KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim chaired the National Economic Action Council (MTEN) meeting on Monday, where the government reviewed Malaysia's food security, refugee management, and measures to strengthen the country's manufacturing sector amid ongoing global supply chain challenges. Anwar said the meeting was informed that the country's supply of staple food remains stable and sufficient, with the government committed to ensuring continuous food security, maintaining affordable food prices, and safeguarding the welfare of paddy farmers and local food producers. He stressed that ensuring a secure and sustainable food supply remains a key priority under the MADANI Government as it continues efforts to strengthen the nation's food ecosystem. The meeting also focused on the management of refugees, an issue that has attracted increasing public attention. Anwar said the government is implementing a more systematic refugee registration process while leveraging technology and data analytics to combat smuggling, human trafficking, document fraud, and illegal border crossings. He reaffirmed the government's firm stance that no refugee is exempt from Malaysian law, including holders of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) cards. "Refugees who commit criminal offences have already been prosecuted, and enforcement actions will continue without compromise in accordance with the country's laws," Anwar said. On the economic front, MTEN reviewed strategies to enhance the resilience of Malaysia's manufacturing sector, which continues to face pressures arising from disruptions in global supply chains. Among the industries highlighted was the plastics sector, which plays a critical supporting role in several strategic industries, including food packaging, electrical and electronics, automotive manufacturing, and medical devices. Anwar said the government takes seriously the concerns raised by industry players regarding rising operational costs and current market challenges. He has instructed the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), together with the Ministry of Economy, to conduct further engagement sessions with industry stakeholders to formulate practical solutions aimed at easing cost pressures while ensuring the long-term competitiveness and resilience of Malaysia's manufacturing ecosystem. KUALA LUMPUR, July 13 – Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the government is reviewing Malaysia's radio industry as part of efforts to strengthen the country's broadcasting ecosystem and ensure local radio remains relevant in the rapidly evolving digital landscape. Speaking after a town hall session with the management and representatives of local radio stations, Fahmi said the engagement provided an important platform for industry players to share their views, challenges and proposals directly with the government. He said the discussions focused on several key issues, including increasing the promotion of local music content, improving licensing models, safeguarding the long-term sustainability of the radio industry, and identifying strategies to help broadcasters remain competitive amid accelerating digital transformation. According to Fahmi, the feedback gathered during the session will contribute to the government's ongoing review of the industry's future direction. He said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will conduct a comprehensive study of the radio industry as part of the formulation of the National Broadcasting Policy. PUTRAJAYA, July 13 — Tension gripped the Federal Court on Monday as the fate of Muar Member of Parliament Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman hung in the balance following a split decision among a three-member judicial panel hearing the prosecution's final appeal. The courtroom fell silent after the first two judges delivered opposing views, leaving the final outcome to the third judge. Throughout the proceedings, the 34-year-old former Youth and Sports Minister, seated alone outside the dock, remained composed with his head bowed as he listened to the judgments. Court of Appeal President Datuk Seri Abu Bakar Jais, who chaired the panel, was the first to deliver his judgment. He ruled that Syed Saddiq should be acquitted of the first charge of abetting criminal breach of trust involving RM1 million. However, Abu Bakar found the former Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA) president guilty of one charge of misappropriation of RM120,000 and two money laundering charges involving RM50,000 each linked to funds belonging to Angkatan Bersatu Anak Muda (ARMADA). He proposed a sentence of six months' imprisonment and one stroke of the cane for the misappropriation offence. For each money laundering charge, he proposed six months' imprisonment and a RM5 million fine, with an additional two years' jail for each count in default of payment. The proceedings then took a dramatic turn when Federal Court judge Datuk Che Mohd Ruzima Ghazali delivered a dissenting judgment, disagreeing with Abu Bakar's findings. Che Mohd Ruzima upheld the Court of Appeal's earlier ruling, saying the conviction was unsafe and should not be reinstated. He found that the prosecution had failed to prove essential elements of the offences, including allegations that Syed Saddiq had dishonestly misappropriated RM120,000 belonging to ARMADA. He also noted that there was no evidence showing the funds collected were owned by Armada Bumi Bersatu Enterprise, weakening the prosecution's case. With one judge favouring conviction and another supporting acquittal, the appeal stood evenly split, leaving the final verdict to Federal Court judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah. Recognising the significance of the moment, Abu Bakar informed both the prosecution and defence that the final decision would depend on Sequerah's judgment and asked whether they wished to take a short break before proceedings continued. Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin responded humorously, saying, "I need to go to the restroom," prompting the court to adjourn for 10 minutes. When the hearing resumed, family members and supporters of Syed Saddiq watched anxiously from the public gallery as Sequerah began reading his judgment. Sequerah ultimately agreed with Che Mohd Ruzima, holding that the Court of Appeal had correctly found that the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt. "The respondent was lawfully entitled to the funds. I agree with the findings of the Court of Appeal and find no error that warrants appellate intervention," he said. His decision resulted in a 2-1 majority ruling dismissing the prosecution's appeal and fully acquitting Syed Saddiq of all charges. KUALA LUMPUR, July 13 -- The Communications and Multimedia (Amendment) Bill 2026, which aims to strengthen the universal service framework by incorporating national security considerations, was tabled for its first reading in the Dewan Rakyat today. Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil, when tabling the Bill, said it would be presented for second reading during the current parliamentary meeting. According to the Bill, the proposed amendments involve Section 202 of the principal Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), with Subclause 2(a) seeking to introduce new subsections 202(1A) and 202(1B). The amendments would empower the Minister to direct the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to support national universal service provision initiatives relating to the usage of network services or application services, or both, where such initiatives are deemed necessary in the interest of national security. The proposed provisions also allow for initiatives such as encouraging the installation of network facilities and the provision of network or application services to safeguard national security, where determination on national security matters would be made by the National Security Council under Section 4 of the National Security Council Act 2016. This additional category is to create a more comprehensive universal service provision framework, considering the evolution of the communications and multimedia industry, the advancement of technology and the needs of the country from a security aspect. The proposed subsection 202(1b) seeks to provide that any national universal service provision initiative shall be consistent with the objects of Act 588. Under Subclause 2(b), amendments to Section 202(2) would also enable the Minister to make regulations under Section 16 of Act 588 relating to national universal service initiatives. This Bill will not involve the Government in any extra financial expenditure. -- BERNAMA

In a 2-1 majority ruling, Federal Court judges Datuk Che Mohd Ruzima Ghazali and Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah held that the Court of Appeal had not erred in allowing Syed Saddiq's appeal in June last year. KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 13 -- Malaysia's stance on the imbalance of veto power in the United Nations (UN) Security Council, and the government's preparations to face the projected food supply crisis are among the focus of the Dewan Rakyat sitting today. According to the Meeting Order on the official Parliament website, during the question and answer session, Datuk Seri Sh Mohmed Puzi Sh Ali (BN-Pekan) asked the Foreign Minister to explain Malaysia's strategic approach in fighting for reform of the UN system, as well as efforts to strengthen the country's role and position in the international institution. Shaharizukirnain Abd Kadir (PN-Setiu) also asked the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security to state the government's contingency plan in dealing with the projected food supply crisis, as well as the effectiveness of incentives for producing states in boosting domestic self-sufficiency rates following the continuous increase in agricultural input costs due to the West Asian crisis. Also of interest was Datuk Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang)'s question to the Minister of Defence on whether the Malaysian Armed Forces' dependence on foreign suppliers affects the country's strategic asset development plans, as well as measures to reduce the risk of supply disruptions, delivery delays and contract cancellations in the future.
