KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 -- The Malaysian Prison Department will fully cooperate with relevant authorities in studying the findings of SUHAKAM's public inquiry into the Taiping Prison riot last year. In a statement today, the department said it views every finding, recommendation and issue in the report with the utmost seriousness, including allegations involving prison management and staff. "We will cooperate fully to examine the report thoroughly, in detail, and with integrity, to ensure every issue raised receives proper attention. "The department remains committed to safety, welfare, rehabilitation and human rights compliance, in line with legal provisions and established prison management standards," the statement read. The department also urged all parties to refrain from speculation or making premature conclusions that could affect this process and further action by authorities. Last Monday, SUHAKAM's public inquiry panel released its final findings on the Jan 17, 2025, Taiping Prison riot, which killed an elderly inmate. The panel suggested turning Taiping Prison into a museum, saying it is no longer fit for use as a prison. -- BERNAMA

PUTRAJAYA, May 27 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his wife, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, today joined thousands of Muslims in performing Aidiladha prayers at the Putra Mosque in an atmosphere marked by simplicity, harmony and devotion. Anwar said the gathering was filled with the spirit of togetherness as congregants chanted the Aidiladha takbir and listened to a sermon titled “Sacrifice Demands Sincerity”. According to the Prime Minister, the sermon reminded Muslims that true sacrifice goes beyond wealth and physical effort, but also involves overcoming ego, arrogance, hatred and all negative traits that distance individuals from the blessings and guidance of Allah SWT. He added that the sermon also encouraged Muslims to strengthen ukhuwah, cultivate compassion and generosity towards others, and embrace the spirit of sacrifice as the foundation for building a united, caring and morally grounded society. After the prayers, Anwar and Wan Azizah took the opportunity to greet, shake hands and take photographs with congregants in celebration of the blessed occasion. KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim held a telephone conversation with President Masoud Pezeshkian of the Iran to convey Eid Mubarak greetings and express solidarity and prayers from Malaysians for the people of Iran. Anwar said Malaysia hopes Iran will soon return to peace and that all tensions and bloodshed can be resolved through peaceful means, wisdom and responsible diplomacy. He reiterated Malaysia’s firm stance in condemning all forms of attacks and invasions, including drone strikes and military actions involving Israel and the United States, which he said continue to claim innocent lives. The Prime Minister also expressed appreciation to Iran for its support and cooperation in assisting with the release of a Malaysian vessel in the Strait of Hormuz recently, adding that mutual respect and friendship should continue to strengthen relations between nations. According to Anwar, Pezeshkian also conveyed appreciation for Malaysia’s consistent position in upholding peace, justice and humanitarian principles on the international stage. IPOH: The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, agreed to go last night to officiate the Al-Muhajirin Mosque, Kampung Ulu Chepor, Chemor here. His Majesty arrived at approximately 8.20pm and was welcomed by Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and State Secretary Datuk Ahmad Suaidi Abdul Rahim. Also present was the President of the Perak Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council Tan Sri Mohd Annuar Zaini and the Director of the Perak Islamic Religious Department Datuk Harith Fadzilah Abdul Halim. Sultan Nazrin then agreed to draw the curtain as a symbolic opening of the mosque before joining in the takbir raya in conjunction with Aidiladha and performing the Isyak prayer in congregation with approximately 400 worshippers. The Al Muhajirin Mosque, built in 2018, has been in full use since March 2025. The mosque was built at a cost of RM6 million on a 1.9 hectare plot of land and can accommodate up to 1,200 worshippers at a time. DUNGUN: Four people were injured, including two children, while 14 others survived an accident involving five vehicles at Kilometre 337.7 of the East Coast Highway 2 (LPT2) near the Rest Stop and Paka Treatment Centre near here last night. Paka Fire and Rescue Station Operations Commander, Senior Fire Officer II Mohd Bakri Abdul Rahman said that in the incident at 7.30pm, the four victims were in a Nissan Almera car. "All the injured victims were taken to Dungun Hospital by the Civil Defence Force ambulance to receive further treatment," he said when contacted. Mohd Bakri said the survivors involved two individuals who were travelling in a Toyota Vios and two others who were travelling in a Proton Persona. He said six others, including four children, survived in a Toyota Vellfire multi-purpose vehicle while four others, including two children, were in a Perodua Ativa car. "Members are monitoring to ensure there are no more injured victims at the location to be taken to the hospital," he said. -- BERNAMA

TANJONG MALIM, May 27 — The body of 19-year-old Nur Izzati Humaira Azizul, who died after going missing while hiking at Bukit Changkat Asa near here last Saturday, was safely laid to rest at the Felda Trolak Utara Islamic Cemetery at 3.05am today. The burial took place after an autopsy was completed at Sungai Buloh Hospital (HSB), Selangor, at 12.19am. Earlier, the body of the second of four siblings was brought to the Ar-Riduaniah Mosque in Felda Trolak Utara for funeral prayers. Her father, Azizul Abdul Aziz, 48, personally led the funeral prayers at about 2.20am, attended by around 50 congregants. Speaking to reporters after the burial, Azizul expressed his gratitude to Malaysians and all agencies involved in the search and rescue (SAR) operation following his daughter’s disappearance on May 23. “I would like to thank all Malaysians who prayed and gave words of encouragement throughout the search for my daughter,” he said. He also urged the public not to spread unfounded speculation regarding the incident. “What our family hopes for now is that everyone will continue to pray and avoid making inappropriate assumptions,” he added. Azizul described this year’s Aidiladha celebration as especially emotional for the family following the tragic loss. “From now on, every Hari Raya will remind us of the day Angah left us. No matter what, she will always remain in our hearts,” he said emotionally. “My wife and I can testify that Angah was the best daughter to us. God willing, may she be placed among the gardens of heaven,” he said. Yesterday, SAR personnel discovered Nur Izzati Humaira’s body at about 11.59am, approximately 500 metres from the location where she was last seen and about one kilometre from the Incident Control Post (PKTK). She was believed to have gone missing at around 10.50am last Saturday while descending the hill with her family. According to reports, the teenager decided to walk ahead alone toward the foot of the hill after feeling hot and exhausted before she was later reported missing. -- MINUTESMY

KAJANG, May 26 -- The investigation paper into a shooting that left three men dead in Durian Tunggal, Melaka, in November last year has been resubmitted to the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC). Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar said the investigation team had completed several additional directives requested by the prosecution, adding that the paper had already been referred to the AGC four times previously for guidance. "All AGC directives have been acted upon, and the latest investigation paper was submitted yesterday for further direction and advice. We have recorded statements from 63 witnesses to complete it," he told a press conference at the Kajang District Police Headquarters today. On the AGC's additional directives, Kumar said these included re-recording statements from several witnesses to clarify specific facts in the case. On Nov 24, 2025, three men aged between 24 and 29 were shot dead after one of them allegedly swung a parang at a police corporal at an oil palm plantation in Durian Tunggal at around 4 am. JOHOR BAHRU, May 26 -- The Johor Road Transport Department (JPJ) issued 1,987 P (22) notices for various traffic offences during the first two days of the 2026 Hari Raya Aidiladha Special Operation, which began on May 24 and is scheduled to end on May 31. Its director Zulkarnain Yasin said enforcement action was taken in accordance with the Road Transport Act 1987 and related regulations. He said among the offences recorded were not having a Motor Vehicle Licence, with 402 notices issued, not possessing a Competent Driving Licence (410 notices), technical offences (393), no insurance coverage (342 notices), and major offences (145). “The major offences included not wearing a seat belt, which topped the list with 51 notices, followed by not wearing a helmet (36 notices) and carrying excessive load (18 notices),” he said in a statement today. He added that during the same period, a total of 17,236 vehicles were inspected, with eight motorcycles, 15 cars and eight staff buses impounded as they were deemed unsafe or unfit to be on the road. Meanwhile, Zulkarnain said statistical analysis found that public awareness of the Perception of Being Caught (POBC), or the probability of being caught committing an offence, had increased by 93 per cent over the first two days of the operation. According to him, the operation was carried out to strengthen law enforcement, with continuous monitoring at accident blackspots across all districts to ensure the smooth and safe movement of road users. He also said the operation was conducted to ensure compliance with road laws remained at an optimal level, in addition to raising awareness of safety aspects and responsibilities among road users. --BERNAMA

HULU SELANGOR, May 26 (Bernama) -- A teenage girl who was believed to have lost her way while hiking at Bukit Changkat Asa here four days ago was found dead by rescuers today. Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant operations director Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said the body of Nur Izzati Humaira Azizul, 19, was found off the hiking trail by the search and rescue (SAR) team at about 11.59 am. “The victim’s body was found about 500 metres from the last known location where she was seen and one kilometre from the incident control post. “It took the SAR team about 20 minutes to bring the body to the control post using a stretcher,” he told Bernama when met at the control post. The body was handed over to the police before being taken to the Kuala Kubu Bharu Hospital, he added. Earlier, the SAR operation, which entered its fourth day today, resumed at 8 am involving various security agencies after being suspended at 6.30 pm yesterday. Nur Izzati Humaira was believed to have lost her way at about 10.50 am last Saturday while descending the hill with her family after deciding to walk ahead alone as she felt hot and tired. The case drew widespread attention on social media and in the news over the past few days, with many netizens expressing concern and offering prayers and well-wishes for the teenager’s safe return throughout the SAR operation. Meanwhile, Ahmad Mukhlis said the victim was found by the Special Tactical Operation and Rescue Team of Malaysia (STORM) in a flat area, lying on her back with no visible signs of injury. He said the body was also found intact with no indications of attacks by wild animals. “As Nur Izzati Humaira was wearing long-sleeved clothing at the time of the incident, there were no obvious signs of physical injury visible externally,” he said. He said the victim was found about six metres from a trail leading to an orchard area, which was not part of the designated hiking route on the hill. KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 (Bernama) -- Members of the Cabinet today urged Muslims to embrace the blessings of the Day of Arafah and use it as an opportunity for spiritual reflection, unity and prayer for the peace and prosperity of Malaysia. The Day of Arafah, observed today on the ninth day of Zulhijjah, marks the climax of the haj pilgrimage as millions of Muslims gather for wukuf at the Plain of Arafah in Saudi Arabia. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, in a Facebook post, encouraged Muslims to take advantage of the sacred occasion by increasing prayers, remembrance, repentance and seeking forgiveness from Allah SWT. “Happy fasting on the Day of Arafah. May we always remain under His mercy, love and protection,” he said. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, said Arafah Day carries important lessons in nation-building within the framework of Malaysia MADANI. She said this is because, on the Day of Arafah, millions of haj pilgrims come together, dressed alike, regardless of their race, background or social status, standing on the same ground and worshipping the one and only Allah SWT. “This is the important lesson we must embrace from the Day of Arafah in building a harmonious nation founded on diversity, strengthened through unity and guided by compassion and mutual respect,” she said. Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, on the other hand, described Arafah Day as one of the most significant and blessed days in Islam, filled with mercy, forgiveness and spiritual rewards. As such, he said Muslims who are not performing haj are highly encouraged to increase acts of worship, prayers and remembrance, while also observing voluntary fasting. “Let us seize the blessings of the Day of Arafah with sincerity and hope, renewing our repentance and drawing closer to Allah SWT,” Armizan said. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said the Arafah Day should also remind Muslims of the meaning of servitude, repentance and the power of prayer despite the busyness and challenges of life. “Let us increase our istighfar, pray for the well-being of those we love and pray that Allah SWT continues to guide our steps in life with His mercy and guidance. “May all our deeds be accepted and all Muslims be granted blessings, forgiveness and peace of mind.
