KUALA LUMPUR, JUNE 26 -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim continues to receive positive ratings when he recorded the highest support rate, at 52 percent, compared to other political leaders, according to the latest Merdeka Center survey released yesterday. The survey conducted between March 12 and April 9 this year also found that 42 percent of Malaysian voters still believe that the country is on the right track despite facing increasing international uncertainty and economic challenges. Merdeka Center, in a statement yesterday, announced that the percentage remained unchanged compared to the figures recorded in December 2025 and February 2026. "Across ethnic groups, 39 percent of Malay respondents said the country was heading in the right direction compared to 50 percent among Chinese respondents and 33 percent of Indian respondents. "By age group, respondents aged 21 to 30 recorded the highest positive sentiment at 57 percent, while those aged 51 to 60 were the least optimistic group at only 32 percent," the statement said. In terms of satisfaction levels with the Federal Government, 50 percent of respondents stated they were satisfied, while another 48 percent were dissatisfied. Based on ethnic groups, Muslim and non-Muslim Bumiputera respondents from Sabah and Sabah recorded the highest level of satisfaction with 68 percent, followed by Chinese respondents at 53 percent, while Indian and Malay respondents recorded satisfaction levels of 46 percent and 44 percent respectively. Young respondents aged 21 to 30 recorded the highest level of satisfaction with 64 percent expressing support for the Federal Government. According to the survey, support for institutional reform remains strong with strong support given to proposals to limit the Prime Minister's term to a maximum of two terms or 10 years, separate the roles of the Attorney General and Public Prosecutor, and introduce direct elections for the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur. "It is worth noting that support for this political reform shows little difference between Malay and non-Malay respondents, thus showing that the proposal has broad support across various races," the statement said. The survey involved 1,209 voters comprising 51 percent Malays, 27 percent Chinese, eight percent Indians, seven percent Muslim Bumiputeras and seven percent non-Muslim Bumiputeras (from Sabah and Sarawak), through telephone interviews using a stratified random sampling method to reflect the demographics of voters in Malaysia. -- BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 -- Starting this Sunday, Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) will offer promotional fares for the Southern Shuttle service covering the Kempas Baru-Pasir Gudang and Kulai-JB Sentral routes. KTMB Group chief executive officer Datuk Azlan Shah Al Bakri said the promotion is an effort to encourage more people to choose rail transport as a more comfortable, faster, and cost-effective daily transportation mode. JOHOR BAHRU, June 25 -- The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will open five operations rooms across Johor to enable members of the public to submit information and complaints related to corruption and abuse of power during the state election. MACC said that the operations rooms will operate 24 hours a day, starting from nomination day on June 27 until polling day on July 11. It said that the five operations rooms will be located at the MACC Johor office in Tampoi, as well as MACC branch offices in Batu Pahat, Kluang, Segamat, and Mersing. “Members of the public may also channel complaints regarding corruption and abuse of power through the operations room's official email address: aduan.prnjohor2026@sprm.gov.my,” MACC said in a statement today. It also assured that every piece of information received will be investigated professionally and transparently, in accordance with the provisions of applicable laws. JOHOR BAHRU, June 25 -- The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) has allocated RM216.44 million to Johor to boost housing development, public amenities, and community welfare. The minister, Nga Kor Ming, said the funds were allocated under the ministry’s development programme as part of the first rolling plan of the 13th Malaysia Plan. He said the funding covers several strategic initiatives, including affordable housing projects, the maintenance of stratified homes, public amenities, community safety, solid waste management, and urban and rural development. "This RM216.44 million allocation proves the MADANI Government's continuous commitment to ensuring the people of Johor enjoy access to quality housing, comfortable public amenities, and a more sustainable, prosperous living environment. "To give an example, this flat (Flat Taman Ungku Tun Aminah) is 41 years old and is the largest in Johor, with over 80 blocks. Today, through our community outreach programme, we are beginning renovation works on the first 10 blocks,” he said at the media conference for KPKT’s Sentuhan Kasih Programme 4.0, at Flat Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, Skudai, today. Nga said the majority of the funds would be used to advance the public housing agenda through various initiatives, including Rumah Malaysia, the People's Housing Project (PPR), the People's Residency Programme (PRR), and the MADANI Inclusive Housing Development (PIM). Additionally, the funds will be used to upgrade public infrastructure, including markets, MADANI stalls, drainage systems, public toilets, recreational parks, fire stations, and residential areas. To reinforce the sustainable development agenda, he said allocations were also channelled toward solid waste management projects, the safe closure of landfills, and the implementation of public landscaping projects. BUKIT MERTAJAM: The Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) will fully enforce the ban on hawking activities within 40 metres of school fences throughout Seberang Perai starting next year. MBSP Mayor Datuk Baderul Amin Abdul Hamid said the implementation was in line with the Guidelines for Hawking Outside School Fences issued by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) to ensure the safety of students, smooth traffic and food hygiene. "The measure was taken following feedback and complaints received from schools and parents regarding hawking activities outside school gates, particularly involving the sale of unhealthy food and drinks, food hygiene aspects and student safety issues. "Comprehensive enforcement will be implemented starting next year, but until the end of this year we will focus on education, advocacy and voluntary compliance before legal action is taken against hawkers who still fail to comply," he said at a press conference at Sekolah Kebangsaan Bandar Baru Perda, here, today. He said that among the initiatives implemented by MBSP included the installation of signs prohibiting hawking within 40 metres of the school fence, the distribution of information leaflets to hawkers, engagement sessions with the school and local community, as well as regular monitoring by enforcement officers and environmental health officers. Baderul Amin said MBSP also introduced a hawker tracking permit system or "tagging" to record, identify and manage hawking activities in permitted locations more systematically, especially after the implementation of the ban. He said that so far, a total of 554 hawkers have registered under the tagging system and of that total, 194 hawkers have completed the process. "The tagging system, which costs RM60 a month, aims to help hawkers operate more systematically in permitted areas while also facilitating monitoring by local authorities," he said. He said there were 241 schools throughout Seberang Perai and on average around 10 hawkers were doing business around each school, but the actual number was difficult to determine because most of them operated irregularly. KUALA LUMPUR, JUNE 25 -- ASEAN is examining new approaches to strengthen the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus (5PC) towards resolving the crisis in Myanmar, said Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. He said that although the situation in Myanmar had shown some improvement, the country had yet to achieve the progress agreed upon by ASEAN leaders through the 5PC, which remained the main framework in efforts to restore peace in the country. Mohamad said at the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, the Philippines on May 8, regional leaders agreed that ASEAN foreign ministers should hold informal engagements with Myanmar to assess current developments and identify next steps. IPOH: Police successfully busted a drug trafficking syndicate and seized ketamine and suspected Erimin 5 pills worth more than RM120,000 following a raid on a house in Pengkalan Tiara here, last Monday. Perak Police Chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said that in the operation at 8.45pm that night, two men and a local woman aged 17 to 43 were arrested. He said the raid was carried out by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (JSJN) of the Perak Police Contingent (IPK) Headquarters based on intelligence information regarding drug trafficking activities in the area. "The police seized one transparent plastic package and nine transparent plastic packets, each containing suspected ketamine with an estimated weight of 1,001 grams. "Also seized were 350 pieces of aluminium foil, each piece containing 10 pills suspected to be Erimin 5 with an estimated weight of 1,100 grams. The total value of the drugs seized is estimated to be RM120,050," he said in a statement last night. Mohd Alwi said urine tests found that one of the suspects tested positive for ketamine, while the other two tested negative for the drug. He said the syndicate was believed to have been active for almost two years and the seized drugs were suspected of being distributed in the state. He said the first suspect was remanded for four days starting yesterday and the third suspect was remanded for six days until June 28, while the remand application for another suspect was rejected by the Ipoh Court Magistrate. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Meanwhile, Mohd Alwi said, a total of 8,721 individuals were arrested for drug offences throughout Perak from January to last month.
