PUTRAJAYA, September 18 2026, The conditional pardon allowing former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest does not weaken the government’s commitment to combating corruption and abuse of power, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today.
Anwar said all corruption cases, including ongoing proceedings involving Najib, must continue in accordance with the law.
He said his role as Prime Minister was to advise on the legal implications, national stability and the rule of law, while considering the Attorney-General’s written advice.
“Ultimately, the Constitution provides for the powers of His Majesty the King, and I hope we can accept the decision,” he said after Friday prayers at Surau Nur Perdana, Precinct 10, today.
Anwar stressed that Malaysia must remain firm in addressing corruption and abuse of power, with public support needed to uphold the rule of law.
Asked about standard operating procedures for house arrest, he said the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Home Ministry.
Earlier today, Sultan Ibrahim granted Najib a conditional pardon, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, subject to a RM50 million fine.
The decision was made at the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya at Istana Negara.
