KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 -- Malaysian consumers are increasingly shifting their spending during mega sales campaigns away from luxury goods towards essential items, as they prioritise offers from trusted sellers and brands. Based on Lazada Malaysia’s 6.6 campaign data, the platform said shoppers are now buying more groceries, infant formula, health products, personal care items and household appliances, compared with smartphones and beauty products that were once closely associated with mega sales periods. “Interest in discounts remains strong, but consumers are now more selective about where they shop. This is especially evident for products used at home, worn on the body, or part of daily family routines,” it said in a statement. Overall, Lazada Malaysia recorded a 465 per cent increase in sales during the 6.6 campaign compared with normal periods, or about 5.7 times higher than non-sale days. Sales through its wider trusted ecosystem - including LazMall official stores and verified global and cross-border sellers such as TMALL and Gmarket, grew even faster, more than 10-fold compared with non-campaign periods. LazMall alone posted a 12-fold increase. The data also showed Malaysians using mega sales to stock up on household essentials, with Lotus’s recording a 47-fold increase in sales, while Lazada Groceries rose 19-fold compared with normal days. “For groceries, trust is practical in nature. Buyers want familiar brands, confidence in expiry dates, reliable sourcing and dependable delivery. This makes Lazada not just a campaign destination, but increasingly a household shopping channel used more regularly,” it said. In the baby and family care segment, several brands posted strong growth, including S26 Gold Progress, Enfagrow A+ Official Store, Pediasure, Huggies, Kotex, Confidence and Poise. “These products are closely linked to children, the elderly, dependents and daily family routines. For Malaysian households, lower prices are only compelling when the source is trusted,” it added. Health and personal care products also recorded solid growth, with Ensure and Glucerna Official Store up four-fold, Kinohimitsu up 11-fold, and Eu Yan Sang up 29-fold. In beauty and personal care, Watsons recorded a nine-fold increase in orders, while Lancôme grew 255-fold and Kérastase 66-fold. Home appliances and smart devices followed a similar trend, with Xiaomi Official Store rising 40-fold, Roborock Malaysia 100-fold, and Tineco 78-fold compared with normal shopping days. The platform said the 8pm opening on June 5 contributed 16 per cent of total Malaysia sales within the first hour, the highest hourly concentration in Southeast Asia. By 11pm the same day, Malaysia accounted for 47 per cent of total sales and 38 per cent of total orders for the 6.6 campaign. “However, this speed does not mean consumers are buying blindly. Within the short promotional window, Malaysians still look for trust signals, from official stores and verified sellers to recognised brands, clear product information, warranties and reliable delivery,” it said. Across Southeast Asia, everyday essentials quietly formed a major share of 6.6 shopping carts. JOHOR BAHRU, JUNE 27 -- The candidate nomination process for the 16th Johor State Election (PRN) was completed at 10 am this morning, after all 56 nomination centres across the state closed. An hour is allocated for the submission of nomination forms, which begins at 9 am, before the Returning Officer (RO) announces the closure of the process at each nomination centre. The focus is now on the official declaration of the list of candidates eligible to contest as well as the number of candidates competing in each State Legislative Assembly (DUN) seat. Once the process is complete, the 14-day campaign period for the Johor state election officially begins as set by the Election Commission (EC), until 11.59pm, July 10, before polling day. A Bernama survey at several nomination centres found that loyal supporters had been accompanying their respective party candidates to the nomination locations since early this morning. The atmosphere around the nomination centre was reported to be peaceful and controlled without any provocation, thanks to close monitoring by members of the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) with the assistance of the Malaysian Volunteers Department (RELA). The EC has set July 7 as the early voting date while July 11 as polling day. A total of 2,727,926 voters are eligible to exercise their responsibilities in this election, consisting of 2,703,175 ordinary voters, 12,041 military personnel and their spouses, and 12,710 police personnel and their spouses. -- BERNAMA

SHAH ALAM, JUNE 27 -- Five vehicles, including a food truck, were damaged after being hit by a man believed to be driving under the influence of drugs on Jalan Sepadu, Klang, near here yesterday morning. North Klang District Police Chief ACP Ramsay Embol said that in the incident at about 11.30am, a sports utility vehicle (SUV) driven by a suspect in his 30s was travelling from Rantau Panjang towards Bandar Sultan Suleiman. He said initial investigations found that the suspect's car had entered the opposite lane and hit several vehicles, including a food truck parked on the shoulder of the road. "No victims were injured and all parties have come forward to file a police report. A urine test on the SUV driver was found to be positive for drugs," he said in a statement today. He requested the cooperation of the public who have information to come to the nearest police station or contact the Investigating Officer of the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Klang North Police Station, Inspector Surihan Samsudin, via telephone number 013-2082327 . The case is being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. KUALA LUMPU, 26 june -- The Sessions Court was told today that the action of a former manager at Petronas in leaking confidential information from the oil company to Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) could affect the negotiation process between the two oil companies involved. Petronas General Manager, Syakirah Mustapa, 51, said that if information on reports relating to Petronas' operational and financial performance were leaked to competitors, they could find out Petronas' current operational and financial performance for the first quarter as well as the overall estimate for 2024.  "The information includes financial strength, operational performance, production volumes and issues, health, safety and environmental issues, oil and gas discoveries, project investments as well as company divestment issues such as Sudan.  "This information leak could affect the negotiation process between Petronas and Petros and potentially cause negotiations that are not profitable for Petronas," he said when reading his witness statement at the trial of Mohd Khairul Akmal Mohd Jasni on charges of attempting to disclose the report to Petros. The second prosecution witness said that as the individual responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of company documents, Mohd Khairul Akmal had indeed betrayed the trust given if it was proven that he leaked or attempted to leak the report to a third party. "No permission was ever given to him (Mohd Khairul Akmal) to use the report for personal purposes or share it with third parties. "The third party is Datuk Janin Girie who is a former Petronas employee and currently holds the position of Chief Executive Officer of Petros while Azha Jalil is the Chief Financial Officer of Petros. I am not sure whether Mohd Khairul Akmal knows both individuals," said Syakirah during examination-in-chief by Deputy Public Prosecutor Noor Syafina Mohd Radzuan. Syakirah said the role of Mohd Khairul Akmal, who held the position of Petronas Business Unit Performance Manager for 22 months, was to manage the preparation of financial performance reports for upstream businesses on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis. The process of preparing the report, he said, involved two main groups, namely Business Performance Improvement (BPI) and Business Planning and Performance Reporting (BPPR).  "The report was controlled and initiated by BPI and given to BPPR to complete the relevant sections. The group consists of me, Mohd Khairul Akmal and seven other individuals," he said, who heads BPPR. The witness said Mohd Khairul Akmal was not allowed to share the report with any outside parties other than those involved in preparing the report, but the accused was suspected of leaking company information via Petronas emails. Apart from that, Syakirah said she had made a comparison and confirmed that the document sent by Mohd Khairul Akmal to a third party via Mohd Khairul Akmal's email was the same as the original report "Q1 2024 Upstream Business Performance – Operational and Financial". "The document was presented by me and Jasmin Nisha to the Upstream Leadership Team on May 10, 2024 without any changes to its original content," the witness explained. Meanwhile, when cross-examined by lawyer Louis Liaw Vern Xien representing Mohd Khairul Akmal, the witness said he was surprised by Mohd Khairul Akmal's actions because he had performed his duties well throughout his tenure. Mohd Khairul Akmal, 41, is charged with attempting to disclose information, namely a document titled "Q1 2024 Upstream Business Performance Operational & Financial" to Petros, which the document was obtained while carrying out his duties as Petronas Business Unit Performance Manager, at a condominium unit in Jalan Pinang, here, between 3.19 pm and 3.21 pm, June 8, 2024. The charge under Section 203A(1) of the Penal Code is read together with Section 511 of the same code which provides for a maximum fine of RM1 million or imprisonment of up to one year, while Section 511 carries a prison sentence not exceeding half of Section 203A(1), if convicted. PETALING JAYA, June 26 -- A part-time surveyor pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here today to charges of abandoning 36 cats, causing them to starve, and leading to the deaths of 41 cats in March.  Lee Reo Jin, 49, entered the plea after both charges were read out before Judge Noor Ruzilawati Mohd Nor.  For abandoning 36 live cats in conditions likely to cause them pain due to starvation at an apartment unit in Subang Jaya, the charge was framed under Subsection 29(1)(p) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 (Act 772), punishable under Subsection 29(1) of the same Act, which provides for a fine of not less than RM20,000 and not more than RM100,000, or imprisonment of up to three years, or both, upon conviction.  For the second charge, Lee, as the owner of the cats, was accused of causing the death of 41 cats at the same place and time. The charge was brought under Subsection 29(1)(r) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 (Act 772), which carries similar penalties.  Prosecuting officer from the Selangor Veterinary Services Department, Mohd Sharif Sabran, offered bail at RM20,000 for both charges with one surety, along with an additional condition that the accused’s passport be surrendered to the court.  However, Lee, who was unrepresented, appealed for a lower bail on the grounds that she had no fixed income.  The court allowed bail at RM10,000 for both charges with one surety, and the additional condition requested by the prosecution.  Noor Ruzilawati then set Aug 7 for case mention for the appointment of counsel.  It was earlier reported that a team from the Selangor Veterinary Services Department conducted a raid on an apartment unit in Subang Jaya on March 13 following complaints of a foul odour emanating from the unit.  The raid uncovered 41 cat carcasses wrapped and stored in a freezer, with some found scattered in the living room and cages.  In addition, 36 cats were found alive in cages, in an emaciated and weakened condition. -- BERNAMA

JOHOR BAHRU, June 26 -- Rain is forecast to affect seven of the 10 districts in the state tomorrow morning, potentially posing a slight “challenge” for prospective candidates and supporters on nomination day for the Johor state election.  Johor director of the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), Azlai Ta’at, said rain is expected in Johor Bahru, Muar, Batu Pahat, Kota Tinggi, Pontian, Tangkak and Kulai. However, clear weather is expected in the morning in the other three districts of Segamat, Kluang and Mersing. “Minimum temperatures across the state are expected to range between 24 and 25 degrees Celsius, while maximum temperatures will be between 31 and 34 degrees Celsius, with Segamat recording the highest at up to 34 degrees Celsius. “The public, including supporters of contesting candidates, are advised to stay alert to any changes in weather conditions,” he told Bernama here today. Thunderstorms are also expected to mark the start of the campaigning period, which will officially begin immediately after the nomination process ends tomorrow. MetMalaysia forecast thunderstorms in Johor Bahru, Segamat, Kluang, Kota Tinggi, Pontian, Mersing and Kulai in the afternoon, while Batu Pahat and Tangkak are expected to experience rain, and Muar is forecast to be hot. The nomination process is scheduled to take place from 9 am to 10 am at 56 nomination centres, before the official announcement of eligible candidates is made by returning officers. Pakatan Harapan is fielding candidates in all 56 seats, involving 20 from PKR, 19 from Amanah and 17 from DAP. Barisan Nasional is also contesting 56 seats, fielding 36 UMNO candidates, 16 MCA candidates and four MIC candidates. Perikatan Nasional has announced that PAS will contest 11 seats, Bersatu 16, the Malaysian Indian People’s Party five and Pejuang one. The Malaysian United Democratic Alliance will contest four seats, Parti Sosialis Malaysia one, while Parti Bersama Malaysia is set to make its debut by contesting 15 seats. JOHOR BAHRU, June 26 -- Several major roads near nomination centres in the state will be closed or diverted in stages to facilitate nomination day for the 16th Johor state election tomorrow. Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said the closures and diversions are to ensure safety and smooth conduct of the nomination process. He said about 19 roads have been identified so far in Johor Bahru, Kulai, Batu Pahat, Muar and Kluang that will be affected during the process. The roads include Jalan Utama Dato’ Onn and Jalan Ayer Molek in Johor Bahru, Jalan Persiaran Indahpura 6 in Kulai, Jalan Omar in Batu Pahat, Jalan Arab and Jalan Petri in Muar, and Jalan Dato’ Teoh Siew Khor and Jalan Sultan in Kluang. “However, detailed information, including closure and diversion times, will be announced from time to time through the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) official channels,” he said when contacted by Bernama. Ab Rahaman said 22 locations in 17 state constituencies have also been identified for close monitoring based on security assessments and past election experience. He said the locations are mainly nomination centres with large crowds of supporters, as well as urban areas with heavy traffic. He said a total of 4,832 police personnel will be deployed on nomination day to maintain security, manage traffic, monitor public order and enforce the law. He advised the public to plan their journeys early, comply with instructions from authorities and use alternative routes where necessary. Ab Rahaman also reminded political party supporters to act in a mature and orderly manner, comply with the law and avoid provocation or gatherings that could disrupt public order. He said cooperation from the public, party supporters and road users is appreciated to ensure the election process runs smoothly in a peaceful, harmonious and democratic atmosphere.
