KUALA LUMPUR, November 3 – Malaysia plans to strengthen drug detection at its entry points with more advanced technology.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said existing airport scanners may not detect drugs hidden using sophisticated methods.
He explained that conventional scanners mainly detect weapons and explosives. Therefore, authorities need better equipment to identify prohibited substances.
New Technology to Strengthen Airport Security
Anwar said the government is introducing new facilities to improve drug detection.
The technology will support existing screening measures, including the K9 Detection Dog Unit.
However, he acknowledged that some passengers may feel uncomfortable when detection dogs are used during inspections.
The government has already acquired the new detection equipment.
At present, the facilities are available only at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
Existing Scanners Have Limitations
Anwar said drug smuggling methods continue to change.
As a result, enforcement agencies must improve their detection capabilities.
He explained that some drugs may be concealed in ways that older scanners cannot easily identify.
The new technology aims to help authorities detect these substances more effectively.
Government Focuses on Stronger Drug Prevention
Anwar shared the information during the Ministers’ Question Time session in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday.
He stressed the importance of improving security at Malaysia’s entry points.
The government aims to strengthen inspections and prevent drug syndicates from exploiting weaknesses in existing screening systems.
