PUTRAJAYA, September 18 2026, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged the Negeri Sembilan government and Menteri Besar Datuk Ismail Lasim to stand firm and not bow to political pressure in handling the controversy involving the state’s royal institution.
Anwar said any attempt to remove or depose a Ruler was a serious matter under Malaysia’s constitutional monarchy system.
He stressed that all constitutional provisions, laws and established procedures must be fully respected in addressing the issue.
The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) said yesterday that an April 19 proclamation concerning the position of Yang Dipertuan Besar Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir was invalid as it did not comply with the mandatory requirements under Article 10 of the Laws of the Constitution of Negeri Sembilan 1959.
The AGC also stated that the Menteri Besar and State Executive Council did not have unilateral authority to depose the Yang Dipertuan Besar or declare the position vacant.
Anwar said he had reviewed the AGC’s full statement and respected the laws and customs governing Negeri Sembilan’s unique system involving the Yang Dipertuan Besar and the Undang.
He said any proposal concerning the position must follow the prescribed constitutional and legal procedures.
“What is important now is that the position of the Yang Dipertuan Besar remains secure. We pray that Tuanku Muhriz will continue to reign and carry out his duties well,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Negeri Sembilan State Secretary’s Office said the state administration would not gazette or implement the April 19 proclamation, in line with the AGC’s view that such action would be unconstitutional.
The Dewan Keadilan dan Undang (DKU) has also reiterated that Tuanku Muhriz remains the lawful Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan.
