KULAI, April 13 -- The increase in operating costs, especially diesel fuel, due to the current global energy crisis is expected to cause increased delays in road construction and maintenance projects nationwide. Deputy Minister of Works Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan said his ministry expected the number of projects behind schedule to increase compared to before. He said that of the 855 projects in implementation under the Public Works Department (JKR) involving 28 ministries previously, one-third were ahead of schedule, one-third were on schedule and one-third were late. Ahmad explained that road construction and maintenance projects were the most affected sector due to their high dependence on the use of diesel to power heavy machinery such as lorries and road rollers. "Because all the vehicles that make roads use diesel... so this industry is indeed following market prices and that is their main complaint. "What is affected is road maintenance and the construction of new roads, while for building construction, they can still use up existing building materials. However, with the current situation, we are worried that this category of late projects will increase," he said. He said this to reporters during an official working visit to the Kulai District Public Works Department at the Kulai District Engineer's Office, here, today. Ahmad said the industry estimated the cost increase to be between 30 and 40 percent, but the government did not want to rely on that figure without more accurate data confirmation. Therefore, he said, the Works Ministry is currently obtaining official data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) to determine the actual rate of increase in the price of building materials. "DOSM has a scientific and systematic calculation method covering various sectors including building materials, food and transportation. We will use their data as an official reference," he said. In addition, he said his party had also held meetings with several contractor associations including the Malaysian Bumiputera Contractors Association (PKBM), the Malaysian Malay Contractors Association (PKMM), the Malaysian Class F Bumiputera Contractors Association (Perkobf) and the mechanical contractors association to obtain industry feedback.

PUTRAJAYA: A total of 10,000 traders under the supervision of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) have received a 50 percent reduction in site rental rates for two years, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh. He said DBKL and Labuan Corporation were among the earliest local authorities (LAUs) to announce initiatives aimed at easing the burden of the cost of living for traders, especially following the increase in oil prices. "We have a long list for (recipients under) DBKL, which is 10,000 at all sites, including food courts and markets," he said after officiating the Putrajaya Aktif Programme here today. The reduction in rental rates for hawker sites and certain premises under the supervision of DBKL is effective from April 1 to December 31, 2027. Hannah said Putrajaya Corporation is currently still examining the best approach before implementing similar measures, including evaluating additional forms of assistance other than rental discounts. He, however, said that for now the government is prioritizing reducing rental rates over other forms of subsidies, taking into account financial constraints and the need to generate alternative revenue. "When we reduce rent, we need to find other sources of revenue because we are also facing increased operating costs including rising oil prices," he said. Hannah, when commenting on today's program, said the government had also launched free sports classes involving sepak takraw and rope jumping in Putrajaya as a specific measure to address obesity among children. He said the program was chosen because it was low cost and easy for children to practice at home. "This class is held twice a month, on the second and fourth week, involving 50 participants per session at four locations around Putrajaya and is held throughout the year," he said. Hannah said the initiative was implemented together with the Ministry of Health, with a focus on providing programmes and fostering an interest in sports, while the nutrition and health aspects were monitored by the ministry. He said the government also plans to obtain data on obese children in Putrajaya through collaboration with the Ministry of Education to expand the program's reach to target groups before expanding it to other areas including Kuala Lumpur.

ALOR SETAR: The Border Protection Agency (AKPS) refused entry to 28 foreign nationals at the Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security Complex (ICQS) between April 1 and 11. Bukit Kayu Hitam AKPS commander SAC Fauzi Mohd Yusof said that of the total, 14 individuals were Indian citizens, consisting of 13 men and one woman. He said all the individuals aged 20 to 40 were refused entry into the country after failing to meet the requirements as tourists, including not having a return ticket and being unable to provide a clear purpose of travel to Immigration officers. "In addition, there are also those among them who are listed on the department's suspect list and are not allowed to enter Malaysia," he said in a statement today. He said five Thai citizens were also refused entry after being found to be using damaged passports and did not meet the country's entry requirements. In addition, Fauzi said two Bangladeshi men were refused entry because they were not allowed to use the land entrance in accordance with the department's current instructions. He said the rest involved citizens of Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Indonesia who were refused entry due to various non-compliance with entry requirements and all of them were directed to return to their last country of departure. Fauzi further said that his party would continue to tighten controls at the country's entry points to ensure that only visitors who meet the requirements are allowed to enter. "Strict action will continue to be taken against any individual who attempts to abuse the country's Immigration facilities," he said.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 11 -- A total of RM30,000 has been contributed to Persatuan Veteran Radio Televisyen Malaysia (PVRTM) to support the association’s activities and the welfare of its members. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the contribution was a gesture of appreciation for the services and dedication of RTM veterans who have significantly shaped the nation’s broadcasting history. “I very much welcome and support the efforts of our colleagues in PVRTM, who are seen to be increasingly active. I still remember that in the early days, the PVRTM office was located under a staircase, but now we have expanded and improved those facilities. “They now have a more comfortable space, and I will continue to provide support, including financially, almost every year,” he told reporters after attending the PVRTM Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration at a hotel here today. PETALING JAYA -- Malaysia’s Premier Songkran Festival 2026 offers a platform to strengthen long-standing people-to-people and cultural ties between Malaysia and Thailand as both countries mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027. Thailand’s Ambassador to Malaysia Lada Phumas said the 11-day festival, held from April 9 to 19, also serves as a vibrant showcase of Thailand’s tourism and creative economy, reflecting its broader push to position itself as a key strategic player on the global stage. “While we are bringing the spirit of Songkran and authentic Thai offerings to Malaysia, I would also like to invite our Malaysian and international friends to experience Songkran traditions in Thailand. “Let us use this festival to strengthen the people-to-people and cultural ties that have bound us for decades, as we join hands on our journey towards the 70th anniversary of Thailand-Malaysia diplomatic relations next year,” she said at the official launch of the festival on Friday. KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 16 -- Police have arrested another individual to assist in investigations into the murder of a man at a hotel in Sunway Mentari, Petaling Jaya on July 8. Petaling Jaya District Police Chief, ACP Shamsudin Mamat said the man, in his 40s, was arrested last Monday and remanded for four days until tomorrow to assist in the investigation. He said the remand period of two men in their 20s and 30s who were previously detained expired today, and would be extended to assist with investigations. "The investigation papers regarding this case will be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor this week," he said in a statement today. Previously, the media reported that a man in his 30s was found unconscious in a hotel before being reported dead at 11.23pm.
