KUALA LUMPUR, March 24 (Bernama) -- The government is continuing its preparations to face a prolonged conflict situation in West Asia, which is expected to have economic implications not only for Malaysia but globally. The National Security Council (MKN) said that the government will adopt a comprehensive and coordinated approach to manage the situation, and the matter was among the key focuses discussed during today’s special MKN meeting held to address the impact of ongoing uncertainty in the region. The special meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, will be followed by a special National Economic Action Council (MTEN) meeting tomorrow to deliberate on further measures. “Malaysia welcomes recent developments where all parties involved have halted attacks for five days, and views this window as an opportunity for serious and sincere negotiations. “The meeting noted that these latest developments have led to a decline in international oil prices,” the council said in a statement today. In addition, MKN stressed that Malaysia will continue to play a proactive role in contributing towards resolving the conflict by maintaining close relations with international counterparts. “Today, the Prime Minister held telephone conversations with leaders from New Zealand, Japan, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates. “Malaysia has several key attributes to play this role. For instance, with the exception of Israel, Malaysia maintains good relations with all major parties involved. Its consistent stance, neutrality, and frank approach have earned it respect,” the council said. The meeting also emphasised national security issues, including intelligence agency activities in Malaysia, prevention of fuel smuggling, and monitoring the condition of Malaysian peacekeeping forces (MALBATT) currently deployed in Lebanon. The council added that the Malaysian government will continue taking proactive measures to ensure national security and safeguard the welfare of its people during this challenging period. Regional tensions have escalated since the United States and Israel launched joint strikes on Iran on Feb 28.

IPOH -- The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained two oil tankers suspected of conducting unauthorised ship-to-ship (STS) bunkering activities near Pulau Jarak, Lumut, yesterday. Its Perak director, Captain Mohamad Shukri Khotob, said the vessels were intercepted at 8 pm, some 11 nautical miles east of the island. “Checks revealed that both tankers were suspected of carrying out bunkering activities without a permit and anchoring in an area not authorised by the Director-General of the Malaysia Marine Department. “An estimated 750 metric tonnes of Marine Fuel Oil (MFO) is believed to have been transferred between the tankers,” he said in a statement today. He said both vessels were ordered to anchor 11.5 nautical miles east of Pulau Jarak for handover to investigation officers, with monitoring assisted by the Lumut Sea Surveillance System (SWASLA). Mohamad Shukri said the case is being investigated under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 for unauthorised oil transfer and anchoring in prohibited areas.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 24 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will continue to support Indonesia’s diplomatic efforts to ease the Iran-Israel conflict to ensure tensions are reduced and civilian lives are protected. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said such support for Jakarta’s initiative is expected to help open the door to meaningful negotiations towards a peaceful and lasting solution in West Asia. In a Facebook post, Anwar said the matter was among the issues discussed during his telephone conversation with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto yesterday. “We both called for peace, and I informed President Prabowo that Malaysia supports all efforts aimed at achieving peace and resolving the conflict,” he said. Apart from regional and international matters, Anwar said he and Prabowo also agreed to meet soon to further strengthen the already close bilateral relations between the two countries. “We agreed to arrange a meeting in the near future, including my proposal to visit Jakarta as part of efforts to enhance our close bilateral ties,” he said.

In a statement, the board clarified that a visit by Steven Sim in September 2025 focused solely on upgrading hospital facilities and did not involve any temple-related discussions. The board stressed that there are no plans to relocate the hospital, but instead a proposal to construct an additional building to accommodate increasing patient numbers, including those from nearby districts such as Kulim. The project, supported by the Penang state government with the allocation of eight acres of land, is currently undergoing approval by the Ministry of Health Malaysia. The board also warned that the viral social media claims contain elements of racial and religious incitement that could disrupt social harmony, and urged authorities to investigate the source and take appropriate legal action. KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 16 -- Police have arrested another individual to assist in investigations into the murder of a man at a hotel in Sunway Mentari, Petaling Jaya on July 8. Petaling Jaya District Police Chief, ACP Shamsudin Mamat said the man, in his 40s, was arrested last Monday and remanded for four days until tomorrow to assist in the investigation. He said the remand period of two men in their 20s and 30s who were previously detained expired today, and would be extended to assist with investigations. "The investigation papers regarding this case will be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor this week," he said in a statement today. Previously, the media reported that a man in his 30s was found unconscious in a hotel before being reported dead at 11.23pm.
