PUTRAJAYA, July 10 — The Ministry of Transport (MOT) will take enforcement action against campaign workers found riding motorcycles without helmets during the Johor state election campaign, regardless of their political affiliation. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the ministry viewed seriously a viral video showing a group of Pakatan Harapan (PH) campaign workers, including members from the Democratic Action Party (DAP), riding motorcycles without wearing helmets during campaign activities. Loke stressed that road safety laws apply equally to everyone and should not be compromised for political purposes. He said he had maintained the same position for years, recalling that during the Slim by-election campaign nearly six years ago, he had also criticised Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders involved in similar incidents. "There is nothing wrong with riding motorcycles during election campaigns, but every rider must wear a helmet and set a good example for the public," he said. Loke added that the principle applies equally to all political parties, including Pakatan Harapan candidates and campaign workers. He said he had instructed the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to issue summonses to anyone found violating helmet regulations based on evidence from the viral video, irrespective of their political background. The enforcement, he said, would also include those involved in the PH campaign convoy in Johor. Loke emphasised that the law must be enforced fairly and consistently against all Malaysians and said he would not compromise on road safety principles, even if they involved members of his own political coalition. BANTING, July 10 — A teenage girl accused of stabbing a female student at a secondary school in Banting arrived at the Telok Datok Magistrate’s Court today to face charges. The teenager arrived at the court compound at 8.32am under a heavy police escort. She had earlier been remanded for four days from July 7 as police investigated the case under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder. Media personnel who arrived at the court were not allowed to enter the court compound as the case involves a juvenile accused. The incident, which occurred at a secondary school in Kuala Langat on Monday, involved a Form Three female student who was injured and later received treatment at Banting Hospital. Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said initial investigations, including statements recorded from several individuals and 10 students whose names appeared in a note circulated on social media, found that the incident was not related to bullying. However, police believe that resentment towards a schoolmate may have been the motive behind the alleged stabbing. The Selangor Education Department previously confirmed that the suspect had been arrested by police, while the injured student was given medical attention following the incident. -- MINUTESMY

SHAH ALAM, July 9 – Selangor police have dismantled four drug trafficking syndicates following the seizure of 116.2 kilograms of cannabis buds worth an estimated RM13.34 million in four separate raids at Terminal 1 of Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Kota Warisan, Sepang. Selangor Police Chief CP Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the operations were carried out by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of the KLIA District Police Headquarters with the assistance of Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) auxiliary police at KLIA between the end of June and early July. A total of five suspects, aged between 25 and 40, were arrested. They comprised two foreign men, two local women and one local man. Speaking at a press conference at the Selangor Police Contingent Headquarters on Thursday, Shazeli said the first raid was conducted on June 29 after police detected two suspicious suitcases through an airport scanning machine. "The owner of the luggage, a foreign national from a Southeast Asian country, was arrested at the flight departure waiting area. Initial inspection uncovered 60 plastic packages containing compressed cannabis buds weighing approximately 33.6 kilograms, with an estimated street value of RM2.7 million," he said. In the second raid at the same location, police detected another suspicious suitcase and discovered 39 plastic packages containing compressed cannabis buds weighing about 21.1 kilograms, valued at RM1.7 million. Police subsequently arrested a local woman who owned the luggage. Preliminary urine screening found that she had tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine. Shazeli said investigations into the remaining two raids are ongoing as police continue efforts to identify other individuals linked to the syndicates and to curb drug trafficking activities through the country's main international gateway. -- MINUTESMY

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 9 -- Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Liew Chin Tong has defended the government's handling of the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, saying Malaysia would have faced significantly greater financial and reputational losses had there been no change of government in 2018. Speaking in Parliament in response to a supplementary question from Chong Chieng Jen, Liew said the question of whether the country's losses from the 1MDB scandal would have increased without the 2018 administration change was both relevant and important. According to Liew, the total cost of the 1MDB scandal currently stands at RM51.4 billion. He argued that if the previous administration under former prime minister Najib Razak had remained in power after 2018, no meaningful action would have been taken to address the scandal, leaving the government to bear the full financial burden. He noted that since 2018, intensive efforts by the Ministry of Finance and various agencies have resulted in the successful recovery of assets worth RM31.3 billion. However, he acknowledged that approximately RM20.1 billion is still believed to be unrecoverable, representing a substantial loss to the country. Liew said the scandal also imposed significant indirect costs on Malaysia, including legal expenses, financial advisory fees and years of effort spent tracing and recovering assets that should never have been lost. He added that public funds used to resolve issues arising from the scandal could otherwise have been channelled towards programmes benefiting Malaysians. As an example, Liew said the government was forced to allocate RM13 billion from the 2023 development budget to repay a US$3 billion 1MDB bond guaranteed by the previous administration. He said the payment accounted for 13.1 per cent of the country's total development expenditure that year. Beyond the financial impact, Liew stressed that the scandal had also damaged Malaysia's international reputation. He said that for nearly a decade, Malaysia had attracted global attention because of the 1MDB controversy, causing embarrassment to Malaysians overseas and those engaging with foreign investors. Liew said Malaysia's international standing began to improve after the MADANI Government led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim took office, adding that the country has since regained greater international respect and credibility.. -- MINUTESMY
