TASEK GELUGOR: The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) is actively strengthening long-term efforts to reduce the country's dependence on basic food following global geopolitical uncertainties which could affect the country's costs and supply chain. Its Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said his party is targeting 30 percent of the country's corn grain needs to be produced locally by 2030, including through the development of more than 2,000 hectares of crops in Perlis which will be launched this month. He said the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development was also expanding onion planting on a large scale involving the Farmers' Organisation Board (LPP) and related agencies, with the target of covering 30 percent of the local onion supply within the next four years. Malaysia currently, he said, depends almost 100 percent on corn and soy imports, which are among the main factors influencing the price of chicken and eggs if there is a price increase in the international market. "Animal feed such as corn and soy still depends heavily on imports. When world prices rise, the costs of our farmers also rise. When oil rises, the costs of fishermen going out to sea also rise. When fertilizer rises, the costs of farmers also rise. "Although the cause is beyond our control, the government cannot let up. The government must work, be prepared and ensure that the food supply is sufficient," he told reporters after the opening ceremony of the MADANI Adoption Village and MADANI Adoption School in Kampung Guar Petai, here, today. Mohamad said that so far the prices of basic foods including chicken, eggs and rice are still under control, but the government will continue to monitor the situation including the possibility of price manipulation if import costs increase. In terms of the country's main food supply, he said it was still stable with the country's rice buffer stock at around 300,000 tonnes while the supply of chicken and eggs was also at a good self-sufficiency level. Meanwhile, commenting on the claims of rice farmers regarding the increase in the cost of planting rice, Mohamad said the ministry always takes into account the views of the group, including regarding the cost of ploughing and agricultural inputs. He said the government had previously approved assistance of RM200 for initial ploughing work to help reduce the burden on rice farmers.

JOHOR BAHRU, May 8 – Holders of existing MyKad nationwide are not required to replace their identity cards when the new version is introduced on June 1, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said. He said while possessing a MyKad is mandatory for Malaysians aged 12 and above, there is no requirement for cardholders to replace their MyKad simultaneously. More than 20 million Malaysians currently hold the identification card. “I urge the public not to rush to the National Registration Department (JPN) to change their MyKad. “The law does not require holders of the existing MyKad to immediately replace their cards once the new version is introduced,” he told a press conference after inspecting the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link project at the Sultan Iskandar Building Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex and Bukit Chagar Station here today. Also present was Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) director-general Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain. Saifuddin Nasution said this when asked whether the replacement of existing MyKad with the new version featuring enhanced security elements would be made compulsory for all Malaysians. Earlier, JPN director-general Datuk Badrul Hisham Alias reportedly said the new MyKad would feature 53 security elements compared with 23 on the current card. The enhanced features include laser engraving, ultraviolet elements, holograms, guilloche patterns, microtext, a Quick Response (QR) code for enforcement purposes and a chip with upgraded encryption. Besides MyKad, new versions of MyPoCA and MyTentera will also be introduced next month.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reaffirmed Malaysia’s strong commitment to strengthening ASEAN unity in addressing increasingly complex global challenges, particularly geopolitical crises that have directly impacted energy security, food security, and the stability of regional supply chains. Speaking at the 48th ASEAN Summit today, he stressed that no country could confront the ongoing global uncertainties alone, underscoring the need to further reinforce collective cooperation and regional solidarity within ASEAN. Anwar said Malaysia also expressed support for accelerating the ASEAN Power Grid initiative, strengthening regional petroleum security mechanisms, and expanding strategic cooperation networks, including through ASEAN-GCC-China collaboration, to ensure long-term energy resilience. On food security, he said ASEAN must take more decisive action through the coordination of emergency food stockpiles and the strengthening of the ASEAN Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve (APTERR) mechanism to shield the region from food inflation and supply disruptions. He also emphasised that the safety of ASEAN citizens in conflict areas must remain a shared priority among member states. SHAH ALAM, May 8 -- Police busted two international drug trafficking syndicates after seizing drugs worth RM12.6 million at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and a house in Kota Warisan, Sepang, at the end of last month. Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said seven foreigners comprising six men and one woman aged between 18 and 27 were arrested in the operation, carried out by police and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad auxiliary police. Shazeli said police got their break on April 28 when they arrested four suspects, including a woman, after detecting four suspicious bags passing through a scanner machine at the KLIA terminal. “Inspection found 64 plastic packets containing compressed slabs believed to be ganja flowers weighing 67.2 kilogrammes (kg), with the seizure estimated to be worth RM5.4 million. Police also seized RM580 in cash, 20 euros (RM91.98) in foreign currency and an Audemars Piguet watch worth about RM80,000,” he told a press conference at the Selangor police contingent headquarters today. For the second syndicate, police arrested a 20-year-old man after detecting two suspicious bags passing through a baggage scanner at KLIA Terminal One. He said further checks uncovered 59 plastic packets containing compressed ganja flowers weighing 29.5 kg, with the seizure estimated to be worth RM2.4 million. “Following intelligence gathered from the second arrest, police then raided a residential unit in Kota Warisan, where they arrested two more men aged 19 and 25 and found four bags containing 109 plastic packets filled with compressed ganja flowers weighing 60 kg. The seizure was estimated to be worth RM4.8 million,” he said. Shazeli said the three raids resulted in the seizure of 156.7 kg of ganja flowers worth RM12.6 million. The cases are being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and all suspects have been remanded for between seven and 14 days. He said preliminary investigations found that none of the suspects had criminal records in Malaysia and they were believed to have used social visit passes to carry out drug trafficking activities in the country. He said some suspects are also believed to have acted as drug mules based on the payments received, amounting to between 3,000 euros and 5,000 euros (RM13,796 to RM22,994) and 5,000 British pounds (RM26,546) for a single trip. On another matter, Shazeli said the investigation paper on the case involving defiance of Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah’s decree relating to the conduct of Friday prayers and the azan at a surau in Ampang has been completed and submitted to the Selangor Prosecution Office for further instructions. Previously, the media reported that police had placed a local man suspected of being involved in the azan petition issue in Ampang on a special circular list to prevent him from fleeing abroad.

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 16 -- Police have arrested another individual to assist in investigations into the murder of a man at a hotel in Sunway Mentari, Petaling Jaya on July 8. Petaling Jaya District Police Chief, ACP Shamsudin Mamat said the man, in his 40s, was arrested last Monday and remanded for four days until tomorrow to assist in the investigation. He said the remand period of two men in their 20s and 30s who were previously detained expired today, and would be extended to assist with investigations. "The investigation papers regarding this case will be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor this week," he said in a statement today.
