YB Steven Sim Chee Keong has highlighted the inspiring journey of local entrepreneur Saleha, whose humble nasi lemak business has grown from a roadside setup into a successful enterprise yesterday. Sharing the story, Steven Sim said Saleha began her business modestly, operating under an umbrella by the roadside, preparing and packaging nasi lemak on her own from home. Despite facing challenges, including occasional enforcement disruptions, her food quickly gained popularity among customers. Encouraged by strong demand, Saleha took a RM3,000 loan from Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia (AIM) to expand her operations. That initial step marked the beginning of a steady growth trajectory. After 15 years of perseverance, her business—now widely known as Nasi Lemak Saleha—has transformed significantly. What started as selling around 100 packets a day has grown into a large-scale operation producing up to 15,000 packets daily. The business now includes a restaurant, a central kitchen, and employs dozens of workers. YB Steven Sim noted that Saleha’s success reflects the impact of continuous support from government-linked agencies, including SME Corp Malaysia and TEKUN Nasional. He added that Saleha was also recognised with the E50 Award by SME Corp, further cementing her status as a successful entrepreneur under initiatives linked to KUSKOP. He also highlighted the involvement of Saleha’s son, Dr. Rizal, a medical doctor who underwent training with the National Institute of Entrepreneurship (INSKEN) and now serves as Chief Operating Officer of the business. Today, Saleha is not only a successful entrepreneur but also a mentor figure—affectionately known as “Sis Long”—to other AIM entrepreneurs, inspiring many to pursue their own business ambitions. KUALA LUMPUR, April 6 -- Veteran broadcast journalist Datuk Karam Singh Walia died at his residence in Klang at 3.30 am today. He was 67. His passing was confirmed by his younger brother, Jasbant Singh, who is also Group Managing Editor (GME) of News and Current Affairs at Media Prima Berhad. Born in 1959 in Teluk Intan, Perak, Karam began his career as a broadcast journalist with TV3 in 1995 before retiring in 2014 due to health reasons. He was widely regarded as one of the country’s most influential environmental journalists, having won the Seri Angkasa Award twice as well as the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) Award for Best Environmental Television Journalist for four consecutive years from 2004 to 2007. Karam was also a recipient of the Tabung Kasih @HAWANA in June 2024. Assistant Editor of News and Current Affairs at TV3, Juliana Sharin, said Karam’s passing would be deeply felt among colleagues, describing him as a figure who greatly inspired the field of journalism. “When I had the opportunity to work as part of the ‘Aduan Rakyat’ team, it was a source of pride and a valuable chance to learn from him. His voice was firm in upholding the truth. Today, that voice is no more. “Karam Singh Walia was not just a journalist. He was the voice of the people and the environment, as he did not merely report the news, but changed the way we see the world. His passing is deeply felt, but his legacy lives on,” she told Bernama when contacted. Meanwhile, TV3 news presenter Nur Jamalina Mohamad Jamali said although she had not worked closely with him, she was well aware of Karam’s approach and contributions throughout his career. She said he was known for his consistent environmental reporting, focusing on issues such as river pollution, illegal dumping and deforestation. “He was also known for his firm and principled reporting style, bringing attention to issues of public interest with clarity and confidence, without fear,” she said. She added that Karam maintained a strong presence on the ground, often reporting live from affected locations, which enhanced the depth and credibility of his reports. “His distinctive delivery style made his reports easily recognisable to viewers, including his trademark practice of ending reports with ‘pantun’ or concise, impactful remarks. “Karam Singh’s contributions helped raise public awareness on environmental issues, and his legacy continues to be felt within the country’s journalism community,” she said. -- BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR, 6 April 2026 – Malaysia’s Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil officiated the presentation of appointment letters for the NADI Advisory Panel (PPN) for the state of Johor yesterday, marking a key step in strengthening grassroots community initiatives. The ceremony was held in Johor Bahru and attended by Zaliha Mustafa, Member of Parliament for Sekijang, who accompanied the minister during the event. YB Datuk Fahmi said the establishment of the NADI Advisory Panel serves as a support body at the parliamentary cluster level, aimed at enhancing programme implementation and reinforcing the role of the National Information Dissemination Centres (NADI) as hubs for community empowerment. For Johor, a total of 26 chairpersons have been appointed to lead the advisory panels across the respective parliamentary constituencies. Nationwide, there are currently 1,099 NADI centres in operation, with 101 located in Johor alone. He noted that the appointments are expected to broaden the involvement of local leaders and communities, improve coordination of programmes, and ensure that NADI initiatives are more impactful and aligned with the needs of local communities. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia — YB Fahmi Fadzil witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and the Securities Commission Malaysia to enhance joint efforts in tackling online fraud and illegal investment schemes. The MoU was signed by MCMC Chairman Mohamad Salim Fateh Din and SC Chairman Mohammad Faiz Azmi, and witnessed by Fahmi alongside Deputy Finance Minister Liew Chin Tong. YB Fahmi said the collaboration marks a significant step in strengthening enforcement capabilities through closer intelligence sharing and the use of advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), to more effectively detect and remove fraudulent content online. He noted that between 2024 and 2025, the Securities Commission, with the support of MCMC, successfully blocked 328 websites, 388 Telegram accounts, and 60 phone numbers linked to scams. “This joint effort reflects our commitment to act swiftly and decisively against increasingly sophisticated scam tactics that threaten public trust and financial security,” he said. The initiative will also be reinforced through the expanded role of the National Scam Response Centre, alongside intensified public awareness programmes aimed at educating Malaysians on identifying and avoiding online fraud. Fahmi added that the government remains dedicated to safeguarding the digital ecosystem and ensuring stronger protection for the public against financial scams.

KUALA LUMPUR — Anwar Ibrahim has emphasized the need for caution in adjusting national policy implementation, particularly in addressing the economic impact of ongoing conflicts in the Gulf and West Asia. Speaking at the District Development Meeting in Kuantan — the sixth district he has visited — Anwar stressed that national defense and security measures have been strengthened to ensure the stability and well-being of both the government and the people. On the rising cost of living, the Prime Minister said the government is taking immediate and comprehensive steps to protect citizens from economic pressures in both the short and long term. He added that developments are being closely monitored from the outset to minimize direct impacts on the national economy. Anwar also called for stronger coordination between the Federal Government and the Pahang State Government, particularly in ensuring that small-scale projects under the Rolling Plan approved in the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13) are implemented without delay so that their benefits can be quickly felt by the public. Addressing land-related issues in project implementation, he assured that the Federal Government would provide effective solutions to assist the state in expediting approved projects and avoiding prolonged delays. During the meeting, Anwar was briefed on the progress of federal and state initiatives in Kuantan, including challenges such as rising construction material costs affecting schools, as well as drainage maintenance in flood mitigation areas and regions previously unaffected by floods. He also reviewed updates on public well-being indicators, including hardcore poverty, crime index trends, MADANI Village and School initiatives, the development of business stalls, and proposed community-focused (Cakna MADANI) projects. Highlighting the importance of grassroots economic support, Anwar stressed that priority should be given to upgrading and expanding facilities for small traders in Kuantan. He urged local authorities and the Ministry of Local Government Development (KPKT) to closely monitor the needs of stall operators to ensure they can conduct business more comfortably and increase their income, rather than focusing solely on large-scale or mega projects. In addition, he reiterated a Cabinet decision directing the Ministry of Education to expedite the preparation of additional classrooms for Year 1 students aged six and seven, ahead of the 2027 school intake, including in Kuantan. KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 16 -- Police have arrested another individual to assist in investigations into the murder of a man at a hotel in Sunway Mentari, Petaling Jaya on July 8. Petaling Jaya District Police Chief, ACP Shamsudin Mamat said the man, in his 40s, was arrested last Monday and remanded for four days until tomorrow to assist in the investigation. He said the remand period of two men in their 20s and 30s who were previously detained expired today, and would be extended to assist with investigations. "The investigation papers regarding this case will be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor this week," he said in a statement today. Previously, the media reported that a man in his 30s was found unconscious in a hotel before being reported dead at 11.23pm. Initial examination found signs of injury on the victim's body, and the results of the autopsy at the University Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM) confirmed the cause of death was severe injuries due to the impact of a blunt object. -- BERNAMA
