BUKIT KAYU HITAM -- Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) director-general, Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain, has issued a stern warning to those he described as ‘traitors’ who allow foreigners to slip into the country. He said the agency has yet to identify those involved in the matter, but has issued a strong warning to his officers not to commit such acts of betrayal. “Do not let me find out that this is happening due to acts of betrayal, as I have warned before… if it still happens, it seems I will have to come here more often to identify who the ‘traitors' are,” he told reporters, here, today. He said this when asked about public concerns over the entry of foreigners into the country through the Bukit Kayu Hitam border. Earlier, he attended the handover-of-duty ceremony for the AKPS Bukit Kayu Hitam commander, between SAC Mohd Nasaruddin M Nasir and SAC Fauzi Mohd Yusuf. Mohd Nasaruddin, from Kota Bharu, Kelantan, who served as AKPS Bukit Kayu Hitam commander from Jan 10, 2025 to March 31, 2026, will assume the post of deputy director-general (Operations) at the AKPS headquarters, while Fauzi, from Taiping, Perak, previously with Bukit Aman’s D3 division, reported for duty as the new AKPS Bukit Kayu Hitam commander, today. Meanwhile, Mohd Shuhaily said that the agency will tighten border controls to curb the smuggling of subsidised goods, following the ongoing conflict in West Asia. “We will work with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), and carry out joint enforcement on this issue,” he said.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 2 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim yesterday announced a series of decisive measures as Malaysia enters what he described as a “new and very challenging phase” escalating conflicts in West Asia that are beginning to disrupt global energy supply chains. In a statement, Anwar said the situation is no longer “business as usual,” stressing that early and firm action is necessary to ensure the country’s energy security, economic stability, and the continued protection of citizen's welfare. “To face this uncertainty, the government has acted proactively and responsibly,” he said. Among the key steps announced is the increased frequency of meetings of the National Economic Action Council (MTEN), now expanded to include representatives from key sectors such as industry, fisheries, agriculture, and other stakeholders to coordinate comprehensive response strategies. As part of immediate cost-saving measures, the Prime Minister also confirmed the cancellation of the federal-level Aidilfitri open house. On fuel management, Anwar announced a temporary adjustment of the BUDI95 quota to 200 litres per month, alongside stricter enforcement of subsidised diesel limits in Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan to prevent leakages and ensure targeted distribution. In addition, a Work From Home (BDR) policy will be implemented starting April 15 to reduce fuel consumption and ease pressure on national energy demand. Despite global pressures, Anwar emphasised that the government has successfully cushioned the citizens through the People’s Support Initiative, with spending exceeding RM4 billion to date. This has allowed Malaysians to continue enjoying the RON95 petrol price at RM1.99 per litre, while ensuring subsidies for businesses, fishermen, and eligible groups remain intact. The Prime Minister added that Malaysia is also accelerating efforts to diversify its energy sources to guarantee long-term supply resilience. At the same time, PM Anwar issued a stern warning against the spread of fake news during this critical period, describing such actions as irresponsible and detrimental to national unity. “This is not the time for narrow political interests. The nation requires unity, discipline, and a shared sense of responsibility,” he said. KUALA LUMPUR: Enforcement of restrictions on the purchase of RON95 petrol using foreign credit and debit cards at self-service petrol pump terminals will be implemented in stages nationwide starting today. The latest move is part of the government's efforts to strengthen the fuel subsidy mechanism in Malaysia following the global energy crisis. A survey in several states, especially those bordering neighboring countries, found that the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) is actively implementing enforcement and monitoring operations at petrol stations. Apart from monitoring operations, petrol station operators are also seen to be prepared and comply with regulations regarding restrictions on the sale of RON95 petrol using foreign credit and debit cards at self-service terminals. In SARAWAK , KPDN Enforcement Director-General Datuk Azman Adam also inspected the implementation of the new regulations at Tasik Biru, Bau, which is located about 25 kilometres from Kuching city. He said the cooperation given by petrol station operators, including in Sarawak, towards the implementation of petrol and diesel filling controls was very good. At the same time, he said there were several improvements that needed to be made to increase the effectiveness of delivering information to the public regarding the latest ban. "Among the suggestions are enlarging the display of instructions regarding petrol and diesel filling limits at petrol stations so that they are clearer and easier for users to understand, as well as using graphic communication materials so that the presentation of information is more attractive and effective," he said. Azman said 283 petrol stations in Sarawak would continue to be monitored to ensure compliance with the guidelines. In JOHOR , state KPDN Director Lilis Saslinda Pornomo said 180 enforcement officers were carrying out inspections and monitoring in the field, especially in hotspot areas and border crossings in the state. He said monitoring at all 639 petrol stations in the state would also continue to be enhanced through daily patrols, including making announcements and reminders to foreign vehicle owners regarding enforcement. "In addition, we also place static enforcement officers in strategic locations and carry out regular surprise inspections," he told Bernama after inspecting enforcement at a petrol station in Johor Bahru. Meanwhile in KELANTAN , the manager of a petrol station in Kampung Belukar, Tumpat here, Ku Muhammad Farid Aidil Ku Din said all staff at the station had been briefed on the enforcement. "We are not facing any problems implementing it. We very much welcome the steps taken by this government in ensuring that RON95 can be fully enjoyed by local people," he said when met by reporters today. Bernama's survey of several petrol stations also found that Kelantan KPDN enforcement officers have been actively conducting regular monitoring at all petrol stations since early this morning, especially at locations near the Malaysia-Thailand border. In KEDAH , state KPDN Director Muhammad Nizam Jamaludin in a statement said that 180 enforcement officers were assigned to carry out inspections and monitoring in the field, in addition to integrated cooperation with the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS), Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) and other enforcement agencies, through Ops Tiris 4.0. A survey at several petrol stations in Changlun, near the national border, found that no foreign vehicles were seen filling up with RON95 petrol. A petrol station operator, Mohamad Niekmat Ariffin, said all his employees had been informed of the enforcement order banning the sale of RON95 petrol to foreign vehicles as well as the restriction on foreign credit and debit cards at self-service terminals which began to be implemented today. "We also monitor and control oil sales to prevent misuse, for example filling barrels without a permit exceeding 20 litres," he said. In PERLIS , most petrol station operators are aware of and comply with the restrictions on sales using foreign credit and debit cards at self-service petrol pump terminals, and they even take the initiative to make announcements by posting notices at petrol pumps. Perlis KPDN director Rohaida Hassan, who also participated in today's inspection operation, said the majority of petrol stations understood the regulations enforced today and complied with the ban. He said his department had also increased controls and inspections at 40 petrol stations throughout Perlis every day during the day and night, with a focus on more than 10 petrol stations located in border areas. "For starters, we are more about advocacy to educate and provide information about the regulations for using foreign credit cards and debit cards for foreign vehicles," he said.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 1 -- The Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) is fully prepared to implement social protection for gig workers, including through system integration using Application Programming Interface (API) technology with platform providers. In a statement today, PERKESO said the integration aims to enable contribution deductions to be carried out automatically from each gig worker transaction without the need for manual intervention, thereby improving efficiency, transparency and compliance. In this regard, all gig platform providers are urged to ensure their systems are ready so that the integration process can be implemented smoothly and swiftly. “This step is in line with the implementation of the Gig Workers Act 2025 (Act 872), which mandates all platform providers to register their gig workers with PERKESO. “In addition, platform providers that have yet to register are still subject to the responsibility of registering and deducting contributions to ensure gig workers remain protected,” it said. Under the new mechanism, contributions at a rate of 1.25 per cent will be automatically deducted from each income transaction once a task is completed, ensuring more consistent and continuous social protection for gig workers. “This approach not only expands social security coverage but also ensures that gig workers receive appropriate protection without compromising their work flexibility,” the agency said. Regarding the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (LINDUNG Kendiri), PERKESO statistics show that the number of reported accidents under the scheme increased from 4,021 cases in 2023 to 4,839 cases in 2024, and further to 5,496 cases in 2025. Over the same period, the number of benefit recipients also rose from 6,294 in 2023 to 6,725 in the following year, before reaching 7,893 in 2025. “These statistics signal that it is time for social protection for this group to be given more serious and comprehensive attention, in line with the increasingly dynamic and flexible nature of today’s employment landscape. “Therefore, strengthening protection is not only important to safeguard gig workers when facing risks, but also to ensure the welfare of their dependants in the event of unforeseen circumstances. It added that the implementation of Act 872 places Malaysia in a strategic position as one of the pioneers in the region to introduce a comprehensive legal framework specifically for the gig sector.

KLANG, April 1 (Bernama) -- A car driver believed to have been under the influence of drugs has been charged in the Magistrate’s Court here today with murder over the death of a motorcyclist in a crash on Sunday. R. Saktygaanapathy, 28, was charged with causing the death of Amirul Hafiz Omar, 33, at Jalan Raya Barat, Klang, at 11.47 am on March 29. The charge, framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, carries the death penalty or imprisonment of up to 40 years and, if not sentenced to death, a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction. No plea was recorded from the accused after the charge was read out before Magistrate M. Khartiyayini, as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court. In another charge at the same court, Saktygaanapathy pleaded guilty to self-administration of drugs believed to be benzodiazepine (Benzo) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) at the Narcotics Office of the South Klang District Police Headquarters (IPD) at 3.30 pm on the same day. He was charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both, and may include a supervision order of up to three years upon conviction. Deputy Public Prosecutor Raja Zaizul Faridah Raja Zaharudin did not offer bail, citing the seriousness of the murder charge. The accused was unrepresented. The court then set June 3 for mention of all cases and the submission of pathology reports. Earlier, the accused arrived at the Klang Court complex at about 8.50 am in handcuffs, escorted by police officers. Meanwhile, the victim’s wife, Nor Nadia Abdul Majid, 32, was present in court to follow the proceedings. In the incident last Sunday, South Klang police Chief ACP Lim Jit Huey said the victim was killed after being struck by a car allegedly driven at high speed and in a dangerous manner in a crash on Jalan Raya Barat.

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 16 -- Police have arrested another individual to assist in investigations into the murder of a man at a hotel in Sunway Mentari, Petaling Jaya on July 8. Petaling Jaya District Police Chief, ACP Shamsudin Mamat said the man, in his 40s, was arrested last Monday and remanded for four days until tomorrow to assist in the investigation. He said the remand period of two men in their 20s and 30s who were previously detained expired today, and would be extended to assist with investigations. "The investigation papers regarding this case will be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor this week," he said in a statement today. Previously, the media reported that a man in his 30s was found unconscious in a hotel before being reported dead at 11.23pm.
