PUTRAJAYA, May 7 -- The Court of Appeal today allowed the Malaysian Bar's bid to challenge the prosecution’s decision to halt all further proceedings against Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in the Yayasan Akalbudi corruption case. A three-member bench comprising Justice Datuk Faizah Jamaludin, presiding with Justices Datuk Dr Lim Hock Leng and Datuk Nadzarin Wok Nordin, ruled that the Bar’s application was not frivolous and had raised arguable points of law that warranted a full hearing at the substantive stage. “This is an appropriate, rare and exceptional case that warrants a full judicial review. Leave is granted to the appellant to commence judicial review against the Attorney-General’s impugned decision. Thus, the High Court’s decision dated June 27, 2024, is set aside. “The matter is remitted to the High Court for the substantive hearing of the judicial review. There shall be no order as to costs,” Justice Faizah said in the unanimous decision. On June 27, 2024, the Kuala Lumpur High Court dismissed the Malaysian Bar’s application for leave to initiate judicial review proceedings, ruling that the application failed to meet the requisite threshold for judicial review. The Bar subsequently filed the present appeal.

CEBU (Philippines), May 7 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim arrived here today for a two-day visit to attend the 48th ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings. A special aircraft carrying Anwar and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, landed at the Brigadier General Benito N. Ebuen Air Base here at 1.50 pm, which is the same time as Kuala Lumpur. They were welcomed by the Philippines’ Department of Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin, Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro and Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Cynthia King-Chan. Also present was Malaysian Ambassador to the Philippines Datuk Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino Anthony. Anwar was also greeted by a guard of honour led by Brig Gen Joseph Archog, Wing Commander of the Philippine Air Force’s 220th Airlift Wing and welcomed by a troupe of traditional dancers at the airport. Upon arrival, Anwar will participate in the Special Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Summit, to be held on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit, where discussions will focus on sub-regional development. Later, he is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Laos and Singapore, before attending the BIMP-EAGA leaders’ dinner hosted by Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and his wife, Louise Araneta-Marcos. On May 8, Anwar will attend the opening of the 48th ASEAN Summit. He is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with his Vietnam and Thailand counterparts thereafter. He will later join a gala dinner hosted by Marcos and his wife before returning home. In a statement yesterday, the Foreign Ministry said the summit serves as an opportunity for Malaysia to share and exchange views on various issues on ASEAN Community building and the way forward.  Discussions will also focus on the impacts of the crisis in West Asia on the Southeast Asian region, ASEAN’s response towards ensuring regional energy and food security, as well as the safety of the bloc’s nationals in the affected areas. The Philippines took over the ASEAN chairmanship from Malaysia on Jan 1, 2026.  Themed “Navigating Our Future, Together,” the republic, during its tenure, seeks to steer ASEAN’s priorities through three pillars: Peace and Security Anchors, Prosperity Corridors, and People Empowerment.

KUALA LUMPUR -- A total of 464 fake content related to the global supply crisis was identified between March 29 and April 30, 2026, with 312 of them successfully taken down, said Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching. Apart from that, he said, a total of 65 investigation papers have been opened, with 15 cases referred to the Attorney General's Chambers, while the others are still under investigation. "The rapid spread of false information, amplified by artificial intelligence (AI), poses a major challenge to public trust," he said in his speech during the opening of the HAWANA 2026 Media Forum, here, today. Also present were Deputy Secretary-General of the Ministry of Communications (Strategic Communications and Creative Industries) Nik Kamaruzaman Nik Husin, Chairman of the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, Bernama Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Bernama Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj. Teo said cases of fake content, including fake accounts and impersonation of public figures, have increased sharply in recent years, jumping from 6,297 cases in 2023 to 63,652 in 2024 and 98,503 in 2025. "As of April 30 this year alone, 60,829 such contents have been taken down by the platform," he said. He said the development showed the need for those involved in the world of journalism to always uphold credibility amidst the ever-changing digital landscape. Meanwhile, Teo urged the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) to play a greater role and take a more careful and prudent approach in handling media-related issues. He said this was important following Malaysia's latest ranking of 95th in the Reporters Without Borders index, down from 88th previously, reflecting ongoing concerns in the media landscape. "While the safety of journalists has improved, the decline in the media economy and legislation remains a concern, and this is not a position we can be complacent about." “Journalism is a pillar of democracy,” he said, adding that disputes over reporting should be resolved through the MMC as the ultimate arbiter. The MMC, established in February last year, is a self-regulatory body that aims to uphold journalistic ethics, formulate codes of conduct and safeguard the welfare of media practitioners. The council is governed by a board comprising representatives of media organisations, practitioners and public interest groups, including academics and the general public, with the participation of delegates from Sabah and Sarawak.

IPOH -- The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, has granted permission for youth to be given the honour of delivering Friday sermons at mosques across the state tomorrow in conjunction with the celebration of National Youth Day on May 15. The President of the Perak Islamic Religious and Malay Custom Council (MAIPk), Tan Sri Mohd Annuar Zaini, said Sultan Nazrin said this to appreciate and recognise the important role of youth in this country. He said Sultan Nazrin would also deliver a Friday sermon in Perak tomorrow on the theme of youth with the title "Youth: The Driving Force of National Progress". "The Perak State Youth and Sports Department has submitted 94 names of youth leaders who have been approved by the Sultan of Perak to deliver sermons at mosques and suraus in Perak on Friday, May 8, 2026," he said in a statement today. His Majesty’s private aircraft landed safely at Vnukovo-2 International Airport at 4.20 pm local time. Upon arrival, Sultan Ibrahim was received by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Andrey Rudenko, and Director-General of the Protocol Department of the Russian Federation, Bogdashev Igor Viktorovich. Petaling Jaya District Police Chief, ACP Shamsudin Mamat said the man, in his 40s, was arrested last Monday and remanded for four days until tomorrow to assist in the investigation. He said the remand period of two men in their 20s and 30s who were previously detained expired today, and would be extended to assist with investigations. "The investigation papers regarding this case will be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor this week," he said in a statement today. Previously, the media reported that a man in his 30s was found unconscious in a hotel before being reported dead at 11.23pm.
