ISKANDAR PUTERI, June 8 -- For mothers who are heavily pregnant or bringing young children for health check-ups, comfort when seeking treatment at health clinics is not a luxury, but a necessity. As such, the relocation of the Maternal and Child Unit of the Gelang Patah Health Clinic (KKGP) to the Southern Industrial and Logistics Clusters (SILC) here, under the Johor state government’s decanting (reorganisation) initiative, has been well received by patients, who now enjoy a more comfortable and orderly environment. S. Geetha, 33, who is three months pregnant, said one of the main challenges she previously faced when seeking treatment at the old location in Taman Nusa Perintis was the difficulty in finding parking due to the high volume of patients. The housewife, who is expecting her second child, said the situation forced expectant mothers to park by the roadside before walking and crossing the road to reach the clinic. “Now it’s much easier because the parking area is larger and the location is more comfortable for patients to seek treatment,” she told Bernama. For housewife Fatanah Izzati Mohd Hamdan, 30, who gave birth to her first child last month, the most noticeable changes are the more spacious waiting area and a service layout that is more patient-friendly. She said congestion at the previous facility sometimes made movement uncomfortable, especially for pregnant women and those carrying babies. “Previously, it felt like we were bumping into each other because it was so crowded. If we needed to go to the lab, we had to walk outside, but now everything is in one building,” she said. Wong Yoke Lin, 64, also praised the state government’s initiative in ensuring better healthcare services for women and children. “This is my first time at this clinic. In my view, the initiative is good as it benefits the public as a whole,” said the mother of two. A Bernama survey found that operations at the health clinic are running smoothly, with a more conducive and comfortable interior space, and a better location in a non-traffic-congested area. Earlier, it was reported that State Health and Environment Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said the KKGP in Taman Nusa Perintis often faced congestion issues, handling about 800 patients daily within a limited space. Ling and Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi had visited the health clinic to assess the situation and proposed relocating the clinic’s Maternal and Child Unit to SILC to holistically address congestion issues and enhance service quality. The new facility, which has been operating since Dec 8 last year, offers child healthcare services, antenatal and postnatal care, as well as women’s health services. The improved facilities, larger space, conducive environment and more systematic access to services not only help reduce patient congestion but also enhance the quality of healthcare for the Gelang Patah community. -- BERNAMA

SEREMBAN, June 8 -- Police have arrested a 46-year-old woman suspected of confining a nine-year-old girl in a storeroom behind a house in Taman Tuanku Jaafar here yesterday. Seremban district police chief ACP Mohd Yatim Osman said a report was received at 7.22 pm on June 7 regarding a young girl who was allegedly locked in an unlocked storeroom. He said initial investigations found that the victim had been the family's adopted child since she was one year and eight months old. "During the recent school holidays, the victim was placed in an unlocked storeroom behind the house and was given food twice a day. "The victim was only allowed into the house to use the toilet before being instructed to return to the storeroom afterwards," he said in a statement here today. Mohd Yatim said investigations also revealed that the victim was frequently scolded and beaten by the suspect, her adoptive mother, over minor matters, including stealing food at night. He said the victim was rescued and taken to Hospital Tuanku Ja'afar Seremban for further treatment. The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, and an application will be made to remand the suspect at the Seremban Magistrate's Court today to assist in investigations. KOTA KINABALU, June 8 -- A powerful magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck Mindanao in the southern Philippines early Monday morning, prompting tsunami warnings for several coastal districts in Sabah. According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), the earthquake occurred at 7:37 a.m. local time at a depth of 50 kilometres. The epicentre was located at latitude 5.7° North and longitude 125.1° East. The strong tremor was reportedly felt in several parts of Sabah, particularly in the east coast districts of Tawau and Semporna. MetMalaysia's analysis indicates that tsunami waves of up to 0.4 metres may affect the coastal areas of Tawau, Semporna, Kunak and Lahad Datu. The potential impact period is expected between 10:30 a.m. and 12:00 noon today. As a precautionary measure, tsunami warning sirens have been activated in all four affected districts, while authorities continue to monitor developments closely. Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup urged residents in the affected areas to remain calm and strictly follow instructions issued by local authorities. "I strongly urge all residents in the affected areas to give their full cooperation and immediately comply with all evacuation or safety directives issued by local authorities to prevent any untoward incidents," he said in a statement. PASIR PUTEH: The victims who survived the tragic bus crash involving students from the Sultan Idris University of Education (UPSI) in Gerik, Perak on June 9 last year are recovering from the trauma thanks to the continuous support from various parties. UPSI Bachelor of Arts Education student Abdul Wafiy Kamaruddin, 24, said the ongoing counselling provided by the university has greatly helped the victims involved in the tragedy. "At first, I felt scared when I wanted to get on a vehicle, but Alhamdulillah, things are gradually improving and now I have no problem getting on buses or public transport." "UPSI counselling also always follows up with those of us involved in the accident and the assistance has greatly helped the emotional recovery process," he told reporters after the UPSI Tautan Kasih and Ukhuwah Ceremony with the Heirs of the Gerik Incident 2025 in Tok Bali here yesterday. Abdul Wafiy said he, who only suffered minor injuries and was placed in the Green Zone of Gerik Hospital after the incident, still remembers the initial moments after the accident, including seeing many victims lying face down. "I was sitting in the back seat on the right. When I regained consciousness after the accident, I saw many people injured and wanted to help them, but my condition did not allow it. KUALA TERENGGANU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detected irregularities involving the government initiative, the Daya Kerjaya 2.0 programme, which was implemented previously, with a value of false claims totalling RM9.01 million. MACC Chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman said that through investigations, his office identified 143 companies involving 320 employees nationwide involved in the embezzlement of government funds handled by the Social Security Organisation (SOCSO) starting in 2024. "Through the Daya Kerjaya 2.0 program, the government provides incentives to employers in the form of salary payments of RM1,500 per month to employees (groups such as the disabled, ex-convicts and senior citizens) who are appointed, for six months. "However, based on the initial intelligence conducted by our party, it was found that several issues had been detected in terms of implementation and so on. Among them, we found that there was an individual who was declared as an employee but in fact he did not exist," he told Bernama in conjunction with his visit to the Terengganu MACC Office, here, today. Abd Halim said his department also detected that there were workers who did not meet the minimum six-month employment requirement but received full payment and that there was activity of using false documents to obtain the incentive payment. Apart from that, he said, his party has also detected 1,638 other companies that carried out similar activities involving a value of approximately RM45 million, but it is still in the early stages of investigation. He said that MACC had received good cooperation from Socso headquarters throughout the investigation and would continue to seek assistance from the agency at the state level to further streamline operations, including the process of collecting information and evidence. Abd Halim said his party views seriously any elements of corruption or weaknesses in the management of government funds initiated to help the people. In this regard, he said, MACC, through the Governance Investigation Division, will intensify efforts to assist government departments or agencies as well as companies to improve governance or tighten procedures to prevent leakage or misappropriation of government funds. "If there are weaknesses in the system or procedure, we will help identify and suggest improvements to ensure that the implementation of an initiative can be delivered to the people more effectively and accurately. "The case related to Daya Kerjaya 2.0 is among the examples of irregularities detected involving government incentives that were created with good intentions to help the people and stimulate job opportunities, but were misused by a few irresponsible parties," he said. In another development, Abd Halim said MACC intends to establish Anti-Corruption Cadets at the secondary school level to foster awareness and instill a culture of integrity and hatred of corruption among the younger generation. To begin with, he said, his party plans to start the project in one or two schools around Putrajaya or Kuala Lumpur with the involvement of between 30 and 40 students. "We will of course discuss our wishes with the Malaysian Ministry of Education first. MELAKA: The Ministry of Health (MOH) is planning the development of several health infrastructures in Melaka under the Second Rolling Plan (RP2) of the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK) worth RM1.8 billion. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said among the infrastructure developments was a Type 2 Specialist Hospital covering an area of ​​24.2 hectares at an estimated cost of RM875 million in Ayer Keroh, here. "The hospital will provide 400 beds and focus on Cardiology, Cardiothoracic, Neurosurgery and Ambulatory Care Centre (ACC) services. "In addition, (another development) is to expedite the construction of the Women and Children's Block (WCC) of the Melaka Hospital with a capacity of 476 beds at a cost of RM697 million which is currently in the tender process to resolve the capacity issue at the hospital," he said when met by reporters after a working visit to the Melaka Hospital, here, today. He said the project also includes the construction of a new Jasin District Health Office. Apart from that, he said, the Ministry of Health will apply for approval of the Preliminary Work Details under RP2 of the 13th RMK for the Bukit Katil Health Clinic (Type 2) and the project, estimated to cost RM50 million, will become a fully-equipped Health Referral Centre to accommodate a population density of more than 80,243 by 2030. "MOH will also apply for approval of the Preliminary Work Details under RP2 RMK13 for the Duyong Health Clinic (Type 2) with a project estimated to cost RM50 million, aimed at accommodating operations at the Ujong Pasir Health Clinic which is currently facing critical space constraints. "This effort shows the Unity Government's full commitment in ensuring that the health ecosystem in Melaka remains competitive," he said. Meanwhile, he said, he also approved a special allocation of RM6 million aimed at resolving issues of facility repairs and upgrades as well as urgent needs for medical and non-medical assets at the six facilities he visited. The six health facilities are Durian Tunggal Health Clinic, Jasin Health Clinic, Jasin Hospital, Bukit Katil Rural Clinic, Melaka Hospital and Alor Gajah Hospital.
