KUALA LUMPUR, May 12 -- The Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) International Bureau looks forward to constructive engagement and closer people-to-people ties with Tamil Nadu following the appointment of film star-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay as its new chief minister. Its chairman, Dr Maszlee Malik, said the bureau aims to strengthen cooperation, particularly in the fields of education, youth empowerment, technology, culture and regional cooperation. “Malaysia and Tamil Nadu share longstanding historical and cultural bonds, especially through the vibrant Malaysian Indian community, whose roots and heritage remain closely connected to Tamil civilisation and identity,” he said in a statement today. Maszlee also congratulated Vijay on his appointment, noting that the victory reflects the democratic aspirations of the people of Tamil Nadu and signals a new chapter of leadership grounded in hope, reform, and the empowerment of ordinary citizens. He further noted that the bureau recognises the deep political consciousness and rich civilisational heritage of the Indian state, citing its contributions to social justice and economic development as an inspiration to the wider region. “We believe that the strengthening of democratic institutions, inclusive governance, and people-centred policies remains essential in navigating the challenges of our time,” he said. Maszlee also extended his well-wishes to the new Chief Minister, wishing him wisdom and success in serving the people of Tamil Nadu with justice and compassion. Vijay, 51, was sworn in as Tamil Nadu’s new chief minister on Sunday after garnering enough support from other parties to command a legislative majority. His Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party won 108 seats in April's assembly election, falling short of the 118 needed for a majority of its own in the 234-member chamber.

PUTRAJAYA, May 11 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today stressed that science, technology and innovation (STI) must become the main driver of Malaysia’s economic transformation in facing growing global financial uncertainties and geopolitical challenges, including the post-conflict energy crisis in West Asia. Anwar said every aspect of planning and implementation related to STI development must be mobilised in a more strategic and effective manner to ensure the country remains resilient amid an increasingly fragile global economic chain. He said the MADANI Government remains fully committed to strengthening the national STI ecosystem through several mission-based initiatives aimed at optimising resources, stimulating sustainable economic growth and accelerating the development of high-value technologies and innovations. According to the Prime Minister, the approach is crucial in reinforcing strategic synergy between the government, private sector and research and development (R&D) institutions to ensure research outcomes can be translated into tangible benefits for the people and the nation. “Science, technology and innovation must not remain within laboratories or policy documents alone, but must be transformed into practical solutions that strengthen the economy, create quality jobs and improve the people’s well-being,” he said. Anwar said this while chairing the National Science Council (MSN) Meeting No. 1 for 2026 today. He added that stronger collaboration between all stakeholders would also position Malaysia as a competitive regional hub for innovation and advanced technology development in the years ahead. -- MINUTESMY -- SOURCE: FB ANWAR IBRAHIM

KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 — Minister of Human Resources R. Ramanan has described the increase in allocation for the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (MITRA) to RM150 million as a historic milestone and clear proof of the MADANI Government’s commitment towards empowering the Indian community in the country. Ramanan said the announcement was made by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim during the Friendly Ceremony with Indian Students held at the University of Malaya today. According to him, the event itself marked another significant moment as it was the first time since the establishment of MITRA, formerly known as the Socio-Economic Development of the Indian Community Unit (SEDIC), that a sitting Prime Minister attended a programme organised by the agency. “The reception was extraordinary with nearly 3,000 members of the Indian community and students attending the programme. This clearly reflects the strong support and confidence towards the MADANI Government,” he said. Ramanan added that the increase in MITRA’s allocation from previous years to RM150 million beginning this year would greatly benefit the Indian community, particularly in the areas of education, socio-economic development and community empowerment. He also expressed appreciation to Anwar for his continued commitment in ensuring the welfare and progress of the Indian community in Malaysia. During the ceremony, the Prime Minister also handed over device assistance benefiting 3,000 Indian students nationwide. In addition, assistance cheques for Higher Education Institution (IPT) Admission Aid for 2025 were presented to 4,165 students from accredited centres, public universities (IPTA) and private higher education institutions (IPTS), involving a total allocation of RM8.347 million. Ramanan stressed that the various initiatives and assistance announced under the MADANI Government clearly demonstrate that the administration is committed to delivering tangible aid and development opportunities to the Indian community. He said allegations claiming the MADANI Government has sidelined the Indian community are baseless, as continuous support, educational assistance and economic opportunities are being provided to ensure no group is left behind in the nation’s development agenda. -- MINUTESMY -- SOURCE: FB RAMANAN RAMAKRISHNAN
