KUALA LUMPUR, April 17 -- The Malaysian Media Clubs Association (GKMM) has called on the government to grant a special exemption allowing registered media practitioners to continue receiving the previous 300-litre monthly quota of RON95 petrol. In a statement today, GKMM said the recent adjustment under the BUDI MADANI RON95 (BUDI95) programme, which reduced the individual quota from 300 litres to 200 litres per month, is posing significant challenges for journalists, photographers and videographers carrying out field assignments. “GKMM has received numerous complaints, particularly from practitioners based in the states, who are required to travel long distances and commute daily to coverage locations. This has caused their 200-litre quota to be depleted well before the end of each month,” the statement said. It added that restoring the higher quota would help ensure smoother field operations while easing the financial burden faced by media personnel amid rising living costs. Effective April 1, the monthly BUDI95 quota was adjusted to 200 litres from 300 litres, following ongoing tensions in West Asia, although the subsidised RON95 price remains at RM1.99 per litre. -- BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia and Turkey are expected to strengthen cooperation in the media and communications sectors, including through a proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and content exchange initiatives. The matter was discussed during a courtesy call by Turkish Ambassador to Malaysia Emir Salim Yuksel to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil here yesterday. Through a post on Facebook, the Ministry of Communications announced that both parties had exchanged views on key areas of cooperation, including aspects of online security as well as cooperation in the broadcasting and media sectors. According to the Ministry of Communications, the discussion also examines the opportunity to strengthen cooperation through the finalization of an MoU related to public relations and communications. The meeting reflected the close and long-standing bilateral relationship between Malaysia and Turkey, with further discussions covering aspects of online security, broadcasting and content exchange initiatives involving Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM). Also present were Deputy Secretary-General (Strategic Communications and Creative Industries) Nik Kamaruzaman Nik Husin and Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysian National News Agency Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin. Meanwhile, in a separate post, the Ministry of Communications announced that Fahmi also received a courtesy visit from the Spanish Ambassador to Malaysia, José Luis Pardo Cuerdo. According to the ministry, the meeting, which was also attended by Abdul Halim and Nur-ul Afida, opened a space to exchange views on current developments, including the situation in the Middle East, in addition to strengthening bilateral relations in the communications and media sectors. "The discussion also focused on online safety, with Spain sharing new legal developments to protect children in the digital space." "Malaysia also shared on the implementation of eKYC (digital user identity verification) as well as proposed restrictions on the use of social media for users under 16 years of age," said the ministry. The Ministry of Communications informed that both parties are also exploring potential media cooperation, including collaboration between Bernama and Agencia EFE in the exchange of news and content.

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 16 -- Police have arrested another individual to assist in investigations into the murder of a man at a hotel in Sunway Mentari, Petaling Jaya on July 8. Petaling Jaya District Police Chief, ACP Shamsudin Mamat said the man, in his 40s, was arrested last Monday and remanded for four days until tomorrow to assist in the investigation. He said the remand period of two men in their 20s and 30s who were previously detained expired today, and would be extended to assist with investigations. "The investigation papers regarding this case will be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor this week," he said in a statement today. Previously, the media reported that a man in his 30s was found unconscious in a hotel before being reported dead at 11.23pm. Initial examination found signs of injury on the victim's body, and the results of the autopsy at the University Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM) confirmed the cause of death was severe injuries due to the impact of a blunt object. -- BERNAMA
