KLUANG, 12 MAY -- Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin will meet his Norwegian counterpart in Singapore later this month to seek clarification regarding the country's surprise decision to block the export licence of anti-ship missiles (NSM) to Malaysia. He said the meeting would also be used to express the Malaysian government's regret and surprise at Norway's action in cancelling the delivery of the assets, just a few days before the scheduled date last March. "It is very unfortunate that we have signed a contract to purchase missiles from Norway since 2018. The missiles were supposed to be delivered last March to equip our littoral combat ships (LCS) as well as KD Lekiu and KD Jebat. "... but a few days before the delivery date, without any 'storms and hurricanes', the Norwegian government told us they would not grant a license to market the product after eight years of our purchase. PUTRAJAYA, 12 MAY -- Malaysia's labour market remained stable in March 2026 with the unemployment rate unchanged at 2.9 percent, supported by continued employment growth and labour force participation, according to the Malaysian Labour Force Statistics, March and First Quarter 2026 released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM). Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the positive economic outlook throughout the month allowed the country's labour market to maintain stable growth momentum. "The labour force increased by 0.1 percent to 17.31 million people in March 2026 compared to 17.30 million people in February, while the labour force participation rate (LPFR) remained at 70.9 percent," he said in a statement today. Mohd Uzir said the number of employed people also increased by 0.1 percent to 16.80 million people, compared to 16.79 million recorded in the previous month. At the same time, he said the number of unemployed recorded a slight increase of 0.4 percent to 509,000 people compared to 506,800 people in February, thus leaving the unemployment rate unchanged at 2.9 percent. The Chief Statistician said the workers category comprised the largest share of total employment at 75 percent, with a slight increase to 12.60 million people in March compared to 12.59 million previously. "At the same time, the number of self-employed also recorded an increase of 0.3 percent to 3.14 million people compared to 3.13 million in February," he said. KOTA TINGGI, JUNE 21 -- The Malaysian Army (TDM) has temporarily suspended all training involving the use of hand grenades following an explosion that killed two of its members during a training session at Hobart Camp, Kedah, recently. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the suspension order was effective immediately until the investigation board completed a thorough investigation into the exact cause of the incident. He said the move was important to enable a reassessment of the standard operating procedures (SOP) for handling weapons and managing the security forces' training. "As a result of the incident, the Army has issued an order to suspend all training involving the use of grenades until the investigation is complete. We want to know why this situation could have happened. "What went wrong there, that is what needs to be investigated. According to technical guidelines, when the pin is pulled out, it must be thrown away within seven seconds," he told reporters after attending a free fuel filling programme at BHPetrol Felda Air Tawar 2, here, today. Mohamed Khaled said he refused to make any initial speculation regarding the cause of the incident and chose to leave it entirely to the investigation process. He said the scope of the investigation would include various aspects including technical evaluation of the weapons as well as the emotional state and readiness of the members during the training. "I don't want to make any assumptions, let's investigate first. When the report is complete, we will see where the weaknesses are to be improved, including looking at the condition of the members involved during the training. "I have requested that this investigation be expedited and that the full report be submitted directly to me as soon as it is completed," he said. SEREMBAN, JUNE 21 -- Police arrested 10 men, including four drunk drivers and one who tested positive for drugs, in an Integrated Operation, Ops Samseng and Ops Samseng Jalanan, which was carried out in several locations around the district early this morning. Seremban District Police Chief ACP Mohd Yatim Osman said the operation carried out by the Seremban IPD Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division (BSPT) from 5pm yesterday to 4am this morning also resulted in the arrest of five individuals believed to be involved in street gang activities. He said 115 individuals and 105 vehicles were checked during the operation at four main locations, namely Jalan Sungai Ujong, Jalan Lingkaran Tengah, Jalan Bukit Kepayang and Jalan Rasah, involving three officers and 24 police personnel. "During the operation, we arrested four men who were driving under the influence of alcohol, one who tested positive for THC and five men believed to be involved in street gangs, all aged between 19 and 30. "As a result of this operation, 78 summonses were issued for various traffic offences, with the highest offence involving no driving licence in 20 cases, followed by expired motor vehicle licences in 15 cases and no insurance cover in eight cases," he said in a statement today. Mohd Yatim said that for Ops Samseng Jalanan, they will be investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous riding. Four drivers who were arrested for drunk driving are being investigated under Section 45A(1) of the same act after being found to have driven above the permitted alcohol limit, in addition to opening an investigation paper under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 against individuals who tested positive for drugs.
