KUALA LUMPUR, May 21 -- The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has opened an investigation paper into defamatory and insulting content against His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, believed to have been posted via a fake TikTok account. Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk M. Kumar said the investigation was being conducted by the Classified Criminal Investigation Unit (USJT). “Yes, we have opened an investigation paper and are conducting further investigations through USJT, Bukit Aman CID,” he said. “At present, the investigation is being carried out under the Sedition Act and Section 504 of the Penal Code for intentionally insulting a person with intent to provoke a breach of the peace,” he said when contacted today. He said the probe was also being carried out under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for the improper use of network facilities or applications. Kumar reminded the public to be more careful when posting content on social media, particularly on matters involving the 3R issues of race, religion and royalty. “The CID will not compromise on matters that could disrupt public safety and order, to ensure that peace and prosperity are always maintained,” he said. Yesterday, Bernama reported that the Johor Royal Press Office had called for stern action to be taken against those responsible for creating a fake TikTok account to slander and insult Sultan Ibrahim. According to a post on the King’s official Facebook page, the Royal Press Office said the account, using the name “Sultan Ibrahim Ismail”, was found to be using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to spread insulting content against His Majesty. Among the uploaded content was a video containing allegations that the King of Malaysia enjoyed eating pork, a post that it described as untrue and touching on sensitivities, given that His Majesty was a Malay Ruler and the Muslim Head of State. --BERNAMA

CYBERJAYA, May 21 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has issued a statutory demand to TikTok following the platform’s alleged failure to adequately moderate offensive and defamatory content directed at the Malaysian Royal Institution. In a media statement today, MCMC said the action was taken after the circulation of harmful content linked to an account claiming association with His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim. According to the commission, the content included offensive, false and threatening material, including AI-generated videos and manipulated images that could potentially violate Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) 1998, as well as other Malaysian laws. MCMC stressed that misuse of online platforms to spread false, insulting or harmful content, especially involving the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Malay Rulers, is viewed seriously due to its impact on public order, national harmony and respect for constitutional institutions. The commission also stated that TikTok’s moderation response was found to be unsatisfactory despite prior notifications and engagements, particularly in ensuring swift removal of harmful content and preventing its further dissemination. As part of the statutory demand, TikTok has been instructed to take immediate remedial measures, strengthen its content moderation systems and provide a formal explanation regarding its moderation failures. MCMC said it will continue taking firm and proportionate action, including further legal measures where necessary, to ensure digital platforms operating in Malaysia comply with local laws and maintain a safe, secure and respectful online environment. --SOURCE:MCMC CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS

PUTRAJAYA: The government sees the current global crisis as a catalyst to strengthen the country's economic structure, including placing emphasis on a high-value economy, energy transition and a more comprehensive approach in channeling aid to the people. Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said that unlike the COVID-19 pandemic which required a spending stimulus following the closure of economic activities, the current crisis started from pressure on oil supplies before spreading to other sectors and causing a more complex economic impact. "At that time (the COVID-19 pandemic), the need was to ensure that spending took place because economic activities were closed. Currently, the crisis we are facing started with pressure in terms of oil supply, then spread to other supplies. "This crisis started with imports and so on, but the effects are more severe in terms of economic impact," he said when speaking at the Economy Ministry's monthly gathering, here, today. He said that this situation meant that the government needed to focus on efforts to strengthen the country's economic resilience through more sustainable structural changes. "In the past, it was more about incentives, channeling all the incentives here and there. But managing the current situation is by strengthening our resilience," he said. Akmal Nasrullah said the current geopolitical crisis also sent a clear signal that focusing on high-value economies should be a priority, including the development of the semiconductor and sophisticated housekeeping sectors. He said the government is also strengthening efforts to increase people's income through the People's Income Initiative - Food Entrepreneur Initiative (IPR-INSAN) programme, which so far involves 1,125 vending machines nationwide. "Of that number, more than half or 58 percent were able to earn an average income of more than RM2,000," he said, adding that the cumulative sales record of the programme participants reached more than RM20 million. He said that the collaboration with the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) would also be expanded with the placement of approximately 50 of the machines, including in mosques, active suraus and educational institutions. Meanwhile, he said, the government will also implement the use of biodiesel starting June 1 to help extend the diesel supply period to 20 days a year, in addition to supporting the energy transition agenda and reducing carbon emissions. -- BERNAMA

PUTRAJAYA, May 21 -- Staff of the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) have been urged to enhance their skills and master new technologies such as generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) to improve the quality of public service delivery, making it more efficient, innovative and impactful for the people. Minister Nga Kor Ming said this is in line with the directive of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who has emphasised the importance of digital transformation in the public service. “In this regard, the MADANI Government has launched AI at Work 2.0, which provides civil servants with access to Google Workspace with Gemini, equipping them with Gen AI capabilities. “By leveraging tools such as Gemini, government officers can generate reports, summarise documents, and analyse data more quickly and accurately,” he said at the KPKT appreciation reception here today. Nga said this would not only reduce manual workload but also enable civil servants to focus more on strategic tasks and effective solutions to public issues. He also stressed that KPKT personnel must think globally and adopt a forward-looking perspective, particularly in policymaking. “Today, the world is moving at a very fast pace. Every development at the international level, whether in trade, economy, technology or geopolitics, will have a direct impact on the country and the well-being of the people. “Therefore, we can no longer work within a narrow scope or remain too comfortable with routine approaches. Instead, we must understand local issues while being alert to global developments so that every policy and decision made remains relevant, progressive and able to enhance the country’s competitiveness,” Nga said. A total of 441 KPKT staff who demonstrated excellent performance were honoured at the ceremony, which was also attended by Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu. -- BERNAMA
