chose TVET studies, while total enrolment reached 459,558 last year. "What is even prouder is that the country's TVET graduate employability rate rose to 95.9 per cent in 2025 compared to 95.6 per cent the previous year," he said. He said this achievement proves that TVET is not only increasingly accepted by the younger generation but has also successfully produced the highly skilled workforce truly needed by the country's industries and economy. "Let us come together to make National TVET Day 2026 a success," he added. -- BERNAMA

KOTA KEMUNING , May 28 -- Kota Kemuning assemblyman Preakas Sampunathan has called on the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) to reconsider the university placement of a high-achieving student who was reportedly offered a place in a polytechnic instead of a public university. In a statement issued today, Preakas said he had been informed that the student had secured an offer in the Matriculation Programme at the earliest opportunity, but concerns were raised after she was later offered a course at a polytechnic rather than admission into a public university. He commended the Ministry of Education (MOE) for its continued commitment to supporting deserving students, particularly high achievers, adding that the move reflects the Prime Minister’s assurance that no qualified student should be denied access to further education. However, he stressed that the student’s outstanding academic achievements and proven capabilities make her well-prepared for direct university enrolment. “Denying a university placement to a student of this calibre would not only hinder her personal aspirations, but also represent a missed opportunity for the nation to nurture an outstanding future asset,” he said. Preakas urged MOHE to review the case fairly and compassionately, while appealing for the student’s application to be reconsidered to facilitate placement in a public university that matches her academic excellence. He added that education remains the “ultimate social equaliser” and emphasised the collective responsibility of policymakers and leaders to ensure hardworking and deserving youths are rewarded fairly through the national education system. Preakas also expressed hope for a positive and constructive resolution from MOHE regarding the matter. -- MINUTESMY / DARSINI SARAVANAN

KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 -- Users of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) service on the Ampang/Sri Petaling line want maintenance and repair works on the track system to be improved after a train derailed near the Chan Sow Lin Station this morning. Sixty-seven-year-old retiree Augustin Francis thought that the news about the incident was fake after being informed by a friend, and chose to use the LRT service to head to the capital city. "I have been using the LRT service for over 30 years, and it's convenient, but it seems to become outdated. The track, especially, looks like it needs to be replaced because there have been two or three track-related problems before,” he told Bernama when met at the Chan Sow Lin Station here today. Francis, whose trip to the capital city was delayed by the derailment, hopes maintenance work can be conducted more frequently. Meanwhile, 36-year-old Norhamirah Hamdi, who wanted to take her children on an outing in view of the school holidays, said she was unaware of the incident until she was informed by auxiliary police personnel. A Bernama observation also found that repair work was being carried out by Rapid KL at the incident location, about a three-minute drive from the Chan Sow Lin Station towards Cheras. It was also found that many users still use the train service, which now operates as a shuttle service between Pudu, Chan Sow Lin and Cheras stations. In addition, auxiliary police personnel and Rapid KL staff are also assisting and guiding users at the stations, and it is understood that repair works are still ongoing. Earlier, Bernama reported that a train on the Ampang/Sri Petaling Line derailed this morning while passing through a track-switch area near the Chan Sow Lin station, thereby disrupting service schedules along the affected route. Rapid KL said in a statement that the incident, caused by a faulty track switch, left the train unable to move. At the time of the incident, all 25 passengers on board the train were safely evacuated in accordance with operating procedures, and no injuries were reported. -- BERNAMA

KUANTAN, May 28 -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has donated a sacrificial cow to media practitioners in Pahang for this year’s Aidiladha celebration, in recognition of the role journalists play in connecting the government and the people. The donation, made for the first time, was received by Pahang Press, which organised the qurban programme at Kampung Anak Air here with the assistance of about 40 members of the Tok Peramu Qurban Squad. Pahang Press chairman Fazli Ahmad said the initiative enabled the distribution of sacrificial meat to journalists and photographers from various print and electronic media organisations, as well as residents of Kampung Anak Air. “Pahang Press would like to express its deepest appreciation to the Prime Minister for donating a cow for the ritual sacrifice, with the meat distributed to media personnel. “For media practitioners in Pahang, this gesture carries special meaning as it reflects recognition of our role in delivering information and serving as a bridge between the government and the people,” he told reporters here today. He said the programme also served as a platform to foster cooperation among media practitioners through gotong-royong activities, including giving some participants their first experience in preparing sacrificial meat. “This is a different experience because we not only received sacrificial meat, but also strengthened ties through the spirit of cooperation. Most importantly, it reflects the Prime Minister’s appreciation for the role of media personnel in Pahang,” he said. -- BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR, MAY 28 -- Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today extended his congratulations to the Kedah Regional Development Authority (KEDA) on the occasion of its 45th anniversary, praising the agency’s longstanding contribution to rural development in Kedah. In a statement, Zahid described KEDA’s 45-year journey as one filled with sacrifices and achievements in uplifting rural development and enhancing the well-being of the people. “Alhamdulillah, KEDA continues to play its role as a catalyst agent in accelerating holistic rural transformation, encompassing both worldly and spiritual aspects for the prosperity of rural communities,” he said. Zahid added that KEDA’s true strength lies in the sincerity and dedication of its workforce, who remain close to the grassroots and understand the needs and aspirations of the people. He also called on the agency to continue being caring, responsive and committed in championing the rural development agenda. “If not us who continue standing together with the rural community, then who else?” he said. KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 -- The role of Dewan Himpunan Pendukung PAS (DHPP) within Parti Islam Se-Malaysia has come under renewed discussion following recent commentary by political analyst P. Ramasamy on opposition dynamics in Malaysia. In rebutting the statement made by Ramasamy, DHPP Information Chief Dr Balachandran Gopal Krishnan said portraying Dewan Himpunan Pendukung PAS (DHPP) as “feeble” or “meek” misunderstands both the role and strength of DHPP within PAS itself. “DHPP does not operate as an isolated political pressure group. Behind DHPP stands the full machinery, structure and leadership of PAS – one of the most organised and grassroots-driven political parties in Malaysia today.” he explained. Secondly, DHPP was never created as a race-based political platform. Unlike many parties that continue to approach politics through narrow ethnic bargaining, DHPP represents a broader and more inclusive political engagement involving Malaysians from various religious and cultural backgrounds who believe in integrity, stability, social harmony and responsible governance, he pointed out. “The old political model where every race must be represented only by leaders from the same race is increasingly losing relevance, especially among younger Malaysians. “Leadership should not be judged merely by ethnicity, but by sincerity, competency and willingness to serve all communities fairly.” said Dr Balachandran. In reality, many existing Indian political leaders today no longer possess the bargaining power they once claimed to have. “This is a political reality many ordinary Indians themselves openly acknowledge. Merely having an Indian face in leadership does not automatically translate into meaningful empowerment for the Indian community. “Within PAS, issues involving non-Muslims, Indians, Chinese, Siamese, Kadazan or any other community are not viewed as “their problems” alone. “PAS leaders themselves regularly raise issues affecting all Malaysians because governance must transcend race-based silos if the country genuinely wishes to move forward.” he added. “Malaysia today is entering a new political phase. The rakyat are increasingly tired of endless factionalism, personality politics, nepotism accusations and race-centred political narratives. What Malaysians need moving forward is a more mature, stable and inclusive political culture built on values, accountability and mutual respect. “Political maturity is not about who shouts the loudest about race representation. It is about building trust across communities and ensuring every Malaysian feels heard, respected and protected within the national framework.” That is the direction DHPP believes Malaysia must move towards, he asserts. --PRESSKL

KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the practice of reading can help shape a more mature and broad-minded society in facing an increasingly complex world. In a Facebook post, he said books are not only a source of knowledge but also educate society to be more patient in thinking and wiser in making judgements. “Books teach us to be more patient in thought, more mature in judgement and not easily swept away by a culture of condemnation or short-lived sensationalism. “Insya-Allah, tomorrow I will launch the 2026 Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair (PBAKL) as a sign of continued support for the culture of knowledge and reading among the people, particularly the younger generation,” he said. Anwar said he took the opportunity during the Aidiladha holiday yesterday to read several of his favourite books from various fields, including literature, while reflecting on the increasingly challenging times. In a video shared in the post, Anwar also recited poetry from “Dari Derita Bangsa”, related to his struggle and imprisonment in 1999, which also touched on the resilience of his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, in facing challenges during the Reformasi era. The 43rd PBAKL 2026 will be held from May 29 to June 7 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur. -- BERNAMA
