KUALA LUMPUR, April 10 -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged all parties to focus on economic issues facing the country rather than internal political matters. Anwar, who is also PKR president, said this includes calls by several party leaders for action to be taken against former PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli. “It is okay. I advise them to remain calm and focus on economic issues facing the country, which are far more serious than personal matters,” he told reporters after performing Friday prayers and solat hajat at Masjid Nurussaadah here today. Previously, several party leaders, including PKR Central Leadership Council member A. Kumaresan, had called for action to be taken against Rafizi, alleging that the Pandan MP was undermining the party. Earlier, Rafizi challenged PKR to sack him when defending several statements he made against the party leadership, which were listed in the second show-cause letter issued yesterday. Rafizi has reportedly been vocal in criticising the government and PKR since stepping down as PKR deputy president and resigning as economy minister in May last year.

Former Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has emphasized that unity among Malays is essential for winning elections and forming the federal government, cautioning that fragmentation across multiple parties will weaken their chances. In a Facebook post, Dr. Mahathir highlighted the enduring relevance of the slogan “Bersatu Teguh, Bercerai Roboh” (United We Stand, Divided We Fall), while noting that some leaders still equate becoming prime minister with heading a political party. He stressed that such thinking ignores electoral realities, pointing out that no party can secure a general election victory if votes are split among too many factions. “If you do not win the general election, it is not possible to become prime minister, even if you have support from the party you lead,” he said, questioning the emphasis on party leadership as a route to the premiership. Dr. Mahathir added that consolidating support is critical for Malay leadership to prevail, warning that fielding too many candidates in the same constituency could result in collective defeat. He concluded that the priority should be on unity and strategic coordination, rather than individual ambitions, to ensure electoral success

KUALA LUMPUR, March 31 — Malaysia has entered a new era in labour protection with the enforcement of the Gig Workers Act 2025 [Act 872], marking a major milestone in safeguarding the rights and welfare of workers in the rapidly expanding digital economy. The landmark legislation, which officially comes into force today, reflects the strong commitment of the MADANI Government under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to ensure that economic progress goes hand in hand with social justice. Described as a bold and comprehensive move, the Act provides long-awaited legal recognition and protection for gig workers, a sector that has grown significantly in recent years due to technological advancements and shifting employment trends. With an estimated 1.64 million gig workers in Malaysia set to benefit, the law introduces key safeguards including basic workers’ rights, improved transparency in contractual agreements, clearer dispute resolution mechanisms, and stronger social security protections. Officials подчеркнули that Malaysia’s approach places it ahead of regional peers such as Singapore, Indonesia, and Philippines, where gig worker protections are still being introduced gradually or remain limited to specific sectors. In contrast, Malaysia’s dedicated legal framework positions the country among Asia’s leaders in addressing the challenges of the gig economy. The Ministry of Human Resources, Ministry of Human Resources Malaysia, played a central role in developing the Act, working closely with a wide range of stakeholders including gig worker associations, trade unions, academics, and media representatives. “This is not just about economic growth, but about fairness and inclusion,” the government said, emphasizing that the goal is to build a digital economy that is not only innovative and fast-growing, but also equitable and sustainable. The introduction of Act 872 is seen as a defining step in positioning Malaysia not merely as a participant in the regional gig economy, but as a model nation demonstrating that technological advancement and social protection can progress together. The government expressed appreciation to all parties involved in shaping the legislation, noting that the achievement reflects a collective national effort to secure a more just and resilient future of work.

Ramanan Stands Firm: Defending PKR as a House That Must Not Be Torn Down from Within

KUALA LUMPUR, 6 APRIL — A Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) convention in Johor was briefly disrupted yesterday following a tense exchange between party leaders R. Ramanan and Hassan Abdul Karim yesterday. The confrontation began when YB Datuk Seri Ramanan, a PKR vice-president, delivered a speech that included sharp criticism of Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli. In his remarks, YB Ramanan questioned Rafizi’s actions and suggested they had been detrimental to the party. MP Hassan, the Pasir Gudang Member of Parliament, interrupted the speech, objecting to the criticism on the grounds that Datuk Seri Rafizi was not present to respond. He argued that party conventions should not be used as a platform to attack absent colleagues. The situation quickly escalated as YB Datu Seri Ramanan defended his stance, insisting that party members must prioritise unity and address internal issues openly. MP Hassan, however, maintained that such criticisms should be handled through proper channels rather than aired publicly. The verbal exchange grew increasingly heated, drawing attention from delegates and briefly halting proceedings before order was restored. The incident highlights ongoing tensions within PKR, particularly over differing views on leadership accountability and how internal disagreements should be managed. Following the event, MP Hassan reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with how the matter was handled and called for a more appropriate forum for debate. The party has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident. --Minutes MY / Igneseous Noris

Ramanan has called on party members to strengthen unity and enhance organisational readiness as People's Justice Party (PKR) gears up for the upcoming Johor state elections. Speaking at the Johor PKR Convention, Ramanan, who serves as the party’s Vice President, said the gathering was more than just a routine assembly, describing it as a crucial platform to reinforce unity, coordinate efforts, and reinvigorate the spirit of struggle among members at all levels. He said all party machinery across Johor must immediately update their preparations, strengthen internal structures, and ensure disciplined and well-organised operations to secure victory in the state polls. YB Ramanan, who accompanied Prime Minister and PKR President Anwar Ibrahim at the event, also highlighted Malaysia’s resilience amid global economic uncertainty. He noted that policies introduced under the MADANI Government have helped maintain the country’s economic and financial stability despite ongoing global challenges. At the same time, he urged party members to enhance grassroots communication and actively counter misinformation and false narratives that could undermine public confidence in the government. He stressed that accurate information and facts must be consistently communicated to the people. Emphasising that unity is the party’s greatest strength, Ramanan called on all members to remain loyal to the leadership and prioritise the party’s struggle over personal interests. “This fight requires commitment, loyalty, and sincerity from every member. With unity and confidence in our leadership, we can defend the people’s mandate and ensure the reform agenda continues for a better Malaysia,” he said, adding that PKR remains a shared home for all its members. --Minutes MY / Igneseous Noris --Photo: FB Ramanan Ramankrishnan

MUAR--Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) has expressed disappointment with the Supreme Council of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) because the appointment of the Opposition Leader has not yet been made, while individuals who have been dismissed from the party continue to use the position. Its president, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, said he had sent a letter suggesting that the appointment should be made immediately, but to date no action has been taken. "It is certainly not appropriate for an unqualified person to still be hanging around using the position as Opposition Leader. "If it's empty, fill it in...there won't be any (candidates). If there are candidates, there's no need to wait for Parliament to convene." "PN Secretary-General, Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan can write a letter to the Speaker to propose the chosen candidate," he said at the Pagoh Parliamentary Aidilfitri Open House at the Pagoh Youth and Sports Complex here, on Sunday. Muhyiddin added that the delay in appointing the Opposition Leader could affect the dignity and image of Perikatan Nasional in the eyes of the people. "This is not the right of Bersatu, not the right of Pas, not the right of the Malaysian People's Movement Party (Gerakan), not the right of the Malaysian Indian People's Party (MIPP). This is the right of PN." "I have led PN since it was established, almost five years. I know this is not difficult. When there is a decision, it should be implemented immediately. "I request that the PN Supreme Council, especially the newly appointed PN Secretary and Chairman (Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar), pay serious attention to this issue and resolve it as soon as possible," he said. Earlier on Friday, PN was reported to have not yet finalised the election of the Parliamentary Opposition Leader. PN chairman, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, said there were several processes that needed to be completed before a final decision was made. The issue of the new Opposition Leader arose after Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin was dismissed from Bersatu and there was pressure, especially from his old party, claiming that he was no longer entitled to hold the position because he was no longer a party member.

MANJUNG -- UMNO welcomes Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's statement hinting that the 16th General Election (GE16) will not be held in the near future, instead stressing that priority must be given to efforts to address the people's cost of living challenges. UMNO Secretary-General Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said that in the current situation where the country is facing global uncertainty, all parties should put aside the power struggle and focus fully on the welfare of the people. "Currently, the country is facing a major crisis, so it is appropriate for us not to think too much about the struggle for power and position alone." "What is most important is that the country's leaders continue to focus on how to ensure that the people are able to cope with the increasingly high cost of living," he said. He said this after officiating the Simultaneous Opening Ceremony of the 2026 UMNO Branch Conference and the Lumut Division UMNO Aidilfitri Banquet at the Merdeka Hall, Manjung Municipal Council here today. Also present was UMNO Supreme Working Council member (MKT) Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir, who is also the Lumut UMNO Division Chief. Yesterday, Anwar hinted that the Dewan Rakyat would not be dissolved in the near future to make way for the 16th general election, but rather that the government wanted to focus on economic recovery and the well-being of the people. Asyraf Wajdi said the increase in world oil prices due to geopolitical factors and international conflicts were among the main challenges beyond the country's control, thus directly impacting the people's daily expenses. "The approach suggested by the Prime Minister reflects the value of responsibility and high concern for the reality that the people are currently facing." "In the context of Barisan Nasional (BN), our stance is clear, which is to focus on our best efforts to help the people. When the people are facing a crisis, it is more important for us to focus on their welfare and well-being," he said. -- BERNAMA

IPOH: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has hinted that he will not hold the 16th General Election (GE16) in the near future. Instead, he said, the priority now is to face the economic crisis caused by the conflict in West Asia. According to him, the current oil price surge crisis is an economic reality, not a political one. "This is not about political battles, being enemies with each other. I won't have an election in a month or two, be patient for a while. Tomorrow is election time, let's fight. Now it's work. Enough of politics, wake up, save our country," he said. He said this when speaking at the opening ceremony of the Perak State Civil Society Programme (PMR) 2026 at Bulatan Sultan Azlan Shah Meru, Ipoh on Saturday. According to him, the current situation requires all parties, including leaders and the people, to focus on efforts to strengthen the economy and maintain national security. He said that the current international conflict is also putting pressure on global oil prices, logistics costs and the supply chain, which ultimately affects the people. --ASTRO AWANI
