JOHOR BAHRU, June 26 -- A total of 593 nomination forms for the Johor state election have been sold so far, but only 133 prospective candidates have confirmed their participation by paying the required deposit. Election Commission (EC) chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said the number was expected to increase, as prospective candidates still have until the start of the nomination process tomorrow morning to complete the formalities. "As of this morning, we have sold 593 nomination forms at returning officer offices throughout the state. Of that number, 133 candidates have made the deposit payment, meaning they have confirmed their participation so far. "We still have time until tomorrow, and we hope candidates intending to contest will come earlier to make their payments so that the nomination process can proceed more smoothly," he told reporters after inspecting preparations at the nomination centre for the Maharani constituency at the Muar District Office here today. Ramlan gave an assurance that all 56 nomination centres across the state were fully prepared after the EC conducted two consecutive days of trial runs. On security arrangements, Ramlan reminded all political parties, candidates and supporters to comply with regulations and avoid any provocation to ensure nomination proceeds in a peaceful and orderly manner. Maharani returning officer Zainal Eran said supporters of political parties attending tomorrow's nomination process would be placed in designated areas separated by barriers to prevent any untoward incidents. "Only the candidate, proposer and one supporter will be allowed to enter the nomination centre in accordance with the established procedures. "Other supporters will be placed at the field in front of the centre, where barriers will be erected to separate supporters of each party to prevent any undesirable incidents," he said. Pakatan Harapan has announced it would field candidates in all 56 seats, comprising 20 from PKR, 19 from Amanah and 17 from DAP. Barisan Nasional will also contest all 56 seats, fielding 36 UMNO candidates, 16 MCA candidates and four MIC candidates. Perikatan Nasional has announced that PAS will contest 11 seats, Bersatu 16, the Malaysian Indian People's Party five and Pejuang one. Meanwhile, the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance will contest four seats, Parti Sosialis Malaysia one seat, while Parti Bersama Malaysia is set to make its electoral debut by contesting 15 state seats. The Johor State Legislative Assembly was dissolved on June 1. The EC has set tomorrow as nomination day, July 7 for early voting and July 11 for polling day. JOHOR BAHRU, June 25 -- All 15 Parti Bersama Malaysia (Bersama) candidates in the upcoming Johor state election will declare their assets, income, and expenditures via Statutory Declarations (SDs). Bersama, in a statement today, said the candidates would also sign four statutory undertakings and a conditional letter of resignation, including an agreement to a RM2 million penalty bond if they breach the anti-party-hopping pledge. "Details of the assets, debts, income, and expenditure of each candidate will be uploaded to the Bersama website for public access starting at 10 pm tomorrow," the statement read. In addition to the candidates' asset declarations, the party will submit its expenditure statement and campaign funding sources for the Johor polls after the campaigning period ends. Meanwhile, Bersama said the candidate announcement ceremony will be held at 8 pm tomorrow at the Paragon Market Place car park here. JOHOR BAHRU, June 25 (Bernama) -- UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi's decision to leave the party stemmed from dissatisfaction over his son not being considered as a candidate for the Rengit state seat, according to UMNO secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki. Revealing the matter in a Facebook post, Asyraf Wajdi also described Mohd Puad's allegation that the Johor palace controlled Johor UMNO and had ordered the dissolution of the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) as slander. He claimed Mohd Puad had previously threatened to criticise the party and quit UMNO if the party leadership did not accede to his request. “He wrote to me at length, threatening to quit the party and attack UMNO if the party leadership did not consider his son as a candidate for the Rengit seat. “It is true that his son is young and has considerable potential to be groomed as a future leader. However, the party must take many factors into account when selecting candidates for an election,” he said. Asyraf Wajdi further claimed that Mohd Puad had made a similar threat during the presidency of Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, warning that he would leave UMNO if he were not renominated as the Member of Parliament for Batu Pahat. Asyraf Wajdi stressed that UMNO is not a hereditary political party that prioritises family members or relatives for leadership positions. “The party's struggle is far greater than personal interests, family demands or individual disappointment. UMNO has contributed significantly by providing opportunities, positions and a platform for many leaders to serve and build their reputation. “It is therefore inappropriate for the party to be threatened and attacked simply because personal wishes were not fulfilled,” he said. Asyraf Wajdi said UMNO must remain steadfast as a party championing race, religion and the nation, and should not bow to pressure from any individual. Earlier today, Mohd Puad announced on Facebook that he was resigning from UMNO with immediate effect, saying the decision was made voluntarily and would allow him to express his views more freely. JOHOR BAHRU, June 25 -- UMNO's Supreme Council member Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi announced his departure from the party with immediate effect today. In a statement posted on Facebook today, the incumbent for Rengit state assembly seat said the decision was made without any coercion and would allow him to voice his views freely. "Without any hesitation, I announce my departure from UMNO with immediate effect from today, June 25, 2026. Therefore, UMNO need not go through the trouble of expelling me. "It will also make it easier for me to hold differing views without being accused of stabbing the party in the back. I am now free to criticise UMNO, a platform that I love and respect for the Malays and Malaysians," he said. Mohd Puad said there were many other examples which, in his view, showed that Onn Hafiz was merely a "pak turut" (yes-man), effectively reducing Johor UMNO to a "tethered puppet". He said his decision to leave the party was an act of "political courage" aimed at exposing what he described as wrongdoing before it became more serious. Mohd Puad, who is also a former Johor State Legislative Assembly Speaker, dismissed suggestions that his decision was driven by personal interests. Yesterday, the former Batu Pahat Member of Parliament hinted that he would make an important announcement after claiming there were irregularities in the selection of Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates for the Johor state election. He had earlier confirmed that he would not defend the Rengit state seat in the upcoming election despite winning it in the 2022 Johor state election and had proposed that younger candidates be given the opportunity to contest. In the 12th General Election, Mohd Puad won the Batu Pahat parliamentary seat after defeating PAS candidate Muhammad Abdullah with a majority of 12,968 votes. The former Batu Pahat UMNO division chief contested the seat again in the 13th General Election but lost to PKR candidate Datuk Mohd Idris Jusi by a majority of 1,524 votes. JOHOR BAHRU, June 24 — Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the announcement of Pakatan Harapan's candidates for the Johor state election (PRN) sends a clear message that the contest should remain a competition between political parties, centered on policies, performance and the future of the people, yesterday. He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had stressed that the state election must not involve or associate other institutions, but instead be conducted in a mature and democratic manner. "The Prime Minister has made it clear that this election should be fought on the basis of party strength, policies and track records. It must remain a contest between political parties without dragging other institutions into the political arena," Fahmi said. He noted that Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail had confirmed that seat negotiations within Pakatan Harapan had been successfully concluded, allowing the coalition to focus entirely on mobilising its election machinery, strengthening logistics and delivering accurate information to voters across Johor. JOHOR BAHRU, June 23 — Prime Minister and Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has officially announced 56 candidates who will contest under the PH banner in the upcoming Johor state election, expressing confidence that the coalition is entering the race with a strong record of achievement and a clear vision for the state's future, last night. Speaking at the candidate announcement event, Anwar said the selected candidates reflect Johor's diverse, multi-ethnic society and are committed to addressing local issues that are closest to the hearts of the people. He highlighted the Federal Government's achievements under the MADANI administration, stating that PH is contesting the election based on its proven track record and commitment to bringing meaningful change. PETALING JAYA, JUNE 22 -- The Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party PAS has not ruled out contesting several seats traditionally held by the Democratic Action Party DAP in the upcoming Negeri Sembilan state election on Aug 1. Negeri Sembilan PAS chief Fairuz Isa said the party is preparing to contest more than 10 seats, similar to its strategy in the 2023 state election, while also aiming to defend the three seats it currently holds. He said final seat allocations will depend on negotiations with other political partners, especially in the event of continued cooperation within the opposition bloc. “There are parties willing to work with us, and during seat negotiations, we may face limited Malay-majority seats to contest,” he was quoted as saying in Seremban. He added that PAS is considering seats currently held by Pakatan Harapan and DAP where Malay voters make up about 40% of the electorate. Fairuz said the party’s candidate selection process is about 90% complete, with emphasis on integrity, service capability, and candidates aged below 60. He also urged party members and machinery to respect and accept any final decision made by the leadership. In the 2023 state election, the opposition coalition Perikatan Nasional won five of the 36 seats it contested. Within the coalition, PAS secured Paroi, Serting and Bagan Pinang, while Bersatu won Labu and Gemencheh.
